  • Has anyone got a 'Q' car? 6 Jan 2013 (Forum)
In far off days this would mean a supercharged Minor, or Cortina Savage( bigger engine in normal saloon). I'd really like to buy a non-bling quick, grunty car, up to about 30k but with reasonable fuel consumption(30+), must have a nice ride and a bit of room. Estate would be fine, but not too big.Petrol or Diesel. The problem is that if you spec a decent engine with a new car you automatically get all the bling.
  • Ford Focus Estate - Ford Focus Mk1 - Petrol or Diesel? 27 Oct 2012 (Forum)
I am looking to buy a 200-2001 Ford Focus Estate to replace a recently dead Renault 19 diesel. I like the fuel economy of the Focus diesels (hj's real mpg suggests 36mpg petrol vs 48mpg diesel) but I'm worried about the horror stories of older diesels failing expensively (the DMF problem). My choice for the Mk1's (and Mk 1.5's) seem to either of 2 diesel engines, the 1.8TDDi and the 1.8 TDCi, or the 1.6 petrol engine.
  • Best and safest family diesel for £4000 5 Oct 2012 (Forum)
Hi all I have been driving 4x4's over the last few winters but having to cut the fuel bill down so going back to a normal car :-( I have about £4000 to spend and want a safe, relatively economical family car - preferably a diesel. Safe being the main concern! Going back to 2wd in the ice makes me nervous so no BMW suggestions please due to the RWD lol My son is 5ft 10 so must be something quite roomy in the back - I hate small cars anyway :-D I have looked for an AWD Volvo or Audi but too pricey to get a decent one with reasonable miles and subarus are nearly all gas guzzling petrols What should I spend my hard earned cash on?
  • 1.8 8v running a weber carb - 1988 vw scirocco running problem 23 Sep 2012 (Forum)
Have had this problem before in june and managed to sort it by fitting the following...new coil, ign module, dist cap, rotor arm, vac pipes, and fuel pump. Last week the problem returned and i urgently need to get the car back on the road. It starts first turn of the key every timeticks over and warms up fine, while stationary will rev fine, but as soon as you put it in gear and lift the clutch it stutters and loses power, though it doesnt completely cut out.

  • Vauxhall Corsa - Simple Question, Quick Answer 3 Aug 2012 (Forum)
Hello guys, I went ahead and bought a brand new Vauxhall Corsa Limited Edition 1.2i 16v a couple days ago from Vauxhall. I got the car home and I am currently reading the instruction manual. However, the fuel type for the new car says Petrol/LPG. I know that LPG stands for Liquified Petroleum Gas but I am not sure what this is? When I go to the garage to fill up, am I putting in the usual Unleaded Petrol?
  • KIA Ceed Estate - 3 month warranty on used car through a dealer 5 Jul 2012 (Forum)
I thought it might have a few problems, clutch engages very quickly, white smoke from exhaust on cold start, slightly crunchy brakes, so I took it into my local KIA dealer to get them checked out. They tell me that it needs a new clutch, new front and rear brake pads and new fuel filter, about £1000 to repair all. I've called the dealer I bought it from trying to state my statutory rights but he says that these are wearable items and as they worked when I drove away then he can't help me!
  • Mazda MX5 Mark 2 1.8 - Engine Fault Codes for Mazda MX5 Mk2 1.8 please 14 Apr 2012 (Forum)

  • BMW 3 Series Coupe - Used car for 3000-3500 for doing 450mi+ a week in 31 Mar 2012 (Forum)
Also if there are any "elephants in the room" for the money, let me know...   Priorities are reliability, camchain, non-idiotic fuel costs and preferably capable in corners when I have time to "enjoy driving" if that is possible in this country any more:(   All the best and thanks in advance,   Fred.
  • Any vehicle - crawling approach to Traffic lights on Red 4 Mar 2012 (Forum)
The reason for this moan is I have a 2 year old car that is fitted with "stop start" technology as are many new cars, the benefit is in the title, if you stop the car the engine turns off therefore saving fuel, however, this is not possible if you are crawling to the lights as the car doesn't actually get a chance to stop, I actually tried stopping once and watched the crawling gap in front of me get larger and larger resulting in the cars behind beeping their horns in anger, so please, close the gap as quickly as possible  to allow other motorists the opportunity to save the Planet.
  • Budgeting for repairs 29 Nov 2011 (Forum)
Hi guys, Following on from my recent "having a baby, need a bigger car" thread, i'm just doing the sums on second hand versus leasing a new car. The easy bits are working out the cost of the car (including financing), fuel costs, tax and MOT costs.... The hard bit is working out how much to budget for repairs / maintenance for an older car that is out of warranty versus a new car. So can anyone give me an rough idea of what I should be looking to budget per year for repairs / maintenance to keep it running and get it through its MOT.
  • AA Mechanical Breakdown Insurance 14 Nov 2011 (Forum)
Looking at the website the cover seems pretty comprehensive, a turbocharger is only covered via an additional premium though it indicates that the fuel system would be covered which, as we know, can be an fairly expensive repair on a TDCi. However the website says: "This Insurance offers 'Parts and Labour' cover for specifically listed Components under the following categories.
  • Mazda 6 - Nightmare just ended 4 Nov 2011 (Forum)
Hi all, We purchased  a Mazda 6 TD2 in Apr 2009 (FSH, 56K, 2003 plate) for £5250. After 4 months the fuel pump went, one week after we got it back the turbo blew (spectacularly). We asked for our money back - didn't even get a response. We went through our credit card company and eventually the FSO - achieved nothing.

  • Volvo V70 - rear end shunt 11 Sep 2011 (Forum)
My Volvo V70 diesel was hit from behind in a traffic queue and although the bodywork is now fine there are several issues on which I would like opinions. The fuel flap was jammed solid and on release has just flapped around...aptly named. Rear seat mechanism stuck and one reat seatbelt won't move and the other won't tension. Oddly the idle speed is now fast too.

  • Citroen Xsara 2.0 HDi - 2000 Citroen Xsara 2.0 HDi won't start please help 20 Jul 2011 (Forum)
Maybe imobiliser problem although light not on on dash and keyfob works fine. Also mentioned it could be the cam sensor. Computer records 300 bar at fuel rail and rpm ok. Could this be heater plugs or would it have started with easystart if this was the case? It's driving me mad any help appreciated.
  • Congestion 7 Jun 2011 (Forum)
Intesresting read this morning: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/news/8552721/Road-congestion-falls-as-motorists-leave-cars-at-home-amid-soaring-fuel-prices.html I live 36 miles from my job.  Most of the drive is on the M6 with some country lanes as well, so on a good day it takes me 38-40 minutes.  On a bad day it's closer to 50 mins and sometimes it's a full hour.
  • 2.0 HDI 110 - Peugeot 307 SW Antipollution fault 9 May 2011 (Forum)
Looking through the car's paperwork I see in 2008 it had the same problem. The additive pump, egr solenoid and fuel cap sensor was replaced at a Peugeot dealer and according to the receipt this cleared the fault.  Maybe the same needs doing? The car drives normal, loads of power, and the RPM's are not limited.
