• Avensis 2002 2.0 vvti-auto - Which Automatic transmission Fluid 12 Apr 2011 (Forum)
  There arre some aftermarket fluids which claim to meet one of those specs, and some which claim to meet all of them (is that possible ??) Car has done 125,000 miles and fluid is very brown and dirty looking on the dipstick.

  Couldn't find this anywhere so forgive me if I am repeating anything. I am buying  a new car and trading in my old one under the Vauxhall swappage scheme. The dealer (Pentagon) have gone over everything and tell me not to worry about the problem and not to send off the log book to rectify my 'mistake' which I will explain.

  My November, 2007 (51) X3 SE Diesel Automatic, owned since 6 months old has done 36.000 miles and has been serviced as per manufacturers instructions.   The following warning lights came on at the same time today: 4x4, ABS, Brake system, Tyre pressure, Air bag; in addition, the speedometer and cruise control do not work and the mileage remaining from the current fuel tank contents moves erratically.

  Hi all. I have a 2002 skoda octavia 1.9tdi. 3 days ago whilst stuck on the ice i reved the car to get out of the ice and it shuttered to a stall. when i started it back up the engine was jerky and alot of white smoke is coming out the exhaust. took it to a mates garage and we thought it was EGR so we replaced it. no difference. we then thought it was the injectors so we swapped them with an old set he had lying about. we then thought it was maybe the cat blocked so we took the whole exhaust off. still no difference.

  I like the FIAT 500 but am put off by the current range of engines: 1.2 too slow and long in the tooth (FIRE OHC engine is 26 years old), 1.3 Diesel (too heavy and again not that powerful) and 1.4 petrol a bit expensive, and diappointed me on a test drive: A powerful little twin in this car sounds great though and I'd imagine it would be full of character like a 2CV or Honda Z600 but with a decent turn of speed.

  Anyway I need to try and acquire Autotrader issues from between September and December 2004 as I believe one of these issues should contain the car that he sold on the sly... Apologies for the rant but if anyone would be able to offer advice on where I could find back issues of autotrader, that would be really helpful and appreciated! Cheers
• Volkwagon Beetle 2.0 petrol - Intermittent lack of power 27 Jul 2010 (Forum)
  It does not do it every time, just internmittently. She always keeps the tank about half full of fuel. She has left the car with me while she is away for a fortnight to sort out the problem. My only experience of this was with an old BMW that didithe same thing and in the end that required a new disributor cap and rotor arm.
• Nissan X-Trail - X-Trail Requires new engine - just out of warranty 11 Jun 2010 (Forum)
  Nissan X-Trail, 2007 dCi model, just out of warranty due to mileage (73000 miles), but still under 3 years old. Originally supplied by Nissan Ireland. (It's a car supermarket vehicle). Requires new engine due to an injector failure which has resulted in piston, valve and cylinder bore damage. Nissan GB aren't interested, because they didn't supply the vehicle.

  Then came the pre Xmas snow & ice and I broadened my search for a convertible. Returning from holiday I followed up a 6 year old 330Ci which had been marooned at the bottom of an ice covered drive for several weeks. A fair price was offered, and duly accepted. Its a fair bit more refined than my previous Elise, and I shall be sad to say good bye to my current car which was bought to tide me over for 3 months some 27 months ago!

  It's quite frustrating to spend an extra 5 minutes or so scraping the inside of the windscreen each time I want to use my car during a particularly cold spell.
• Are there any modern diesels without a DMF? 23 Sep 2009 (Forum)
  Thinking about changing the car (again) and I've got a preference for diesel (based on driving characteristics and economy) but seriously concerned about DMF problems that seem common place. Does anyone know of any modern, mainstream diesels (Ford, Vauxhall etc) that don't have a DMF fitted?

  I'm starting to think about changing my 10 year old Saab 9-5 for a similar size estate. Cars up for consideration, with a 5-6k budget, are Saab 9-5 (I've had quite a few Saabs, feel a fair degree of loyalty to the marque, and quite fancy an Aero estate), Toyota Avensis, Volvo V70, Mazda 6 and Audi (probably too expensive) Some models seem to have a lot of diesels for sale, Mazda particularly.

  Hi, my comm2000 unit was playing up....i.e. lights coming on whenever they wanted, indicators working, then not, etc etc. so changed my unit for a secondhand one. Bear in mind that my car is the Dturbo with absolutely every damn extra you can think off. Anyway after changing comm2000 i got ESP fault. Changed back to my old unit and ESP fault had gone, so sent comm2000 unit back and asked for another one.
• Volkswagen - Ex Rental VW PD TDis 24 Mar 2009 (Forum)
  The rental company was a bit shocked at the price when I showed them the receipt (I brought the proper 507.00 stuff) . Apparently they shove any old SAE multigrade in their cars as "the proper stuff is far too expensive". Remind me never to buy an ex rental VW TDI if they can't be bothered to service them correctly! I know they are on long life so they probably never need to service them, but all TDI's use more than a sump full of oil in their first year.
• Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 02 2.0 Chirping noise from heater fan 3 Mar 2009 (Forum)
  My 2.0 Hdi has developed a chirping noise from the heater fan motor when running at low speed - it's a bit like I've got a cricket under the dash - I imagine it's the bearing running dry. I had the same thing on a 205 some years back and just lived with it! This car is generally quieter than the old 205 and this type of noise is more noticeable. The noise is more prevalent when cornering - shaft being forced hard to one side due to centrifugal forces I guess. Has any one else experienced this and found a simple cure - say a spray of WD40 in the right place?

  As long as it will do 80mph on the flat thats OK. Must have excellent fuel economy. Not bothered about make as, like cars, I guess they are all pretty reliable these days. Possibly now even more likely to kill myself but hey, que sera......!! I would be very grateful for any suggestions. Anything up to 5yrs old considered.

  The old Vectra has been given intermittent emissions warning via the lamp on the dash. It will come on and go off after a few ignition cycles. The garage I use put the car on diagnostics and told me that it was the engine temperature sensor that had caused the fault light, but as it was the first time it had illuminated and had gone off I was told to keep an eye on it.
• Honda Accord Tourer (2003 - 2008) - 04 2.2 ctdi Tailgate strut failure 6 Nov 2008 (Forum)
  Has anybody suffered the failure of the tailgate struts and if so have they been replaced under warranty? My car is now just over 4 years old (75000 miles) and it would seem that the bill to replace the two tailgate struts is approximately £450. The classic symptom for this failure is that when you open the tailgate electrically it will not hold in place and closes again.

  Hello, I have a 9 month old Citroen C4 Grand... sadly, now with a cigarette burn on the passenger seat (not from me I hasten to add - GRRRR). The car is a contract hire from Citroen Contract Motoring so I am liable for the damage.
• Vauxhall Astra G Diesel (1998 - 2004) - 99 1.7 problem with diesel pump ? 12 Sep 2008 (Forum)
  hello all, i have just bought an astra 1.7 td gm engine that was advertised as needing a diesel pump, i bought it from someone who worked at a vauxhall main dealer and the chap said he had it checked and it was definitely the pump but he couldnt afford to do it. i bought a second hand pump and the breakers assured me that it was off a running car , i have fitted it and got it started but it runs terrible ! could the timing be out ? it does say in the manual that the ecu controls the timing but when taking the old pump off and putting the new one on i did notce that the timing sprocket is adjustable would this adjust the timing ???
