Vauxhall Carlton stalling 16 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Lately it has started to stall after being fully warmed-up then parked for a while. The car restarts (sometimes needing several attempts) but when drive or reverse are engaged the revs dip and it stalls, it is OK if slight throttle is kept on for a while or I am able to engage drive with some throttle and "bounce" away. This never happens when cold or if the engine is switched off for just a few minutes, only when left for 20 mins- 1 hour or so. -
Ford Suspension Problems 9 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I have a strange "clonking" sound coming from what sounds like inside the dashboard ahead of the driver which only occurs whilst driving. It's not continous, only seems to occur whilst steering or driving over bumpy road. I paid for an RAC Inspection which confirmed there was a problem and pointed the finger at the the front anti-roll bar bushes. -
Mk3 Golf 2.0 GTI Problem (Electrics?) 12 May 2005 (Forum)
In fact the 2nd time this occurred I topped up the oil thinking that was the issue then preceded to drive from Scotland to London with no further issue only for the same problem to reoccur the day after 10mins or so after driving from cold. Not knowing a great deal about cars, initially I thought it was oil related as the oil light came on when the car engine died but this may just be a red herring. -

Mondeo TD squeal/PAS 19 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Noticed a couple of times recently that ther's a high pitched squeal when the steering is in full lock. After driving 45 miles home today came round a roundabout and lost the PAS (which is makes things EXTREMELY difficult in this car!) and got squeal at the same time. Had to drive another 4 or 5 miles after the car sat parked for 20 mins, and not only did it do the same all the way home, the amount of turn needed to get it squealing seemed to become less and less. -
Buying a small car 16 Mar 2005 (Forum)
I've driven both (it's for my mum, and my sisters who are 18 and 16, so insurance cost is to be considered) and to be honest, I preferred the drive of the Corolla. It had a lot more torque throughout the range and was easier and more pleasant to drive than the higher capacity Civic. Plus the car supermarket salesman selling the Civic was a prat, whereas the Toyota salesman was a nice guy and knew what he was talking about. -
Reliability Surveys - Expectations 6 Nov 2004 (Forum)
How much of it is that genuinely the prestiege cars don't live up to their badge, how much that a Daewoo owner is less liable to complain about a creaking dash, and how much due to Japanese cars being so dull to drive and be in that their owners avoid driving them and fill in reliability surveys instead? Regards Chris -
Bright ideas please 3.5T van 3 Nov 2004 (Forum)
P junior rides for a KIDS motorcycle display team and we cart all the gear (Jump ramps, bikes, spares) around in a 7.5t IVECO, trouble is this is rapidly approaching the end of its useful life and becoming v expensive to run Repairs/Insurance/Diesel etc etc, plus its not very popular on the driving rota ! Therefore we have thought about downsizing to a 3.5t van which if we make the Mums and Dads tow the larger bikes should be plenty large enough and hopefully cheaper to run, easier to find and a bit more popular to drive - Mums too. -
Renault Scenic 29 Oct 2004 (Forum)
I have a brand new Scenic 1600 I have noticed straightaway a flat spot whereby as soon as you engage first gear and ease off the clutch there is a momentary spot where nothing happens hence inducing, however carefully one tries, a significant and thoroughly irritating jerk in the movement I took the car back to my dealer who acknowledged the problem, put it onto the computer and diagnosed nothing. I then insisted on driving another one which did exactly the same thing I have been driving for 35 years, I have 2 other modern cars (a Honda Civic and a Mazda MX5 ) neither of which have any such problem The garage will take no further interest saying that that's the way it is Where can I go from here? -
X-type swap 21 Sep 2004 (Forum)
I do about 20k business miles each year and coupled with a 3k trip around France a month ago, has convinced me that I need something a tad more economical. My previous prejudices against diesels have recently disappeared after driving various cars which were OK. I have narrowed down my search to Audi A4 2.5 TDI quattro and BMW 330d (both in tourer form). Given that the Jag is an auto, leather, cruise etc, it's got to have all the toys, and having driven both on extensive test drives recently I am 50:50. one half of me is swayed towards the Audi due to its 4x4 for the odd occaison when it may prove useful, but the other half likes the improved performance of the BMW. -
North or South East Spain 1 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Article in the Saturday Telegraph travel section about a ferry price war and they mentioned SpeedFerries as the best price. Great advice and booked off the internet for a standard return for £50.00 We normally drive down to Lagos in Portugal and meet up with daughter and family who fly down. Being retired when time doesn?t matter we enjoy a leisurely drive down, stop for a week or more and head back home. This year however they will not be there and the wife and I are thinking of perhaps choosing a destination not so far to travel as Lagos. -
Shocking Reading 22 Jul 2004 (Forum)
The long and short of it is, someone posted on how his mate had been sent to prison for 2 years after driving whilst banned and hitting, thus killing someone in a car not even registered to him. The poster was asking if there was any chance of his mate "getting off" and more shocking, information about driving again and how he could get around the 5 year ban. -
hyundai accent acceleration 7 Apr 2004 (Forum)
hyundai accent y plate, 2001 1.3 i model with 70,000 (mainly motorway miles). Brought car recently, one thing which is strange to the other cars i drive regulary, when i accelerate and press down on the pedel, its hard to describe but the pedal sounds 'rusty' or sort of makes a weird noise. dont get me wrong it accelerates, but its not as easy at the getz or rover 400 i drive. the pedel seems to make a weird noise and its a little heavier to press down and seems as if its grinding slightly. -
Aged parent - should I shop her? 4 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Like others I mutter that they shouldn't be on the road when encountering some old dear or a man in a hat pottering along at 25mph. Now I notice that my mother, aged 81, is hardly able to drive competently. She is probably not actually dangerous, yet, just a slow-moving traffic hazzard. Apart from not being able to reverse, her most serious failing is an inability to change down from 3rd to 2nd, I think because of the wrist movement. -
Question to Passat owners about... 2 Nov 2003 (Forum)
I wonder if the mpg I am getting is normal or could there be a fault somewhere? The car's idle is the same as before, around 800rpm. A friend drives a 3.0 Omega and gets about 20mpg around town, so I'm not a whole lot better off than him. S. -
The gal done good ! 30 Sep 2003 (Forum)
It was a long time ago that I learned to drive but I don\'t think I picked up this aspect as quickly as her so all in all I thinks she\'s done very, very well so far. It\'s funny isn\'t it, how some people have a knack for certain things and I have to say she\'s very comfortable judging distances, gaps etc. so I\'m quite confident she\'ll do well and be a good safe driver. -
Inside lane Truck-tyre Groove 23 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Doing a long (80 mile each way) drive every day, I tried a new route. On the M3, the Pug 406 in the inside land started to oscillate in the grooves left by truck tyres. I could avoid by driving out of them (to the right, but VERY close to the middle lane). -
Commercial vehicles for Private use only 21 Sep 2003 (Forum)
How many other back roomers run a 'Commercial' vehicle for private use? As many of you know I drive a SWB Renault Trafic van 2.4T gross weight as a private vehicle for property renovation, in the same way that some people may get an old banger for the same purpose. I have problems at tips etc as they immediately assume I'm fly tipping, whereas I took more rubbish in the car and trailer and was never challenged. -
Different viewpoint on mobile phones 21 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Up till now I have been a firm believer in the fact that using a phone whilst driving was no worse than trying to light a fag, change a tape, argue with the wife, have screaming weans etc. They are all distractions but only the mobile phone has had research into it and, subsequently action taken on it. -
Car Insurance 14 Sep 2003 (Forum)
A friend of mine (living abroad) pays an annual renewal premium (96 pounds) on a fully comp insurance policy for a C reg Ford Escort. He claims that this enables him to drive any vehicle when back in the UK and be fully insured to drive it. Fair enough you say, but the thing is, his brother no longer owns the car, in fact, they don't even know if the car still exists. I thought that this wasn't possible; either (a) the car is scrapped or (b)it is owned (and insured) by someone else.
