Mercedes Benz E-Class W124 (1985 - 2000) - 96 Cabriolet, 5 speed auto fuel consumption 24 Sep 2007 (Forum)
The car is running very well hot and cold but the fuel consumption is always in the low 20s - it is about 5mpg worse than my previous model. Any ideas what to check - all the usual has been done - tyres, brakes, engine has just been serviced. s -
Peugeot 406 (1999 - 2004) - 2003 HDi Handbrake 20 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Simply run (preferably down a steepish hill or two to avoid fuel wastage) with the handbrake firmly on,to bed in the brake linings properly, and the handbrake will subsequently work much better. It might then be worth re-adjusting using a screwdriver through the hole on the drum, to maximise the benefit. s -
Why are they allowed to do it?? 24 Jul 2007 (Forum)
i could understand these racks covering the rear windscreen, but surely not be allowed to cover the rear lights and bumper?? And if they cover the lights etc, isnt it bad that most of them had kids in the back?? brake lights covered..rear shunts??? -
How do you drive diesels? 5 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Hi, I'm swapping a 2004 Focus 1.8 Zetec for my first diesel later this week (2004 320d) and going through a few threads on this forum I see some hints that driving diesels might be different from petrol-engined cars - no engine braking etc. So how does it differ? What rpm should I be changing gear etc? I know about the 'surge' from the test drive (gave me a nice grin!) but what are the practical differences in the way you have to drive? -
106 front wheel nuts shredded 23 Apr 2007 (Forum)
My sister has a 106 1.1 y reg and i recently took the front road wheels off to check the brakes and had difficulty in taking the wheel nuts out. When they finally came i wasnt pleased to see metal fillings comming out with the nuts. The nuts have completely lost their thread and im sure the hub threads are shot too. -
Your Biggest Repair/service Bill?? 6 Dec 2006 (Forum)
My mate has a Honda Civic on an X-Plate, done around 55,000 miles. On his last service the garage found a ton of problems, brake discs and pads need replacing, new radiator, new shocks, exhaust had a smallish hole and needed replacing etc etc. anyway by the time he had everything done and paid for the full service he got a bill of just over £1300!!! -
Laying up car for 6 months 20 Sep 2006 (Forum)
WIll hook the battery up to a trickle charger and leave the handbrake off so hopefully no battery and brake issues when it is to be used again. Should I change the oil (was done recently) and maybe run it once a week for 10 minutes to keep the engine going or is this doing more harm than good? -
Caravans - Why so expensive? 25 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Bearing in mind the technology one can buy for that money, or a lot less, plasma TVs, digital cameras, new cars with a/c and so on why are caravans so pricey? I haven't looked round one lately but they seem to be a two wheel welded chassis with brakes, suspension, and lights and a load of Ikea, MFI, Portacabin tat screwed on top. I am asking partly because my daughter bought a 7 berth static home the other day and the price rather flabbered my ghast, if you know what I mean! -
Mk3 golf GTI 96 - ABS light 21 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Does anyone why this light would stay on all of the time. Since I have had the car, which is not long, the red warning light which indicates that the hand brake is applied is also on all of the time, although I have had new pads and dics fitted. Does anyone know if these are conected?? Many Thanks Stef -
VW Touran sticky handbrake 12 Jun 2006 (Forum)
I have a 1.6 petrol Touran, I noticed the backwheels were very hot one day and it appears there's a problem somewhere in the handbrake system. A local garage changed the brake pads but didn't feel there was a problem with the cable - he just made a minor tension adjustment I think. But the problem remains - although admittedly not as bad as it was. Now the wheel and sometimes wheels get quite warm, not hot. -
Creaking Nissan Micra 7 Feb 2006 (Forum)
I've now noticed louded creaking noises at slow speaks in car parks - especially when turning sharply and braking - such as when swinging into the parking space. Does anyone have an idea what it might be? The car is just approaching 25000 miles, but has been creaking for quite some time now. Any thoughts appreciated! -

Hi guys, Im going to have a bash at my rear brakes next with my friend who's done it before and is going to show me how to do them. He's got all the tools for the job but has suggested that sometime in the future I purchase my own big tool box with all the bits to go with it.... anyone got any suggestions on complete tool sets, what tool sets do you guys own? -
Renault Grand Espace 3.5 Petrol 13 Jan 2006 (Forum)

Re-Machining 'fragile' components 6 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I've seen a lot of posts on here about useless components ranging from brake pedal clips to timing belt/crankshaft pulleys (The rubber damped ones) Thinking about it, it wouldn't be too hard to remake them out of metal I imagine. I'd have to ask the experts but would it have an impact mechanically? -
Rusty discs 26 Nov 2005 (Forum)
The car like others is absolutely covered in salt and the like, and despite washing it all, and trying to keep the car clean the discs seem to be suffering - I notice when reversing that they now feel gritty when brakes are gently applied. Is there anything I can do? Would pressure washing get rid of minute elements of salt that would otherwise not shift and continue to corrode, or does adding water to the equation make the rusting proces speed-up? -
audi 80 ABK (B4) Clutch problem? 11 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Can anyone advise me if the slave rod attaches to the release arm or just presses against it. The system has been bled when the brakes were done. Many thanks. Martin -
Vectra help required please 11 Jun 2005 (Forum)
My Vectra has just failed it's MOT today , on two brakes pipes . No big deal , but there the one's running down the center of the estate disapearing behind one corner of the diesel fuel tank .So, I have visions of taking the tank off to get to these pipes. -
What happened here then ? 28 Mar 2005 (Forum)
As a rather unhappy looking lady goes to retrieve the wheel, I notice she is walking away from a three-wheeled hyundoo getiz or similar small thing, sat at a very uncomfortable angle. When she picked the wheel up, I could see that the brake drum was still attached to the wheel, and I could see the clean, bright, inside end of four wheelnuts poking through (or the bright spots where four wheel nuts/studs had all suddenly sheared simoultaneously. -
New Car :( 24 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Well...Last week I bought a lovely little Fiesta 1.25 Ghia, W reg with 29k on the clock. It's very tidy and I love it already. But it's got to go - due to the fact that when I brake, my knee touches the steering wheel, and it's generally not very comfy. A shame as my '96 LX wasn't brilliant, but better. I thought the Ghia would be perfect. So, it's got to go. :( What else can I get? -
Nissan QX - High emission and stalling 16 Feb 2005 (Forum)
As some BRer might recall, the emission is still high and the car cut out twice last week, both on me and on my girlfriened while exiting an motorway when we lifted off the throttle. It was not very nice to have no power-assistance to the brakes and steering when exiting motorway. Nissan say they will charge £84 + VAT so I'll wait and see how it goes. Does that sounds right? Any other ideas before I let Nissan loose on my car? Sorry for such a late post.
