  • What did you learn to drive in? 10 Sep 2008 (Forum)
The first ever car I drove was an (1970's) Escourt Estate. Upon learning the core basics and spending many ours driving around a disused airbase near Beverley East Yorkshire - I was then put in to a Bedford 7.5t and let loose on the roads! I took my dual car & HGV 3 test in this vehicle. I then progressed from there to HGV 2 evetually on to HGV 1 vehicles taking a dual HGV 1 + 2 test.
  • The right to drive more slowly? 5 Jul 2008 (Forum)
I personally leave room for people to overtake, but if I wish to potter along at 50 mph on an A-road, I surely will and if I get stuck behind a lorry doing 40 mph, unless Im in a huge hurry, I believe im well within my rights not to bother overtaking. What is wrong with driving at a reasonable, but not fast pace? Is it not so much the pace of the slower car, but the driver behind thinking that they are infact far more important and people should yield to their will?
  • A12 - Slow driver in black Peugeot 19 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Why does he always drive so slowly, and why the hazard lights all the time? I didn't think much of it the first time I overtook him, but it is odd that he drives like that all the time.
  • Driving Test Requirements 3 Mar 2008 (Forum)
(There are no motorways north of Stirling - and I don't thiink there are many on places like the Isle of Wight or the Scily Isles either.) I certainly can't see someone from Lerwick taking a whole day to sail to Aberdeen, then drive to Edinburgh or Glasgow for a test, then go back home again - a round trip of 800 miles, two drivers, probably 2 nights accommodation...... and they'll probably never see a motorway again. I could probably say the same for drivers in west Wales.
  • Driving In Snow 4 Feb 2008 (Forum)
As you have seen in the news lately about drivers stranded in snow. For those who have to drive long distances in this foul weather it is advisable to have the following in the car :- spare coat, blanket, fully charged mobile phone, a shovel, water, chocolate bars etc in case if you get stuck in the snow and can't get help immediate help.
  • The unfairness of it all 23 Jan 2008 (Forum)
so there we have it, over 10 years no accidents broken by an idiot in a white van driving into me, insurance company says NCB will drop 2 years if he doesnt admit it, why 2 years?, will be driving around in a group one car if im lucky enough to get a courtesy car, and this idiot will get off with no points (waste of time ringing the police these days), but of course if I drive through a speed camera a few mph over the limit i will get hammered, my car crumpled a little too well - where can i get a family car with NO crumple zone?
  • Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - Two test drives this afternoon 11 Jan 2008 (Forum)
I am test-driving two Passats this afternoon - ex company cars. They are both 130PD diesels. Late 2002 cars. Anything I should be looking out for, over and above the excellent advice in the car-by-car guide? They are both on long service intervals.

I have a Proton Persona 1.6 automatic and have recently noticed a noise from the gearbox when engaged in Drive. When i engage reverse i hear a click as the gear angages followed by a buzzing sound which stops after 2 or 3 seconds. When i engage Drive or 2 it makes the same sound as in reverse but the buzzing continues.
  • Omega 3.0 - running hot 18 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Accelerating up a hill doesn't make the gauge get any hotter than 96C Driving down a hill with the heater on and no throttle for about 1 minute the temp dropped to 92C on the gauge. At steady motorway driving the gauge is around 95C but I'm not sure if the fans are still coming on.
  • slow Tom Tom 31 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Same thing today Middlesbrough to Wakefield. Arrived at my destination but Tom Tom tells me I still have 17 minutes driving to do even though the distance still to travel is zero. If I didn't know better I'd drive faster to make the ETA come down . Anyone else notice this? Any solutions (apart from use my common sense...
  • Astra 2l DTI - ECU light problems 7 Mar 2007 (Forum)
I have an ongoing issue with a 2L Astra DTI which vauxhall seem unable to solve. I have so far had the EGR valve and Mass Airflow meter replaced. The issue is that when driving(normally on the motorway at speed) the engine management light comes on and I lose all power. I can stop and restart the car and it goes back to normal. The car seems to hestitate a under normal driving also.

  • 405 engages gear but no drive 21 Jan 2007 (Forum)
As I arrived home I turned the wheel fairly hard left to park, and heard a grinding noise form the left front wheel, as if from the suspension/turret. Moving it this morning the same noise was evident, and then it lost all drive, apart from some expensive sounding crunching. The gears appear to engage, but all I get is the grinding noise, as if something is not quite engaged and he cogs are jumping over each other. The same in 1st and reverse, which makes me think/hope that it's outside the gear box.
  • Driving in high winds 20 Jan 2007 (Forum)
The tyres are quite narrow and it doesn't feel too stable. When do you think it's too bad to decide not to drive? The Police advise motorists to be cautious etc. I know it's about 80mph wind speed. Has anyone ever seen a car blown over, as happens to lorries? I don't feel to happy about the return commute tonight...
  • Traffic Cops 23 Nov 2006 (Forum)
There was, I thought, a rich irony in the Traffic Cops programme last night. The single mother was nicked for driving without insurance - and possibly road tax - and possibly driving licence in her clapped out Fiesta and was fined £200. She probably hasn't got tuppence to call her own. The guy in the expensive Mercedes who was found to have - I think - nine sticks of cannabis under the drivers seat, got away scot free.
  • Saxo broken drive shaft 13 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Hi Guys, My niece has just had a drive shaft on the o/s of her 'w' reg Citroen Saxo break off. I was surprised to see it was tubular rather than solid and it had ended up like a corkscrew. Also the joint attached to the gearbox had been nearly yanked out causing oil spillage.
  • Vauxhall Omega (1994 - 2003) - no drive on new automatic gearbox box 20 Apr 2006 (Forum)
I have had a small garage fit a new GM 4L30E (recon) automatic gearbox to my Omega, but there is now no drive. I got the gearbox from a working low mileage late model, and then replaced lots of seals in it, some I did myself, and some an automatic specialist did. It has then been in dry storage for 6 months.
  • Why unnecessary fog lights annoy me 11 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Fog lights are the equivalent of sticking two fingers up at everyone that the car passes by and that is what gets my personal goat. All the usual disclaimers apply, namely I am not condoning drink-driving etc.
  • Nissan Almera 28 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Hi all, I've just returned from my trip to South West Cork - very good time was had, especially enjoyed the driving :-) I rented a car which when I collected was a brand new Nissan Almera Saloon - very comfortable drive, althouhg the ride was a tad hard for some of the roads. On the small widing roads round the coast it handled superbly.
