Too big to drive? - WhiteTruckMan
Saw a disturbing sight today. Was a VERY well padded guy in a small car (isnt it always the case?)driving the M62. he was so big that he had the seat probably all the way back so he could fit behind the wheel. Problem was, he had to hunch foreward with both shoulders off the seat rear to reach the wheel. barely. not a pretty sight, but should this be allowed? I honestly dont believe he was in full control of the car, but thats just my opinion. i dont-and will not- engage in a discussion about rights and freedoms of large people, just looking to see if clinical obesity in such a big way-no pun intended-is a reason to suspend a license. After all, it can be lifted for other medical grounds.

Treading on dangerous ground here WTM, however I'm inclined to agree in that anyone who isn't in full control of their car should either have the car adapted which many physically disabled folk do or not drive.

I suspect that the insurance companies will ultimately determine who is and who isn't fit to drive.

That reminds me of being taken by my parents to view a car for sale when I was about 16. They were buying me my first car to make sure I didn't get a motorcycle. The ploy worked, but not for long.
It was one of the c.1948 Ford Prefects (E93A?). The vendor was so large that he had to lean back as far as possible to get himself installed behind the wheel. It was a non-reclining bench seat so I was sitting well back too in the small space remaining. Then he could hardly reach the wheel. The car took on an alarming list to the right when he got in which only got worse when negotiating left hand corners. No seat belts in those days. I was only mildly terrified. To top it off, one of the headlight rims fell off when I touched it and he accused me of breaking his car. Needless to say we didn't buy it. The terrible cars that we all put up with back in the sixties and early seventies in New Zealand would cause heart failure nowadays.

At the risk of being considered a Shortist its the ones who have to look through the steering wheel that worry me.

there is an elderly lady drives down our road daily and you cant actually see her in the car when she is coming towards you. it looks really odd this nissan micra coming towards you with no one in it, i feel that she cant be in proper control as she must have difficulty seeing out...cheers...keo.

Can't see that happening since they would either have to pay us GPs for reports or to examine the drivers and they do not like handing over money to us.
