405 engages gear but no drive - local yokel
I drove the 405 to Holland and back yesterday....

On the return I had some sporadic, severe steering wheel shake, which came and went twice or three times. As I arrived home I turned the wheel fairly hard left to park, and heard a grinding noise form the left front wheel, as if from the suspension/turret.

Moving it this morning the same noise was evident, and then it lost all drive, apart from some expensive sounding crunching. The gears appear to engage, but all I get is the grinding noise, as if something is not quite engaged and he cogs are jumping over each other. The same in 1st and reverse, which makes me think/hope that it's outside the gear box.

Your thoughts, gentlemen?

Left U/J??Check if the driveshaft to that side rotates without the wheel moving.

sounds like a failed c v joint ,if you look at the drive shaft it may be loose at the outer end

My tame indy mechanic had diagnosed over the phone a s a failed diff, and so will need a replacement gearbox. I'll check the CV though.

Put it in gear and got out to check! It's the diff, for certain.

Edit of above, it's the LH UJ, but I guess that's part of the diff?

From the outside in it goes: wheel, hub/brakes, CV joint (in the black rubber gaiter), driveshaft, inner tri-axe joint (also black rubebr gaiter), diff. (there's a bearing on the RH driveshaft behind the engine too). The diff is inside the gearbox and you can't see it as such (only the casing).

If you can see one of the driveshafts turning then the CV joint on that side is gone. If you can see just the cup at the inner joint turning then the inner joint is shot. If neither shaft is turning then the diff is shot. If only the CV joint, then it's just a case of replacing the duff shaft - pretty easy if it's the short N/S shaft. If the diff is gone then it's replacement box time - a whole lot more difficult and expensive!

It sounds to me like the CV joint has failed - should be pretty cheap to put right with a S/H shaft.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

You might be lucky, it does sound like CV / drive shaft and not diff/box, fingers crossed.

I'd say that the turning hard left was the thing that would make me think it was a CV driveshaft problem.

Towed it in to my indy man, and he agrees with the wise counsel given above. Not a diff/box, but a driveshaft. Cheers all, as I was about to order a box via breakeryard.com (great service btw, 10+ offers of new box from breakers, inc delivery, inside an hour) and had prepped myself for a big bill.

The 405 gearbox is bulletproof, only fitting stupid big wheels or wheelspinning starts will kill one given time & abuse.

A pattern driveshaft at £121 and an hour of labour and we were mobile.
