• BMW 320d fuel/oil leak 27 Jul 2006 (Forum)
  My recently purchased 51 plate 320d touring (30k with full BMWSH) has been dropping small quantities of what I believe is either diesel or oil on my drive. There is also a strong smell of diesel coming through air con when sitting at junction etc. Are these 2 issues likely to be linked? I saw an item on this website about a known issue on 320d of this age saying fuel pump and filters are likely to need changing) The car was purchased from Lloyds Bank Car Select and came with full warranty.

  Hi all. For the second time my garage has charged for diesel fuel additive during a full service (helps keep the exhaust and emissions system clean supposedly)... Trouble is that I've fitted a locking fuel cap with a separate key that wasn't handed over at either service..

  Helo,..my home mechanic mate had a diesel come in which had petrol put in by accident.Not being one to waste fuel -He pumped the petrol out and mixed it with diesel ending up with 70% diesel and 30% petrol.He put it in his 730 petrol bmw and it runs sweeter than it did on petrol so i was wondering what could be a downside to doing this long term?..

  One thing that makes me choose petrol is the little-publicised deleterious effect on heater performance of the slower rate of warm-up of the diesel engine coolant, particularly at idle. (Caused, of course, by the greater fuel efficiency of the diesel engine ~ there, I've admitted it !) Parking outside overnight in frosty weather usually sorts the petrol men from the diesel boys. -- L'escargot by name, but not by nature.

  This might seem a bit of a silly question,but after many petrol cars I'm now on my first diesel. I notice (especially with the dark nights) a fair amount of white diesel smoke/haze on pulling away and when pulling from low revs. How much smoke should I expect from a diesel? I assume that black smoke is a fueling problem etc but I'm not sure about any other colours!

  Have a C6 with 78000 miles 2.2 Diesel engine For past year have had intermittant fuel system fault . the car cruising at any speed, any road will suddenly misfire either just once or twice some times more  then may nor recurr for days/weeks.

  They said it could be dirt in the fuel system and said they cleaned out the tank and fuel system. After that hadn't made any difference they then said it could be the micro filters in the injectors and they would need replaced costing at least £1000 on top of the £700 pounds they charged for the injector pump to be reconditioned.

  of 47.4 mpg, where 42 is more typical. I've still got a couple of long trips to do this week, so I'll use the regular fuel as a control, to see if it's the fuel or the journey. But it's the sound I'm interested in. Anyone else noticed any audible effects of 'premium' fuels?

  Hello i'm trying to find were i fill up the diesel additive, as i'm getting the warning on the dash 'diesel additive minimum level' i've purchased a filling kit for £30 but can't find were to attach it, i've looked on the fuel sender unit under the o/s rear seat but can only see the fuel feed and return lines, please please can anybody help, i understand you have to take the vehicle to a st ealer to have the ecu updated that it has been replenished, is there a cheaper alternative?

  However, his methods of doing this have left me somewhat baffled. I know that he disconnected both the supply and return fuel lines leaving the diesel filter going to the tandem pump and whether he attempted to draw fuel through the filter or back from the tandem pump I don't know. However he did say he was finding it difficult to suck the fuel through.

  The concern I have is that 95%+ of her journeys are going to be short ones, less than 5 miles from a cold start, plenty of it stop / start traffic. What would the real world fuel economy of a Diesel engine vs Petrol from a cold start over a short distance be (I presume the Petrol would warm up quicker)? I've also heard a number of horror stories of particulate filters clogging and severe fuel dilution of oil after only 3k when a car has been subjected to such short journey abuse.

  So far: Garage 1, Visit 1: fitted 4 new fuel injectors and serviced the car. Two days later, an engine warning light came on and the car started stalling again. Garage 1, Visit 2: replaced the EGR valve and checked the engine fuel recycling system.

  A combination of the leasing costs on my company's scheme, list price, emissions etc means that a BMW 318i Touring looks like a very attractive replacement for my current Ford Focus Estate 2.0TDCi. One factor that may actually make the maths even more favorable is that in moving from a diesel to a petrol I benefit from the increasing difference in cost between the two fuels and the fact that for my business miles I will be able to claim 3p a mile more. All this assumes that the BMW Efficient Dynamics really do make the fuel consumption of the 318i only about 10% worse than my Diesel Focus in the real world.

  Ive been wondering this for a while, with fuel prices rising more and more people switching to Diesel cars, indeed for the first time new car sales has had Diesels in the majority in the UK, but is it a false economy? In almost every case brand new the diesel variant of a car will cost more than its petrol equivalent, even with better fuel economy and lower VED it can take 1-3 years (even on medium-high mileage) to break even and then begin to see profit.
