  manifold pipe I can hear a hiss from the filler cap even though the coolant seems to coming from the (overflow?) pipe when it does leak. I want to keep hold of the car (last owner changed oil/filters etc every 10k, and it is in good nick) but if it is the head gasket will prob try and get money back from trader (only had the car a week) and they had been running it before selling so surley must've been aware of coolant loss??

  Chaps, I'm getting a little worried about the Mondeo's cooling system which is dropping some hints recently that all is not well. It has the following symptoms: 1) Slight coolant loss. As in MAX to MIN on the expansion tank every 2,500-3,000 miles or so. 2) Whiffs of hot coolant particularly at the end of a long run when parking up, and when first getting out of the car.

  I got my car back yesterday and there is now a trickling/liquid sound coming from the car. Doesnt seem like there are any oil leaks in the engine bay and it would appear the coolant is stable. I have also noticed that the engine appears to be very hot when you stop (have been checking for leaks etc periodically). Can anyone think what the issue might be? Im hoping the block isnt cracked but its about the only thing I can think of at this point?

  Potentially could be a blown gasket but then surely the coolant level would decrease significantly.

  Attempting to assist  a friend replacing the copper seal on fuel injector as it was puffing mist into the engine compartment while running. injector removed and evidence of leak past distorted  seal, dressed the seat in the head with correct tool, replaced  the injector using new copper washer and stretch bolt, torqued to correct figure and then the correct degree to tighten. on start, found to be the same and when stretch bolt was removed coolant started pouring out, re did the job with thicker washer and same again, transpires the mist being ejected is coolant. does anyone know why engine coolant would be pumping out the bolt hole, cracked head or cylinder head gasket blown?

  No warning lights Diagnostics measuring matches the temp guage overhating (120 degress) But driving wasy around town this never goes ove the 90 marks Coolant temp sensor, thermostat, water pump an secondary water pump all replaced at separate times and the bled air out properly each time.  Whenever I open the expansion bottle cap after driving, big whoosh noise and coolant trickles out The coolant level never drops in the car, when the hot cabin air is switched on it is very consistent until turned off, no drop of MPG

  Hi all, Hoping you guys can help me out. Ive got a pretty fast  coolant leak which seems to be coming form the inlet manifolt gasket. Its on the drivers side at the back of the engine block, just behind the dipstick. I wouldn't mind having a crack at it myself to save a few £ and learn as ive only recently took aninterest in a bit of motoring DIY.

  Hi I am concerned about my van, I know this is a car forum but I'm sure it will apply to all diesel engines. My van - '08 plate, 110k, seems to lack a bit of power, expect it to have about 20% more, no coolant leak, temp is fine,no mix of water /oil or anything. Had a gasket sniff test done - came back ok. No waring lights on so this is why I'm worried it might be a head gasket/engine crack problem. Is the next stage to have a compression test?

  Car starts first time and does not stall. Idle is fine no hunting etc... I unplugged what I thought was the coolant temp sensor on the side of the engine gearbox side, car started fine etc still had problem as mentioned above. All this seemed to do was stop the temp gauge on the dash working. Are there 2 sensors one for the gauge on the dash and one for the ecu??

  But, i have since realised that the cooling system is becoming pressureised as the water isn't hot and the water resavoir releif stopper is releasing the pressure and the coolant is now a rusty colour..... ive taken the car back to the garage that did the work but he is telling me he cant detect a problem......

  Gentlemen The engine on this is pretty solid and I had the cylinder head fixed by a trustworthy garage about 2 years ago. It has been losing coolant very slowly though, and I keep it topped up. Now it loses coolant more rapidly BUT the temp gauge has started going about four fifths to the top, then back to normal for about 10 minutes, then repeating.

  hi new here, just noticed a coolant leak , puddle under car after doing a 60 mile run, and another running drizzle from under car after 60 mile return journey, the temp guage hasnt been above mid way, no rough idel or running as yet, it did seem a little under powered after about 90 miles struggled a little up hill at 60mph it a zetec engine, auto gearbox cant see where leaking from but seems to be from rear of engine bay, havnt been able to get under it yet co i got a dodgy neck and cant move too well, any ideas?

  Have changed the coolant mix as well, but now at the limit of my capabilities. Are there any other sensors worth trying? Is there one in the coolant bottle that would trigger this light? One more thought, this started happening just after I got the speedo replaced due to it failing.

  I have recently acquired a S40 1.9 TD SE on a 98 plate and have a question. Apart from a normal service I want to change the coolant, my nearest Volvo dealer is over a 30 mile round trip away so I popped in to Halfords and brought some Anti freeze which is red in colour and is a silicate free organic acid formula to Volvo / Renault 41-01-001 standard.

  Despite never using for short journeys I get mayonaisse on the dipstick and in 25000 miles have had to add over a litre of coolant. To me this indicates a head gasket failure? The dealer (who seem thorough and competent) have found no leak despite pressure testing and checking the heater circuit and \"asking BMW if they had any instances like this\".

  Doing some research with regard to when to change the coolant on my Primera 2.0 SRi 1998 model (32k) I read that the concentration should be maintained at 50% & checks on the presence of corosion inhibitors being indicated by the level of alkalinity of the fluid.It gave no level of alkalinity but suggested that if was alkaline then there was no need to ghange the coolant.The alkalinity can be easily checked with litmus paper.I consulted a Nissan specialist who does most of my maintenance and he said that he checked the concentration on a service and if it was adequate he would not recommend a change.His primera has covered some 160,000 mls.

  -Low coolant warning light came on today, after a 150 mile journey last night. Engine cold when light came on. -Very slow loss of coolant (the pint I replaced is still there after driving around, and the car has been driven a few thousand miles since having coolant replaced) -Loss of power when cold.

  Would this symptom mean head gasket problems and also how rapidly would the coolant level in the reservoir drop if coolant were getting into the engine and coming out of the exhaust pipe (the white smoke) ?? thanks bud

  I said I would investigate and after investigating it was intact the coolant tank reservoir which I told him would need replacing plus a coolant replacement, I performed a simple coolant flush and changed the bottle which was quite simple and because I gave him a choice of a garage doing it or myself and he said he wanted to go with the cheaper option.
