  • Rover 400 (1995 - 1999) - 1997 1.6 Test for slipping torque converter please 14 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Acceleration is pathetic and engine revs seem higher than we would expect for any given speed. Kickdown works. Putting your foot down increases the revs but negligible acceleration. Fuel consumption as about 28mpg on a long run. Any ideas for how to check if torque converter is faulty, it feels like the fluids are flowing too easily in it, the vanes not trapping the fluid well enough allowing the revs to increase but no acceleration.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 02 1.8tdci severe cold start problems 9 Jan 2009 (Forum)
I am experiencing severe cold start problems once the temperature drops to 1 degree or colder and the car has been sitting overnight. In the last month I have had service, new battery, glow plugs and fuel sensor valve fitted - all by Ford main dealer - and it's still happening ... they tell me that without a diagnostic code reading they dont know whats wrong ... Engine turns over and over and over and over and doesnt fire.
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 1998 1.3 being a little odd 17 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Its quite odd as it doesn't always do it and if it does it only does it at this speed and gear combo. Possible thoughts are the spark plugs oooooor something in the fuel line. Slight ticking noise as well coming near window screen wipers as well but thats intermittent too. any ideas??? thank you adam
  • Volvo V50 (2004 - ) - 05 2.0 diesel - Returning a car due to poor mpg 4 Nov 2008 (Forum)
We have had it approx 6 weeks and it has been back to the garage twice incudiong once for a software upgrade (at this point in increased from 28 MPG to 35 MPG). I dont think the car is running correctly due to the fuel we are going through. Cheers
  • Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 94 1.8 several mk3 questions - where is stuff type 31 Oct 2008 (Forum)
I've looked on the chassis plate and on the engine chassis itsself but not seen anything (ABU, ABS, etc?) code like. 2) Where are the fuel injector(s) - I assume hidden on the back? (towards the cabin) How do I tell if its single point vs Multipoint injection (unless when I can find the injectors there are more than one?) 3) Where is the crankshaft sensor?
  • Ever been accused of driving off without paying? 27 Oct 2008 (Forum)
It sounds like you door is being battered in... ...I answered the door and seeing two uniformed there I expected to be told some really bad news. It was too! They verify receipt and confirm payment for purchase was legally offered - cashier at fault as she applied payment to wrong purchase.
  • Ford Focus III (2008 - ) - Petrol vs. diesel 11 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Settled on replacing SWMBO's 1.3 Corolla with a Focus, which fulfils her criteria of not being showy, cheap to run, reliable and big enough but not too big. 1.6 engine. It will do 8,000 miles a year, and I calculate (allowing for differentials in fuel costs, servicing, mpg, road tax) that Drivethedeal's prices would allow us to recoup the additional premium for a diesel car over a petrol one in 3 years. These calcs based on a Zetec. So ... which is it to be?

Consequence: Remedy: DEALER WILL INSTALL THE REQUIRED LABELS AND PLACARDS TO COMPLY WITH THE STANDARDS.
  • Upgrading from MkII Mondeo - any ideas? 29 Aug 2008 (Forum)
I am looking to quickly jack in my 2000 MkII 1.8 petrol Mondeo before the clutch finally gives in, but unfortunately as per usual on a budget (circa £2.5k)! The trouble is I'm not quite sure where to look. Despite the credit crunch, fuel prices etc. etc. I enjoy driving too much to be overly sensible and want to upgrade to something possibly bigger, probably upwards of 2litre, that will be comfortable and sensible when I need it to be, but also enjoyable when I want it to be, and something that isn't going to hit me with four figure bills every time a bulb or fuse goes...
  • Nissan Micra (1992 - 2003) - 1994 1.0 automatic: car stalling 22 Aug 2008 (Forum)
iv only had this car for a few weeks and for some reason it cuts out after 15 mins with no warning then a light on the dash comes up with ncvt. i can start the car up normally again but am very worried about what this means. also sometimes the car jerks slightly and feels as though it may just cut out until i rev the engine. Also has anyone heard of 'not enough air in the fuel tank' as apparently i also have this problem which also makes the car cut out. as you can imagine it would be quicker to get a bus the amount of times it stalls.
  • DIY- Interest, Summer Servicing completed (you?) 16 Aug 2008 (Forum)
All the detailed `extra`s` such as antifreeze and distilled water, rustproofing of brake pipes/sumps/subframes and so on. Best synthetic oils, clean latex gloves on handling fuel/oil/air filter elements. All those little details that you do yourself with no time constraints on the job. Must have saved quite a bit in labour, servicing and repairs on our cars so far this year, which will pay for the hotels and meals in France later.
  • Volkswagen Golf V (2004 - 2008) - 2005 2Ltr TDI Bad starting 15 Aug 2008 (Forum)
i have just bought the car and a full 60k service was carried out at 55k 12/07 I have removed the bleed screw from the fuel filter and turned the ign on with my finger covering it and the pressure of the electric lift pump in the tank is identical to a good atarting car.
  • causing a hold up at the pumps 12 Jul 2008 (Forum)
A few weeks ago I was in Perth Scotland.Having an empty tank I filled up at Tescos , before I had a full tank the pump shut off and I had to que up and pay.I mentioned to the cashier it would have been nice to have got a full tank of fuel before the pump shut off.The explenation was the pump shuts off after 3 minutes as a safety precaution and no one else complains.Well says I most people have probably not an empty tank as they are local, I am completety empty due to driving up from south.

Diesel Fuel filters filter 1) The element composed of a very high quality looking `fleece`, squeezable (only done with old one) no surface imperfections. Filter2) looking as rough as a bears bottom, a hard wound on synthetic material with splintering off flakes standing out at angles on the surface.
  • Monday moan about car parks 7 Jul 2008 (Forum)
It means if the bay in front of you is empty, you can't drive forwards and out, oh no that'd be too simple. Instead you have to waste more fuel and time reversing out and run the increased risk of being rear ended by Darren in his knackered Saxo racing up to get to Halfords before they shut! Aaaagh. thank you, rant over.
  • DIY bio-diesel 2 Jul 2008 (Forum)
I missed HJ's announcement of the relaxation of duty on this sort of fuel for personal use (http://tinyurl.com/2zutd2 ), but it came up on the radio yesterday, together with a discussion on DIY conversion kits for spent oil from chippies. What particularly amused me was the admission by HMRC that the previous arrangement was costing them more to collect than it was grossing, so it's not really generosity on their part!
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 1999 tddi - scrap or repair? 3 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Hi All I have a 'T' reg ('99) Tddi Focus estate with 125K on the clock that broke down yesterday. After being towed to the garage it's been diagnosed with a bust fuel pump which will cost £700 for the pump, £300 labour plus VAT on top to replace. (I browsed the owners club website and it seems that this price is pretty much par for the course) A quick search on autotrader showed a couple of similar cars advertised for around £1700. so what I'm trying to decide at the moment is whether to fork out the dough and hope nothing else goes wrong or scrap it.
  • LPG Taxation 27 May 2008 (Forum)
Hi all, just a quick question, does anyone have any information about the government's plans for taxation on LPG fuel next year? The last that I heard and the tax was fixed until 2009 but I've found no mention of what will happen after that date. I would hope that at worst there would be a gradual increase to narrow the gap between LPG and petrol over a period of several years, but my gut tells me that this government can't be trusted and would probably make an abrupt change.
  • BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 03 2.5 Wheel overheating 26 May 2008 (Forum)
I would put this down to the brakes binding but the car does not pull to one side when braking. Performance and fuel economy seem to be OK. Anyone with any ideas?
  • Almost 80mpg, getting nearer as engine loosens 22 May 2008 (Forum)
The Multijet engine in the Mk2b van is nicely loosened up at 20,000 and is getting better all the time on fuel consumption. Because of its lighter weight though I suspect the HDI engined Citroen C1 could beat it. Regards
