  • Corsa Diesel - Glow Plug Problem 10 Jul 2004 (Forum)
The problem that we have is with starting. It "eats" glow plugs. We have had 3 new sets within a few months of each other. When I take the car to the garage it may be that 2 plugs are not working and are covered in black. This is after a we have had to get the AA out because the car won't start. Even when we had the latest plugs fitted it didn't exactly "leap" into life upon cold start.
  • Diesel starting - glow plugs help 24 Aug 2002 (Forum)
Can you help with the folowing problem - now when starting the glow plug light comes on constant, then starts to flash, then goes off. Car turns over very well, but only starts reluctantly. Once started the engine runs fine, glow plug light then begins to flash on and off about 6 - 8 times then stays off. Its not damp and all connections seem tight and OK, there is no Haynes manual for this car, and the Haynes generic Diesel engine manual only covers the VW 1.9 D engines, and says nothing about starting systems anyway, the VW Golf manual with car only says "if Glow plug light begins to flash call expert assistance" Any constuctive advice would be helpful, thanks
  • Saab 900 Convertible. 12 Jun 2001 (Forum)
So are they any good as a family car? Is the HJ guide right in saying they are poor to drive? How much of the Vauxhall floorpan/suspension do they use? What goes wrong that HJ hasn' covered? Do the hoods last, how much to relace? I was horrified by the prices when checking this morning, £10,000 for a '94?

  • Mini Cooper - Trade sale gone sour 17 Oct 2021 (Forum)
I offered the customer a full refund or as an alternative, to recover the car and have the repairs carried out for her. As she was a distance from me, she took the car to a private garage who ran up a £350 bill. Knowing this had voided her warranty but not wishing to leave her dissatisfied, I offered to help the customer by making a contribution towards the cost of said repairs as a gesture of goodwill.
  • Vauxhall Antara - Bought used car without warranty - Advice please 5 Aug 2020 (Forum)
I bought it without warranty, as it was a part-ex and unfortunately this particular dealership has a policy of no test drives, due to the current Covid-19 situation. The car has a full Vauxha service history and a great MOT history, as well as appearing physically looked after. Unfortunately, on the drive home I noticed excessive vibration in the car. After a bit of googling, I found that the dual mass flywheel is a common issue and creates this exact problem.

  • Hyunda i40 - Gearbox & Clutch Problems. 8 Feb 2017 (Forum)
Took delivery of a new Hyundai i40 last year. Not purchased, just leased as a company car. Almost 12 months old now but already covered nearly 30,000 miles mainly motorway. I have concerns with the gearbox and clutch. When the mornings are very cold and icy the gearbox is very stiff, although when the engine reaches operating temperature this improves.Occasionally from a start it is difficult to select first gear.
  • Nissan Qashqai - Engine revved itself to death 31 Aug 2016 (Forum)
I got over to the hard shoulder and that was it, engine no go go. At least no fire, family ok. So my breakdown cover got the car taken to a Nissan dealership in Spain, who quoted £6000 for a new engine and turbo. Now I'm getting the car repatriated to the UK, to be assessed and repaired. Which brings me to my question: The used engine replacing / re-manufacturing industry seems particularly dodgy and a total minefield.

  • Mercedes E320 - Neighbour's roof slate smashed on car! 15 Sep 2011 (Forum)
My father-in-law's car (Merc E320) was hit by a fallen slate from his neighbour's roof, causing £980 worth of roof and boot damage. It was quite an impact, sufficient to cause the interior vanity light to fall off!
  • FIAT Seicento - Car vs using the bus 30 Mar 2011 (Forum)
I wonder if you know of any way to work out how much per week/month/year poor road surfaces cost the average car user.  I haven't had any noticeable damage...yet...but worry that one more sunken manhole cover will mean I have to pay hundreds in repairs.  (I heard a taxi driver say once that he had to get new tyres every month and was forever having his taxi mended; got me a bit worried).
  • Vauxhall Vectra C (2002 - 2008) - 52 reg Vectra broken - dilema to repair or sell 25 Nov 2009 (Forum)
The car sounds to be otherwise fine, has done 77K miles and the normal driving routine is urban but with longer journey every few weeks. Some work was also done to the suspension last year. It is new enough not to be covered under the scrappage scheme (hence some of the angst!).
  • Extortionate recovery charges 1 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Youngest future DiL (18) passed her test 13 months ago and just had her first accident. She rear ended a car, and in the process wrote her car off...fortunately low speed and no injuries. The attending police told her that her car could not be left at the side of the road, and gave her the number of a local recovery company.
  • Volkswagen Golf V R32 (2005 - ) - 06 3.2 dual mass flywheel problem 10 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Just two years old and done 29,000 miles. This weekend without any previous warning it wouldnt get in to any gear. The car was towed to VW for investigation and repair. VW now say the problem is not a warranty (60k miles/3 years) covered item as it is due to hot spots on the fly wheel, with excessive movement in the dual mass suspension.
  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 07 1.6 Clutch/Flywheel Ford warranty 16 Apr 2009 (Forum)
I have a 07 1.6 focus zetec and had problems with the gears slipping out of 2nd, 3rd at slow speed around town, and not being able to select reverse without double pressing the clutch. i took it to my local ford dealer, as i have only had the car from Oct 08 and it is still under warranty(Ford Direct). They had the car for a couple of days and could'nt find any faults with it. I received a service inspection sheet, that had cleared the car of any faults.
  • Non Fault Claims 20 Feb 2009 (Forum)
This is my first post so please bear with me if this has been covered somewhere else. I have read through the FAQs which answered most of my questions but I need some advice. Long story short, i was rear ended at a roundabout nearly 2 weeks ago. The 3rd party has admitted liability and i have been supplied with courtesy car as my car has been written off.
  • Ford Fiesta (2002 - 2008) - REPAIRED-DAMAGE-Effect on Warranty 20 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Last week my wifes 2005 fiesta which we have owned fronm newwas invoved in a serious accident (not her fault).he entire side has been smashed including the windscreen post and floor is bent. The car has only covered 6000 miles from new. The insurance companies "approved repairer" has given a quote of £3300 to repair it. This is about £2000 less than the car is worth prior to accident. I am not comftable with the idea of them repairing such extensive damage.
  • First Car 9 Feb 2008 (Forum)
However, I do not recieve this "EMA" which I think is a joke so my money will be even more stretched. I feel bad asking my parents for £10 a week to cover lunch and money aside for books etc. Anyway, I am currently learning to drive and I will need to acquire some transportation. I have been asking around at College for which they think in their opinion they render the most reliable car.
