  • Not another..? 11 Mar 2002 (Forum)
"It resembled a driving manoeuvre a motorist would use to dislodge something under the car, such as a cardboard box," he said. Asked by coroner's counsel Tom Schneider if he concluded from the marks that the driver was aware that there was something under her car, the 28-year veteran officer replied: "Yes."
  • Honda CR-V - Does new shock absorbers increase the driving comf 26 Sep 2022 (Forum)
Hi, I would like ask if I can do anything to increase comfort of driving of my old CR-V (2009)? My current driving experience in this car is like driving a pick-up truck (driving is stiff / firm, lots of under the car noise, little like driving a tractor ), but CR-V is also a family car.
  • BMW 3 Series - BMW lane departure 16 Apr 2019 (Forum)
I bought an approved used BMW (6 months old at the time of buying) a year ago and the car is still under manufacturer's warranty till next year. Few months ago, I noticed that the lane departure light was turning on but the sensor was not doing anything.
  • 1.4 - Buying a second hand Golf 8 Apr 2015 (Forum)
A friend passed me this interesting and unusual advice which I guess applies to anyone any thinking of buying a second hand car-although in his case it is nearly always Golfs Every  three or four years he nearly always buys a car from a dealer( not necessarily VW) that has done around 60k, is around 6 years old.
  • New Car Help Please. 22 Aug 2014 (Forum)
Hi, so I am in need of a new car as we have a baby on the way and my 2004 RS 182 is not big enough. I have been looking at varoius reviews of cars for weeks now, from 4X4's, Crossovers, sensible family cars but nothing interests me so I think i have narrowed it down to the following, I am looking at stuff about 4 years old and 4-5 door.
  • Vauxhall Frontera - Car dealer won't honour warranty 11 Feb 2013 (Forum)
Hi, I wonder if anyone can give any advice. Bought a used Vauxhall Frontera on the 30th November.  Traded in our old vehicle and paid a further £650 cash.  The car was advertised and sold with a three month warranty. Fast forward to the first week in January and the car starts misfiring.  Took it to a local garage who tells us that the head gasket/valves need work and the car is firing on only two of the four cylinders.
  • economical car recommendations? 13 Oct 2011 (Forum)
My budget needs to be under 10K, and I don't want something that is too old/has too many miles on the clock already. Maybe this is an impossible dream(!) I really don't know much about cars so I'd welcome any advice! Thanks in advance.
  • Audi A6 Avant (2005 - ) - Trying to prepay to avoid VAT increase on new Audi 20 Dec 2009 (Forum)
This is not what I want as I agreed delivery in March (it suits me due to my current car will be 3 months short of being 3 years old and I feel i've added enough miles and use to make the most of the depreciation) The question is - what is the problem with me prepaying the dealer before Xmas to avoid the VAT increase and then registering the car March 1st?
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 03 1.8 Steering Noise 30 Apr 2009 (Forum)
It's a 1.8 LX, 53 reg, 39,000 miles and has a 3-month old MOT. Thanks in anticipation of your help/ideas.
  • MOT advisories - what do they really mean? 21 Jul 2008 (Forum)
I fell out with the owner and consequently won't have a car we really liked because I insisted the car must be absolutely right before I exported it and it immediately faced the French 'controle technique' test. The owner said the advisories don't really mean anything and should be expected to happen with any car more than a few years old.
  • Cars still being flogged to death, no saving then? 23 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Made me wonder, as belts are tightened in coming months, will this on and off pedal to the metal thwacking continue while ever the car is on the road. Sort of, "can only afford £10 worth of fuel love, no food in the fridge" then off up the road, in the old 4w Road-Tractor or fading Luxo-scrote.... thump-thwack-pedal-clack-surge-brake-lurch... 12mpg Put simply, at what point will smooth economical driving start?
  • SEAT Ibiza II (1993 - 1999) - '99 Cupra 2.0 8v GTi - good car? 5 May 2008 (Forum)
and easy to drive at a slower pace and round town. 31 mpg on a fast run wasn't too bad from a 2.0 engine either, I thought. Faults, given it's a 8/9 year old car? First and second are very stiff and clunky, the clutch is a bit stiff and theres a worrying 'shunt' from the chassis when floored in second if dropping down quickly from third, but that may just be the effect of a comparitively powerful engine in a small, lightweight car.
  • Renault Scenic (2003 - 2009) - 2004 1.9dci - Dilemma - Sell now or in New Year 14 Nov 2007 (Forum)

  • Max 6 months in rest of Europe? 29 Oct 2007 (Forum)
One of HJ's old columns has a story about someone getting hit by an untaxed English registered car in France. HJ then says you can only use a British registered car overseas for 6 months on any 12. But where does it actually say this?
  • Second car up to £2500 - suggestions 6 Sep 2007 (Forum)
She's done about 5,000 miles in that time and we have agreed that it doesn't make sense to have £10k tied up in a car that we don't really use very much. The second car gets used for regular 14 mile round trips and the occasional 60 mile round trip. We thought we'd like a small-ish car for easier parking at the supermarket and making the most of small parking spaces.
  • Dealer ruined my NEW car 5 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Shortly after I find out from another source that it was sprayed because of damage to it whilst at a bodyshop. (which I know is a lie) A new car with just a smige over 1000miles on the clock and new it has been resprayed???? Where do I stand, I really don't want a car that is barely over a month old which has been repainted against my will.
  • Polishing a car 23 Feb 2006 (Forum)
The car is in bright red, non-metallic, and I am worried about it going pink. The car has been waxed and water droplets are beading nicely at present. Should I remove this polish before using the resin polish and what should I use?
  • Servicing my car 15 Dec 2004 (Forum)
I can't help thinking I'm just paying for nothing really and i'd be better off just changing the oil every 5k miles - coolant etc is the Ford 'long life' stuff that apparently never needs changing, it had new plugs at the last service, etc etc. Hopefully, when I finish with my car, it will be at least 7-8 years old, and obviously will still be high mileage so will the FFSH even make any difference at resale time? What do you chaps think?
  • Another accident thread 23 Jun 2003 (Forum)
One is an uninsured 40ish woman, the other is an insured 19 year old guy. The woman claims £40 per day for the loss of her car, plus for the damage to her car. There are no claims for personal injury or anything and she is prosecuted for driving without insurance.
  • Is Duratec HE engine reliable? 10 Apr 2003 (Forum)
There must surely now be some that have covered high mileages. Is there anything to check for on these cars other than the items listed in 'car-by-car breakdown'? A final query - does anyone know if it is possible to get a discount for 'no p/ex' off the Ford Direct prices, or are they pretty much 'fixed' like 'car supermarket' prices?
