  • novice: timing chains and oil changes 29 May 2005 (Forum)
I'm seen it said several times now that timing chains thrive on regular oil changes. As a mechanical dunce, I struggle to see the connection. Isn't the chain on the 'outside' of the engine and the oil on the 'inside'? If so, how does the quality of the oil affect the operation of the chain?
  • Honda Accord 2.0 2001 manual - Transmission Oil change 15 Apr 2010 (Forum)

  • is there no end to the oil changes 2 May 2015 (Forum)
I splashed out, ho ho, on a Kranzle power washer, my last one was basically a toy in comparison, it has a dipstick and takes 15w40 engine oil...requires an annual oil change apparently. Now my question to the assembly, would using 5w40 full synthetic mean i can put it on long life servicing.:-) No, it's a leg pull it'll get the proper oil changed annually.
  • Easy DIY Oil Change Advice 29 Jan 2002 (Forum)
I've always done my oil changes in the past by reaching under the car to get to the sump nut but either with advancing years or lower cars (suspect the former!) I can no longer reach. How do most people do home oil changes, ramps or axle stands?
  • Subaru Legacy - New diesel - first oil change advice 28 Apr 2011 (Forum)
My dealer recommends an oil change after the first thousand miles.  I think I recollect reading here that such an early oil change is not a good idea  but I cannot remember why.  Sorry if this is covering old ground.
  • What's your oil change regimen? 3 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Hi, Just wondering what method people recommend when changing oil. Are you the "drain, change filter, refill, start engine" type or is it worth taking a little more time to pre-fill the oil filter, dry crank with plugs removed etc. Alex
  • oil changes. 10 Jan 2002 (Forum)
How often should I change the oil in a Nissan Micra if I purchase it from new. Should I change both the oil and filter after the first 1000 miles, and then every 4500 miles which is twice the manufactorers recommendation.
  • All - Oil Changes 12 Apr 2013 (Forum)
Blimey, if you can't afford to change the oil and filter now and then, you can't afford to run a car. Go by bus.

  • 6 monthly oil change. Too often? 10 Jan 2007 (Forum)
I've always changed the oil and filter in my year 2000 Golf TDI every 6 months (approx 5000miles) , always using the correct VW spec oil and OEM filters. Recently I read a couple of threads where folks stated that changing the oil so frequently was unnecessary and that the interval could be pushed to 8000 miles without any additional engine related wear.
  • First Oil Change 15 Oct 2001 (Forum)

  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 99 1.8 Engine oil & filter change question? 23 Nov 2008 (Forum)
The garage did an oil and filter change but used 10W/40 oil instead of 5W/30. They agreed to replace the oil with the correct 5W/30 type engine oil one day later. I am not sure whether or not they used a new filter when they replaced the 10W/40 oil with 5W/30 or whether they kept the oil filter they fitted when they used 10W/40 oil to start with.

  • Vauxhall Adam - Oil change or wait? 17 Jun 2017 (Forum)
Hi I wonder if anyone could advise. The oil change light has come on. The car is at 10,000 miles and the service is due in September. Had a look at the level and the oil looks quite clean and is half way down. Should I change it now or wait the 2.5 month until the service?
  • Corsa oil change rattle concerns 3 Oct 2016 (Forum)
After the change however, upon start up the engine has a very metallic rattle for 5 seconds. This was never present before the oil change. If I stop the engine and restart soon there is no rattle. My simplistic view / thought is that all the oil is draining from the camshafts when the engine is standing and needs to wait for the oil pump to pressurise.
  • Corolla 2001 Engine Oil Change 11 Jan 2007 (Forum)

  • Vauxhall Cavalier (1988 - 1995) - 93 1.7td (Isuzu) Changing the oil filter cleanly! 27 Dec 2007 (Forum)
I've got a 1993 cavalier with the 1.7 td isuzu engine. Whenever I change the oil I make a right mess when undoing the oil filter - it's nearly horizontal and in an awkward place at the back of the engine. Any tips on how to change the filter without soaking the starter motor with oil?
