  • US Camper vans 18 Dec 2001 (Forum)
They will use it to drive around London and for holidays with their two kids. I have warned them about the fuel consumption - I reckon 18mpg at very best. They have been told that parts are very cheap and it is almost rust free - anything else they should be wary of or check? Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
  • Lethargic panel light 17 Nov 2001 (Forum)
I can turn the lights on and off and the warning lamp works properly). I heard somewhere that these new fangled dashboards have processors to drive the instruments (fuel gauge etc) so is it likely that they use the processor to switch on warning lamps too? Do any of the usual technical suspects have any idea? Contributions gratefully received to alleviate head scratching.
  • LPG and the Channel Tunnel 15 Oct 2001 (Forum)
While waiting at the check-in for the Shuttle I noticed that LPG fuelled vehicles appear to be banned from using the Tunnel, at least I assume that's what the sign with a car with LPG written on it and a big red line through it means. Seemed to mean banned for things like guns etc.anyway. Thought crossed my mind as to why? Is LPG fuel that much more volatile? Another thought was if enough people are convinced by the cost factor to convert to LPG then will they become accepted through the Tunnel or will they just have no customers and end up having to put a cork in the end?
  • Help with cold running/Starting. 7 Sep 2001 (Forum)
The 'not starting without the foot on the gas' bit. Could it be overfueling and stamping on the gas clears the extra fuel when the air rushes through?
  • In the Can 13 Aug 2001 (Forum)
Yesterday the pump attendant at our supermarket informed me that they had been visited by a jobsworth from the local Trading Standards who told them that it was only permitted for customers to fill two cans at a time. Whilst I know that there are limits on storing fuel, this is the first I have heard of limits on the sale. Apparently the speedboat owners who use the same garage to fill up for their outboards on the way to the coast are not too happy either. Has anyone else encountered this problem?
  • Diesel or petrol for my new car? 22 Feb 2001 (Forum)
I know diesel is more economic (more mpg) and has a lot of torque in low gears, but I don't want anything that is sluggish at higher speeds. I'd like my car to be stylish and a good performer, but not to cripple me with insurance and fuel bills. I like the Seat Ibiza Cupra, but I think insurance will be a b*****d. Any suggestions/ comments on choice or on the diesel/ petrol thing? Thanks a lot, Giles
  • Poor service at Honda dealers 15 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I'm in work and I get a phone call from the servicing manager. 'Hello, we've had some problems with the car. It's actually a primary fuel filter that we've changed that sits inside the fuel pump that's in the tank. We've changed it but now the car isn't starting. I've been on to Honda Technical Uk, and they've advised me that the fuel filter on this car should never be changed it's a lifetime filter, and the servicing schedule sheet you have is wrong.
  • Ford Focus - Advice on buying a second hand car 7 Sep 2022 (Forum)
This car was used as a family car for general driving around as well as for long journeys, and I was very pleased with it due to its reliability and fuel efficiency. As I am now in the position of needing to purchase another car, and as someone who is not particularly knowledgeable about cars in general , I would very much appreciate any advice or comments in relation to the following: Are there any particular models of cars that you would recommend that are cheap, safe and fuel efficienct?

You Yes, all plugs are new and the recommended ones. There was a problem before they were replaced and after - no improvement. They look fine when checked though - i.e. no soot etc.
  • 2008 Ford Focus - Undetectable Intermittent Starting Problem 16 Mar 2017 (Forum)
The current process I’m using to find the problem is to investigate all sensors and their circuits that have anything to do with fuel injection, the only problem is that I do not have a large knowledge base when it comes to cars. I am wondering if you guys can help me and please be so kind to tell me what sensors you know to affect fuel injection and if you’ve ever heard of such a problem before or know of anything that could help.
  • Toyota Yaris - Toyota Listers Nuneaton 16 Jun 2015 (Forum)
The registration number of the vehicle was also not recognized by the system and the operator sent us back to the dealer. In the Supagard package was included a fuel tank, car mats and the interior and exterior of the car treated with special solution to protect paint against wear and tear and textile against stains. The car was taken without being valeted, it had spider web all over the windows and mirrors and dust inside and spots all over.
  • HJ; answers - repairs 11 Sep 2012 (Forum)
I want to know why the repairers did not spot this and I also know that they did not drive the vehicle on a test run because I left it with with them with no fuel and that they did not put any fuel in. What redress do I have against the repairers? I feel that they have endangered my life through negligence. Would I be able to sue and if so, how should I go about this?
  • VW Passat estate tdi 57 plate - Tyre conundrum 10 Aug 2012 (Forum)
I was puzzled as what was wrong and how it had been corrected but thought no more of it. Within the same week I had 4 new fuel injectors replaced under the VW safety recall and ever since then my fuel economy has worsened by nearly 10%. I have never known whether this is a tyre problem or the new injectors. Fast forward to this week and the car has just had service and on the paperwork they give tyre tread wear for all 4 tyres for outside, inner and middle.
  • Suzuki Grand Vitara - Grand Vitara 1.9ddis buying advice - dpf concerns 15 Aug 2011 (Forum)
The car will be used primarily by my wife for commuting 10 miles each way to work on a mixture of village and 40 -60mph bypasses and the expected fuel saving against the focus we will also be doing 1hour long journeys at weekends on mixed roads again but with opportunity to run at higher revs, also during the week/every 200miles or so we could run at higher revs without going too far out of our way.
  • Nissan Almera or Toyota Prius? Any help? 26 Jul 2010 (Forum)
I am between a 2004 Nissan Almera 1.8 (gasoline powered 4 speed automatic with 55.000 Km on the clock and price 6.300 Euros) and a Toyota Prius (any year between 2005 and 2009 and price from 12.000 to 15.000 Euros). The Almera has very good reliability ratings, but,on the other hand,is quite expensive on fuel (i think that this is the case, since it is a 4 speed torque converter automatic fitted to a 1.8 liter engine) and tax (here...in Greece... gasoline has a price of -approximately-1.50 Euros per liter (and it is predicted that its price will rise even more),the annual tax of a 2004 conventional car with a 1.8 liter engine is 252 Euros (this is the data for 2010,as nobody knows what its going to happen the following year...)
  • 1999 R reg Chrysler Grand Voyager 3.3 LE LPG - Chrysler Grand Voyager 3.3 LE LPG help wanted... 10 Jun 2010 (Forum)
Now if  I try to start the engine it turns over eventually if you give it loads of gas but cuts out after a few seconds as if it not getting any fuel.  I called the RAC guy to see if he could locate the problem and he chcked the spark plugs and fuel injectors and said that they werent getting a pulse which is why it was misfiring so badly.  His overall diagnosis was that it must be the ECU that is failing because strangely the engine management light was not identifying the problems with the engine.
  • New car - old car? £7,000 down the drain? 29 Jan 2010 (Forum)
That leaves a small petrol motor - but the constant cold running - of typically a few hundred yards - half an hour parked - means almost double the fuel used. That would be around £2,800 extra on fuel over the next 8yrs + £6,000 cash to acquire a new Panda petrol (+PX) Assuming in another 8yrs the new Panda itself will then be worth around £1,000/£1,500 (as is the Punto today) then it looks like it would cost just under £9,000 extra - as opposed to keeping the current Punto another 8yrs.
  • Budget 4x4 advice anyone? 12 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Given that I'm going to be in the middle of nowhere, often at night on my own, it can't break down *ever* and needs to be from a manufacturer with lots of dealerships as I'm probably going to need the occasional thing far from home. I'm not worried about fuel economy or image, this is going to be a work tool and the fuel will be deductible. I'm also not worried about leather seats, air con, CD players, navigation or any mod cons, in many respects the less to go wrong the better.
  • What to buy 19 Dec 2007 (Forum)
I don't mind paying for a good extra 2 year warranty (this is a car I'll expect to keep for 3 years, maybe more) Fuel choice isn't important. I am leaning towards a Fabia or Octavia diesel, but a petrol car would be fine if it returns over 50mpg with my gentle driving. Depreciation is a factor of course. My 306 cost £5k, it's worth almost nothing now but I've had it for 5 years. £1k/year is perfectly acceptable but I'm not interested in a £10k car that's going to lose £6k in 3 years and 60,000 more miles.
