Thrashed from cold 15 Nov 2002 (Forum)
Every evening when I leave work, the drill is the same. 2 minutes wait (maximum) to get onto the main road, 400 yards and a roundabout, then down a slip road onto a very busy dual carriageway where the traffic flow is around 80 mph. So to avoid being rear ended, I'm running my Audi straight up to 80 (approx 3750 rpm) with the engine almost stone cold. I can't help thinking this is bad for it - can anyone reassure me? Cavalier 1.6L cold start problems 9 Nov 2002 (Forum)
Then at about 1 mile in to the journey, just as the engine temp needle is beginning to rise, the car begins to lose revs and power, and starts stalling. If allowed to stand for a minute or two, the car then starts fine and continues to rev OK and runs trouble free. That is, until the next time it is started from cold. Any ideas on what it might be and how to cure it? -
306 tick over problems 26 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Good afternoon All, I have a 306 2.0Ltr 8 valve, it’s a 1994 model on a M, about 65K Miles. It’s regularly serviced and seemed to be running fine. However today it’s developed an annoying fault. Basically the car starts fine, but it’s tick over is a little low (600 rmp, normally about 900 rmp). If you blip the throttle it revs fine, however as it returns to tick over it stalls. -
Melting Fiat 25 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Does anyone know if this is a common fault and when I get the new switch fitted if I replace the 6w bulbs with a lower wattage will the system run 'cooler'? thanks -
Punto GT Head gasket? 22 Oct 2002 (Forum)
-Idling/running problems(during idling the engine sometimes hunts between 300-1200rpm especially when cold.Whilst trying to drive in this condition acceleration feels jumpy to say the least.) -Gradual loss of coolant. -
Carb Balancing 8 Oct 2002 (Forum)
I've used a set of vac gauges to set my carbs up this weekend. It runs worse now they are evenly balanced than before. I think the gauges are accurate because I swapped them over and got the same reading from each cylinder using the same gauge. A mate says he's found this too using my gauges and simply adjusts his carbs by ear after using the gauges to get close. -
Audi A6 2.5TDi 6 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Do I have any recourse against Audi (not fit for the purpose for which it was intended etc). If not what other options do I have? The car's fine otherwise just run in,in fact! -
Astra Radio 16 Sep 2002 (Forum)
Bought it without a stereo (previous owner had removed it) and have got my hands on a Vauxhall Grundig SC303 which needs to run off the in-dash display. Dont think the previous stereo used the display as various coloured wires in the loom are taped up. Anyone know what colour of wires go into the top connector on the back? -

Hot Air? 8 Sep 2002 (Forum)
Did anyone here an item on radio 2 yesterday about a car that has been developed (In France, I think) that runs on compressed air? Apparantly it can refilled by the air compressor at any garage in two minutes and has a range of 150 miles with a top speed of 69 mph. It can also be filled overnight on a domestic compressor of the type used to inflate air-beds, etc. -
Tyres in the wet 26 Jul 2002 (Forum)
However whe it's wet they are an absoloute knightmare, The car tends to just nose through corners and rounabouts. Is it possible to get better performance out of the tyres by running them at a lower pressure. (I saw this mentioned somewhere else on the site) Ross -
European Tour 20 Jul 2002 (Forum)
He does not have any specific route or timetable. If he leaves with a full years MOT and Tax, what does he have to do when they run out ? Does he have to have the "MOT" done where ever he happens to be at the time, and register the vehicle in that country (although he will not have a fixed address there), or is he expected to return to this country every year just to test and tax it ? -
alfa romeo spider bigend part 2. 22 Jun 2002 (Forum)
Main agent always used Synthetic oil at service &always carried out at correct milage Agent agreed that car had been driven & treated in correct way' "But when warranty runs out, there is no Comeback on manufacturer"?? I just can't understand that when you buy anew car-after 4 years & 41k miles it fails probably due to some inherant fault? AlfaMarie -
Spanish Motoring Costs Pt II 24 Apr 2002 (Forum)
Only problem HJ's advice S(sell here & buy there), is the small one of financing, on a meagre pension, the shortfall between a new Focus/Seat/etc & a nearly (by then) 3yo 'Belgian' Focus :-( If I do sell & buy, I'll have to trade-down - any recommendations, bearing in mind the likely value of the Focus - well cared-for, but f. high mileage(16k/yr)? Presumably Seat wd be first choice? Also, any comments on Spanish running costs - insurance, servicing, spares, road tax, etc, would be welcomed. -
Honda Prelude 20 Apr 2002 (Forum)
One of my customers has just collected his £250 14yr old car from a service. He has chosen to run for this for a couple of years but now choses to have something a bit better....a lot better in fact. He is looking at the cash purchase of a two year old Honda Prelude, one of the last. I know little of these apart from the comments in the car-by car breakdown on this site. -
Fading Diesel 8 Apr 2002 (Forum)
BX diesel; engine difficult to start, may then run for a while before fading out. Found a leak in the fuel system (at it's most inaccessible point at the back of the engine) large enough to produce a weedy squirt of diesel when the primer pump is operated. -
5 series or A6 2 Mar 2002 (Forum)
I don't do a lot of miles (around 10,000 a year), hence I think I will be quite satisfied with petrol engined cars, ie. 520/523 and 1.8T respectively. Anyone out there who has had experience with both cars? How are the running costs like? What should I look out for? Is one significantly better than the other? Any advice most welcome. -
Consultants? 1 Feb 2002 (Forum)
He reckons the govt. should be charging for every mile travelled and that improving/widening roads would be doing motorists no favours in the long run. Theory probably has some merit but you gotta be suspious of these alleged experts as I'm sure these people will be in a position to absorb any extra costs as they drive past the plebs waiting for a mythical bus/train to turn up. -
Driven last night 26 Jan 2002 (Forum)
One of the better shows i thought but WHATS the point of a drag race between three cars , too many factors determine the winner, just a couple 1/ the driver 2/ a poor start 3/the milage (ie run in) I thought the test of passing the fixed speed lorry much more informative of a cars performance? Why do motoring programmes seam to think we what to see flat out driving round race tracks? -
Air Con - is it worth it? 2 Nov 2001 (Forum)
When I choose my next car, it likely to be 3 to 4 years old ex fleet and not more than £5K. I intend running the car for another 3 years (30K). For the first time many of the cars falling into this category have air con. I can?t help wondering if air con may be more trouble and expense than it?s worth in these circumstances.
