Fading Diesel - Simon Butterworth
BX diesel; engine difficult to start, may then run for a while before fading out. Found a leak in the fuel system (at it's most inaccessible point at the back of the engine) large enough to produce a weedy squirt of diesel when the primer pump is operated. Clearly air can get in, which would account for rough starting. Is this really likely to be enough to fade it out even at 2-3000rpm or am I looking for something else as well?.

And it was only in the garage for 144k cambelt and MoT (passed, no mention of a fuel leak) on Thursday.

Hi Simon - With a leak in the fuel pipe you're lucky it starts at all. Get the pipe changed, the fuel system bled of air and the engine will be back on form. The pipe may be brittle and it may have been pushed around in changing the cambelt, but you'll have a hell of a job proving it.

JohnD gives the most likely answer. Many of the BX/ older Xantia fuel lines are going brittle with age now. Getting the timing belt cover off can be a fiddle and cause you to catch all sorts of things in the process.

No point in looking any further until this leak is sorted.

Tried to fettle it myself but cusses, bruises and contact dermatitis from a sleeve full of diesel convinced me it was a job for professionals. Nat Breakdown/Green Flag/Direct Line seemed pretty clueless in spite of hints but flat backed it to the local PSA specialist.

£40 plus parts and VAT to replace both supply and return fuel lines (the latter looked dodgy as well).
