  • Nissan Almera (2000 - 2006) - 03 1.5 Wheel Balancing 10 Dec 2009 (Forum)
Should I take the car back to the garage that done the balancing or will there be an underlying problem? The car drive, brakes, corners etc all fine with no noises or clunks so I dont think there is any probs with my steering or suspension. Cheers Flatcap
  • Ford C-MAX (2003 - 2010) - 04 1.8 Electric handbrake 13 Oct 2009 (Forum)
My wife can't cope with the automatic handbrake on her C Max Ghia and has difficulty using it for hill starts She wants to change the car even though she loves everything except the handbrake. Does anybody know if I can change the brake to manual by disconnecting the electrics, fitting a "normal" handbrake lever and changing the centre console -hopefully from the dismantlers. It seems a better option than changing a very good car.
  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - The best alloy wheel size 7 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Is there a noticable difference in noise and comfort levels between the above wheel sizes for any given tyre ? Which tyres have you found to be worse or best for noise, comfort, wear, handling, braking in wet & dry ? Thanks.
  • Mitsubishi Colt 5-door (2004 - ) - non-dealer servicing 1 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Will a non-Mitsu garage know what needs doing? The dealer said this service was a 'big one' and IIRC mentioned that the brake fluid would be changed amongst other things - no idea whether that's normal or not. BTW more distant dealer wanted £322. Car is actually a CZ2 1.3 3dr, but that isn't listed in the Make/Model dropdown.
  • Chrysler Voyager (1997 - 2001) - 1998 3.3l v6 auto - Cruise Control 24 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Now "cruise" light comes on when button pressed then fades away after a few seconds, unable to set speed . Going to try replacing the brake switch but if that doesnt work any other suggestions.

  • Vauxhall Combo van (2002 - ) - 03 1.7 Diesel - power loss going uphill 27 May 2009 (Forum)
Drives fine and will go 70+mph but slows to about 60 when going uphill, you can sometimes physically feel it-as if the brakes have been dabbed then released again. As soon as the hill levels out it picks up speed like normal again. Any ideas? its a real pain. Cheers Dan
  • BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 03 3.0 Views on wheel spacers 20 May 2009 (Forum)
I'm a bit concerned that doing so will increase the load on the bearings and also have an adverse effect on handling/braking etc. Any views/advice appreciated.
  • Mazda MX5 (1998-2005) - 00 1.8 Rythmic rubbing sound at wheel speed 2 May 2009 (Forum)
It is most noticable at about 40mph and becomes one continuous noise at about 60mph. I have stripped each brake down and there is nothing obvious there. I thought I had tracked it down to the Diff. but I have now fitted two 2`nd hand units and the noise persists. Has anyone had a similar experience or any ideas.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 1999 1.9 total headlight failure 26 Jan 2009 (Forum)
my son was about to head out last night with our peugeot 306 1900diesel meridian, the car started as normal but neither headlights, sidelights or rear lights worked, not even the headlight flasher worked. The indicators, work (same stalk) the brake and reversing lights work. The hazards work. I have checked the fuses, all ok, has anyone any idea where else to look? Could an earth fault cause this total failure? cheers hogshill
  • Part Time Mechanics courses 26 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Hi, Just wondering does anywhere in the UK (specifically the west midlands) do part time car mechanics courses? I'd like to learn fully how to fully maintain my car (Leon Cupra), including areas like the brakes and such, but looking around the local colleges, they only appear to have full time courses for kids who have just come out of school. Any tips or hints as to where to look? I'm getting a little fed up of relying on garages, as well as wanting to get my hands dirty.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 99 1.6 Indicating Triggers Main Beam 2 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Thanks for all your help with my brake disc query, now I have another query! My friend also owns a Ford Focus and everytime time he uses the indicator the main beam comes on which dazzles other drivers. He then has problems switching the main beam off having to click it repeatedly or indicate again to switch it off Any ideas what is causing this and the cost of a potential fix?
  • BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 2005 3.0 annoying squeak 1 Sep 2008 (Forum)
it seems to happen when the car is doing about 20mls per hour but not at faster speeds i had the car serviced at a main bmw dealer and they had the wheels off and they could not see a problem (so i take it its not the brakes)
  • Nissan Almera (2000 - 2006) - Pain dealer servicing 5 Jul 2008 (Forum)
I had a "minor" service carried out on my car yesterday and they also replaced the rear brake pads ... cost £236 and they also stuck in a fuel additive £12.50 which to me is 2 bags of coal ... They didn't ask me if I had any running probs and Almera's are not known for injector fouling + I only had less than half a tank of juice to which to add the ad.
  • Renault Clio II (1998 - 2001) - 2000 1.2 power steering rack 3 Jun 2008 (Forum)
one of the high pressure pipes is leaking on our car (the pipe comes out of the top of the rack nearest to the left hand side and goes into the pinion) ,although these pipes seperate from the rack i have been told by the dealer they are part of the rack at a cost of over 300 pounds .is it possible to get new pipes made up to fit as you would buy brake pipes, or is there some reason for them being part of the rack assembly.
  • Renault - damage to me van 3 May 2008 (Forum)
On the 29th of last month I took my Renault trafic (based) 2.5 diesel motorhome to local garage for MOT in the process they damaged it -to which they admitted liability- however they subsequently failed van on emissions and brake stop light. I left it to be seen to, but although I got MOT certificate-they wont give me the bill until I GET ESTIMATE for repair- my friends tell me that this maybe because they (garage) want to load my bill up- what are my options...any advise please. thanx
  • Tyre wear: How often do you change your boots? 11 Sep 2007 (Forum)
They've now done 26,000 miles since they were put on and look good for another few miles yet. I should say that I'm not a crawler when driving but neither do I accelerate or brake hard.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 1999 - Excessive rust underneath 19 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Whilst carrying out the annual service on my 1999 Focus, I was amazed at the amount of rust. This is heavy flaking rust on most of the rear suspension and 'sub-frame' bits as well as the brake drums. The body itself is fine, and the car has always had an under-body hose down after each winter. Does anyone know if this is normal, and whether it could be a safety issue. The car has always passed the MOT without comment, the last in January.

  • Golf Mk 4 TDPDI steering judder 30 Jul 2007 (Forum)
For the past year I have noticed intermittent steering vibration/judder which can happen at any speed but more likely when either braking or accelerating. Sometimes it just comes on all of a sudden and can be quite alarming. During the last year I have had all new tyres and the wheels balanced three times but the problem is still there.
