  • Peugeot / Citroen HPi engine issues 12 Oct 2004 (Forum)
My 406 is fitted with this (2.0L petrol, low emissions) engine but it hasn't run properly all this year. The dealer says there's a problem with the unit that advances the valve timing (apparently it has VVT just like the Honda's). They change the unit but within a few wks it plays up again - misfire/hesitation under load.

  • Golf Mk2 water leak mystery 23 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Anyone with any clue? It's really starting to bug me now as this has been going on for ages now. The car runs like a dream and this is the only problem I have with it.
  • VW Golf MK2 Engine mounts 23 May 2004 (Forum)
So far I have changed all the bushes on the wish bones, had new tyres fitted, had the tracking and camber adjusted, and I am running out of ideas!! The car also recently passed its MOT. The only think that I can think of is could faulty engine mounts cause torque steer? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!! Regards, Peter
  • Reviving a dormant Capri 2.8i 14 May 2004 (Forum)
Now and again I think I should really do something about it, but I don't getroundtuit and the car continues to rest in the dry and dark, free of rust, but completely inactive. I suppose I am somewhat intimidated by the prospect of getting it running myself; I'm not technically clueless, but I'm no expert. Am I being too timid or is reviving such a vehicle really a job for the specialist?
  • Pug 306 fuel filter 11 May 2004 (Forum)
Everything ok except the rubber bulb primer that is used to pump fuel into the new filter is always soft.by that i mean it takes about three or four pumps to firm up even after the car has been run, this isnt a problem as it always starts after being left over night, but i was curious as to why the bulb now goes soft as before it used to stay firm?
  • High mileage car - what to check ? 7 May 2004 (Forum)
Have a 3.5 year old old shape Corolla, now at 125K, and have just spent £1K on a gearbox rebuild ..... so I'm going to amortise my investment and run the thing for a while longer ! What else, apart from the normal service items (oil, filters, tyres, etc) should I specifically pay attention to on a high mileage car ?
  • Honda Civic Temp Gauge 22 Apr 2004 (Forum)
As the engine warms up the needle rises to just above the c for cold mark but then falls again to the bottom (as if the engine was not running) and then back up to above c then back down etc etc.. However there is plenty of hot air coming from the blowers even when the needle is at the bottom. I am right thinking the cause is down to a broken thermostat or could it possibly be a faulty gauge?
  • Stripped spark plug threads.Cavalier Mk3 8 Apr 2004 (Forum)
Cavalier 3. Runs ok but I think one of the spark plug threads is crossed or stripped (not by me!), it\'s fairly tight but feels as if it\'d turn forever. I\'ve read an archive on helicoiling but I think that thread-locking cement might do the trick.
  • diesel/engine oil as rust prevention 22 Mar 2004 (Forum)
anyone try this?? i run a very clean mk2 golf ,and id like to keep it that way..i feel waxoil has limited suceess where a little rust has started in hidden seams etc seeing as diesel /oil mixture is very thin i recone it would seep into seems and hold back the rust im only thinking of using it in the sills and inner arches etc.
  • Chrysler Voyager3.3 Petrol. S Reg.. 2 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Last year when the outside temperature was above 25c. And the vehicle had been running for at least 1 hour the vehicle was apt to cut out completely....very dangerous with steering locking ! After 5-10 mins.the vehicle would start again and perhaps travel for another hour. 2 dealers say they cannot help as nothing appears wrong on the data check.

been driving the wifes mondeo tonight its a 99T 1.8 turbo diesel noticed that the oil light flickers for a few seconds when you go round corners and roundabouts. its never done this before, i checked the oil level and its fine also it had a oil change about 3000 miles ago. the car has done 70000 miles. the engine sounds fine and runs ok with no other problems so i'm worried its about to go bang! anyone with any ideas what it could be? thanks..
  • Subaru. semi or fully syth oil ? 16 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I run a 6 year old non turbo 2.0 litre Subaru with 80k miles.Servicing is done by my local mechanic on a \'labour only\' basis, with myself providing all parts from a motor factors. To date I have used a variety of 10/40 semi-synthetic oils at every change, but in Halfords yesterday was recommended (and bought)their own 5/40 fully synthetic, currently on offer at £15 for 5 litres.

  • Do you HAVE to register a warrantee? 24 Dec 2003 (Forum)
I had a new car stereo for Christmas last year and just one day before the year long manufacturer's guarantee runs out, it has gone wrong! The front wont stay connected to the unit sufficiently enough for it to work, and on the rare occasion that I can get it to stay, one bit of acceleration and it's all quiet again.
  • Mercedes 430 Oxygen Sensor? 3 Dec 2003 (Forum)
I've had it a couple of weeks and the fuel consumption is worse than my previous ML430 (i.e. terrible). It smells like it is running rich all the time and even when fully warmed up the exhaust still smells 'rich' and slighly smoky. I am guessing something could be wrong with the oxygen sensor or the connections. Has anyone had anything similar?
  • Letter in Sunday Times re studs in tyres 2 Dec 2003 (Forum)
If I am wrong and they are now illegal, when did the law change? Which bit of legislation changed it? Also why? It's not as if thousands of people are running around wearing out the road surface prematurely. If the conditions are such that it's a worthwhile investment then you should be allowed to use them. They really do make a difference.
  • Choke ? Vauxhall Astra (Expression) 1.4 25 Nov 2003 (Forum)
I've just bought a Vauxhall Astra (Expression) 1.4 litre hatchback H reg. It has 120,000 miles on the clock. The engine runs really well. However... the automatic choke does not work. When starting the car I need to keep my foot on the accellerator until the engine warms up to stop the engine from cutting out. Has anyone experienced similar problems with the CHOKE not working on Vauxhall's Astra range?
  • Pug 306 Engine cutting out! 8 Nov 2003 (Forum)
It has happened 3 or 4 times now and can happen at anytime even when just driving along the motorway (i.e. not just slowing down for a round about). The car will then not start for about 1 minute (guess it is flooded). After this it will then run fine for the rest of the journey and not cut out anymore. If anyone can help or give a suggestion. thnaks GT
  • Citroen AX poor cold starting 1 Nov 2003 (Forum)
My next door neighbours AX runs perfectly well once hot but has started to take an enernity to start when it\'s cold first thing in the morning. It didn\'t start at all this morning and he had the RAC out. They eventually got it going and told him to take it to a garage.
