any - refer to IT at HJ 13 Jul 2017 (Forum)
When you click on the ''FORUM'' button top right instead of it going straight to the forum it now brings up another box with three possibles, small annoyance granted but we appear to have fixed something that wasn't broken in the first place, car and lorry makers do this regularly, fix what wasn't broken in the first place, ie manual parking brakes, and this being one of the last remaining defence posts of common sense in car matters..... Thankyou. -
Astra/Corsa - Stolen Vauxhall Fronts 18 Oct 2016 (Forum)
I wonder why this is so: Do drivers of these run into things more often than drivers of other models? Is that because they tailgate more, not concentrate, have slow reactions, or do they have poor brakes and/or cheap ditchfnder tyres? Are front bumpers for these exceptionally costly, so worth stealing and are they easier to steal than from other models? Anyone have a theory or knowledge of the real reason? -
Aquaplaning 16 Feb 2016 (Forum)
He remarked that he was passed frequently by cars doing in excess of 70 mph. If the drivers had to brake or change direction they would cause chaos, if not loss of life. Do the driving instructors nowadays teach about aquaplaning ? Does anybody remember the formula to discern what speed is relatively safe in heavy rain ? -
Liability 29 Oct 2015 (Forum)
He didnt stop at the give way and just went as if he was convinced there was nothing coming. I slammed my brakes on, skidded and went into the back of him. Am I right in thinking that this has to be his fault? Many thanks. M -
Old cars! - Do you know any alternatives to copper grease? 6 Jul 2015 (Forum)
Hi, I'm currently in the middle of nowhere in France, and I had to change my brake pads. The calipers are about 17 years old, and therefore pretty corroded. The new pads are binding, so normally I'd put a bit of Copaslip on the lugs to keep them moving, but this being The Sticks, I can't find any anywhere! -
AUDI A3 - MOT 7 Apr 2015 (Forum)
In discussion with the garage I asked if the test was based on the condition of the car NOW or whether the testers projected ahead on the roadworthyness of the vehicle for the next twelve months. The answer is the former-how ridiculous. Two days later i replaced seriously corroded brake discs plus pads-all round and treated myself to four new tyres (two of which were on the margin legality). So-peace of mind! -
Vauxhall Astra G Diesel - engine electronics immobilizer warning light 3 Oct 2014 (Forum)
The engine electronics immobilzer warning light came on this afternoon on my Astra diesel estate. (The yellow light showing a car and a spanner through it). It goes off when I brake to stop at junctions and the car was driving as normal for the 10 miles that it took to get home. Does anyone have any ideas please. It is an 02 reg so an older car but has been very reliable. -
Audi A3 - Tiny rear indicators 27 Sep 2014 (Forum)
One was two cars ahead of me today, and for a while I thought he was just stopping in the middle of the road, and it was only as the cars concertina’d-up that it became apparent to me that the Audi’s indicator was flashing, next to its illuminated brake light. And I also then remembered this wasn’t the first time I’d experienced that with an A3. Crazy. -
Audi A4 - Stop light bulbs keep blowing 14 Sep 2014 (Forum)
When I change the bulb(double fillament) the dashboard indicator continues to display "Stop bulb left side" until I have driven a short distance and used the brakes a couple of times. Audi say there is no difference in the bulbs whether from Ring, Bosch or Hella, but I am baffled why this keeps happening. Can anyone give me an explanation and possible cure? -
ABS - anyone else want to switch it off? 24 Jan 2013 (Forum)
By now many will have experienced the stuttering glide along snowy sideroads when trying to brake. I have driven on snow on many occasions since passing my test in 1967 and my work frequently necessitates driving on minor roads and sidestreets. I think I could stop more quickly before ABS was imposed upon us. -
vw golf mk 6 - dsg 9 Jan 2013 (Forum)
I have a 2012 ,1.4 petrol, 122BHP golf mk 6 DSG 7 speed with 3000 miles. When driving down a steep hill, braking and foot off the accelerator the DSG drops into 3rd or 4th gear and the engine jumps up to 4500 revs, and stays in the lower gear, often for several minutes, or until I accelerate again. even if the speed is 40-50 mph. -

Nissan Micra K11 2001 - Broken drop link: 40 quid quote 16 Feb 2011 (Forum)
Although 40 quid seemed a bit steep, I noticed that they had done a "mini MOT" on the vehicle and tested the alternator, battery, tyres etc. They noticed a defective rear brake light. They also noticed a broken drop link and quoted 39.95 to fix this. * Is this a good price? * Is it unsafe to drive around with a broken drop link? * I suppose this was caused by a pot hole. -
Toyota Auris - Accelerator issues 14 Jan 2011 (Forum)
At first it sounded like a sticking accelerator (popular Toyota issue!), but at the same time the brake pedal went solid and there was a strong 'clutchy' smell. All this happened very quickly and took him a bit by surprise. Does anyone have any experience of similar events or ideas/suggestions as to the problem. -
C180K - Mercedes Benz - Loud Humming Noise 23 Oct 2010 (Forum)
It has 30000miles on the clock and the following items were replaced - oil change, fuel filter, spark plugs and brake fluid. The car came back with a loud humming/howling noise. The dealer is claiming that this noise is caused by a faulty fuel pump but I am aghast as this problem was not there before and it will cost well over 400 pounds to replace. -
Peugeot 406 HDI - warning light 20 Mar 2010 (Forum)
I am happy to fix the bumper etc but it has STOP in big letters on the dash display. I am told this could be because its low on brake fluid but my instinct tells me its more to do with the accident. Can somebody tell me what triggers this STOP message please ? (And hopefully how to cure it.) The airbags are intact. Thanks, Mike -
Why do diesel cars need vacuum pumps? 11 Jan 2010 (Forum)
As I understand it, a petrol engine develops a vacuum on the intake manifold when its running. This vacuum can be tapped and used for other purposes; for example, the braking system. (Have I got this correct? Feel free to correct me if not.) If thats right, why cant diesel engines do the same? I'm sure this will seem shockingly ignorant to many....
