  • Worst new car on sale today... 16 Nov 2005 (Forum)
(Good dealer nr Wigan BTW and cheaper than telephone quote inc brake fluid change). Offered courtesy car which turned out to be Daihatsu Terios Sport. UHGGH. OK it had less that 1000 miles but on the basis of 100 miles of mixed motorway, A road and urban driving I would make the following comments: - No torque anywhere No room for left foot, except under clutch pedal Cheap interior fittings Bouncy!
  • Trade in £ can't be that low surely? 15 Sep 2005 (Forum)
According to Auto Trader with this mileage it is worth approx £700 as a trade-in and according to the What Car? magazine it would be worth £1,200. Can these figures really be right for a 2 1/2 year old car?! Looking on Ebay and a couple of other places privately, Vectra's similar to this sell arround the £5,000 mark.
  • First time buyer - advice please 28 Jul 2005 (Forum)
Hi Following the breakdown of my marriage with the ex getting custody of the car, I now find myself looking for a car, but not knowing where to start. I'm not bothered about makes, but there's a few things which may narrow the search a little. I've £5000 to spend Safe - got two kids large boot easy to maintain - not mechanically minded!
  • Focus CMAX Fuel Consumption 5 Jul 2005 (Forum)
Just bought a Focus CMAX 2.0 TDCi Zetec, 8k, one year old from Ford Direct via a Ford dealer. I've had it for about a week and the fuel consumption is about 30mpg on average for 50% town/50% motorway. Is this right? The specs for this car on the Ford website state 50.4mpg, should I expect my car to do this?
  • missed service 3 Apr 2005 (Forum)
I have just bought a car which is 20 months old. It only has 7000 on the clock and is in excellent condition to look at.Problem is I did not look at the service record until 2 days later whereupon I saw that there is no year 1 service stamp.
  • Renault Scenic or Saab 93??? 5 Nov 2004 (Forum)
As you are all car buffs you can understand the Saab is a much better car but is it worth spending an extra £110.00 a month on? I can just afford the Saab. As far as the lease terms go I would have to pay three months 1st payment for each contract. eg: Renault 3 + 11 & Saab 3 + 23.
  • A "good" unmarked police car 6 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Both times I had seen it, it had pulled battered old Transits over. Amongst their "captures" so far are apparently 4 drivers who were tailgating them, 2 drivers who used the hard shoulder to beat traffic queues, and 6 drivers who were middle lane hogging.
  • Big Decent Estate 4 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Bare in mind when I come back the car will more than likely be sold so just a holiday car really!
  • Hyundai Coupe Vibration 26 Aug 2004 (Forum)
This vibration seems to start at the front of the car and feels like it travels through underneath the seats towards the back of the car. Anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this? NIGEL
  • Insurance Dispute 18 Aug 2004 (Forum)
A friend of mine is in dispute with a major insurance company regarding a claim. The car is a Toyota Starlet 1.31 SR ( T Plate 99 ) which is the sport rally version of the Starlet and with the P at then end of the Chassis number denotes that the car was prepared at the point of entry and 15” Speedline Alloys fitted prior to delivery.
  • Shiny Happy Traffic Wardens... 1 Aug 2004 (Forum)
They exist!! Or, at least, one does. Seen in the vicinity of good old leafy Orpington, Friday around 4pm. Mindful of the horror stories about wardens jumping out from behind lampposts as one tries to obtain one's parking ticket, I was a little worried when, the second I had finished parking, one was ticketing the car next to mine.
  • Help HJ -Fiesta Rust :( 15 Dec 2002 (Forum)
HJ - I noticed in the car by car a little while ago that you mentioned rust on the weatherseal on the A-pillar of the 99 - 02 Fiestas. Well, my 6 month old example appears to be suffering from this, as well as a problem at the very top corner of the driver's door where it must be closing against the rear passenger door, hence chipping the paint, leading to a nice little spot of rust (fortunately invisible when the door is shut so far).
  • Audi A6 Avante paint problem 25 Apr 2002 (Forum)
The bubbles are very small, about the size of a pinhead and very hard to spot unless you are looking for them. We have contacted the previous owner, who confirmed the mileage and service history and that the car has never had an accident, or any body or paintwork repairs. When asked, he said he had not noticed the bubbles, but usually jet washed the car, not handwashed it. (the bubbles were first noticed as the son handwashed the car) Has anyone out there had a similar problem?
  • Rover 214i P reg any good? 20 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Hi, Ive read the very useful Car by car breakdown but would like to canvas a few opinions... Ive been offerd a tidy P reg Rover 214i with the basic 1.4 8-valve K series engine. Its done about 50kmiles and its most recent owner was an elderly gent who won't have driven it hard.
  • Enlightenment please. 27 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Searching the various car lots last week end for a car for daughter and armed with Parkers (March 2002) I noticed that virtually all on display were marked up some £500 - £750 above that shown for A.1 condition. Asking the HJ question, immediately that sum was reduced and down to the top price shown in the Book.
  • legal protection on insurance 19 Feb 2002 (Forum)
The Back Room, An old dear reversed into my car some time ago - she was reversing in road works to let white van man come through. I had legal protection, so I put it their hands. The front of my plastic clad Rover was damaged - a cracked bumper, bent wing and broken light I was without a car for two weeks; I had out of pocket expenses too.
  • Simple but perplexing!! 4 Jul 2001 (Forum)
What is the best way to wash a car? I've just invested my hard earned in my first self-financed car which, as you'd expect coming from a main dealer, was very shiny indeed!! Obviously I want to try and keep it looking like this for as long as I can.
  • Mileages and misconceptions? 25 Sep 2006 (Forum)
One group of people tend to like buying their vehicle new, or nearly new, and then they get rid of the car before it starts to cost any cash (I?m thinking of a friend who is getting rid of his Leon Cupra at 60k because he doesn?t want an unreliable car). The other group prefer to buy old and cheap, and get the maximum use out of the car for minimum money.
  • Infiniti Q30 - Part Availability Potentially writing car off 4 Aug 2025 (Forum)
What obligation does the car dealer have to provide a courtesy car until repair is done? What obligation do they have to offer a re-fund / buy back (minus the 6 months of ownership)? Garage have stated that they wont fit 2nd hand parts as the warranty won't cover this I have found the original manufacturer of the pumps (based in Europe) but they have a minimum order quantity (quantity tbc) but feel this could be a dead end and its more than likely the place Nissan but them from when there is enough demand  This is potentially writing off a 8 year old car with less than 50,000 miles, we could at our cost take it to another garage and fit a 2nd hand unit (no guarantee it will work) plus this invalidates the existing warranty and leaves her open to this fiasco if the unit fails again
  • Audi 100 1989 - Why older cars have big fuel tank than the new? 17 Nov 2023 (Forum)
It was an amazing trip from my home to Scotland when we went on holiday in 1997 my father only filled up once in a week! Now I see most modern cars have very limited fuel tanks than what I see back in the 1990s. My car is a Toyota Argyo 1.0 vtti 2017 it has 35 litres with a range under 280 miles is pathiec. Is that something to do with emissions to reduce the weight of the cars to downsize the tank?
