  • Honda CRV - How Much Is Considered To Be 'High Mileage' 9 Mar 2017 (Forum)
Obviously I'll be paying more from a dealer but hopefully it will be worth it for the 'peace of mind' that I'll hopefully be buying a good car. I've seen a few with a full Honda Service History which I guess is as good as it gets but would there be any limits to an acceptable mileage on cars from 6yrs old and less? I'm thinking that the engines should still be sound but the rest of the car i.e wheel bearings\clutch etc will also have done the same distance.
  • Hyundai i10 - Incorrect HPI from Autotrader 6 Mar 2017 (Forum)
Hi sorry if I'm going over old information but I need a bit of advice. We bought an i10 second hand in September 2015. The car was advertised by a dealer through Autotrader, so to be safe we did an hpi check with Autotrader, which came back as all clear (we still have a copy).
  • Peugeot 308 - Tensioner/Alternator belt 4 Feb 2017 (Forum)
Got the car back now and seems OK but what do I know as I'm not car engine savvy. However having to renew alternator belts/tensioners on a car a little over a year old seems a little worrying. Maybe I'm just paranoid but anyone have any thoughts or advice as to whether this is not uncommon much appreciated as I still have a week or two left to return car for replacement if justified.
  • Wiper blades 18 May 2016 (Forum)
Now, to explain, "on the split" means the mechanic gives the edge of the blade a gentle tug and when it is a couple of years old it splits, so when you pick up the car you have to replace the wretched things. Pat tells me that these days Halfords find it difficult to match up wiper blades for many modern cars as the manufacturers specify odd fitments that mean that only the dealers stock them.
  • Passat/Golf/Octavia - Used car for around £3k 24 Feb 2015 (Forum)
It's meant to be great, but when breaks down it costs a fortune to repair/replace. Then there is a golf with under 50k with SDI, which are great for reliability, but it's 8 years old, and I hear not driving diesels can be as bad. I need someone with experience to advice me on next buy. I chose VAGs also because their resale value is quite good. I need a car to serve me for approx. 3 years and then sell.
  • Mercedes-Benz C-Class - Build quality (rust) on the Mercedes C class Range 5 Aug 2014 (Forum)
Having recently bought a late 2001 (november) 51plate Mercedes C class estate, I am suprised of how much rust is appearing on the car, I bought it because of the space, history, and quality of the car itself, That and it being in an unusual dark graphite metalic colour (which i like very much), BUT being over ten years old, i didnt expect a mint car for under a grand.
  • ESTATE CAR 2009 ONWARDS - Stuck with decision. 10 Apr 2014 (Forum)
I am in need of some feedback if there are any owners or input. I have £7500k to buy used car that has to tick following boxes. ESTATE or MPV type - 3 kids and 3 large dogs - Economy good as motorway miles and school run too - upto 5yrs old but pref within 4 - comfy, reasonable mileage (but what is reasonable on a DIESEL or PETROL?)

  • Nissan Terrano II - REFUND for 2nd hand car + cost of returning it 24 Feb 2013 (Forum)
To me it sounds alot but I've used the same garage for many years and they've always been very fair, so I have to trust them. I have two questions:- 1)  I've not even owned the car for 7 days yet, so is the garage legally bound to refund my £4000 ? 2)  The car is currently 80 miles away from the seller's garage. Who is responsible for footing the bill to return the vehicle ?
  • Vauxhall Vectra C - Who knows about Vauxhalls,, 9 Jan 2013 (Forum)
Its hard enough getting her to say goodbye to the old KA as it was her first car let alone if it turns out to be crap.
  • Peugeot 306 - Peugeot 306 - No Spark 4 Sep 2012 (Forum)
Hi, I bought a 1999 Peugeot 306 1.4 as a non runner, with a suspected ECU fault.  A new ECU had been put on the car, the crank sensor changed but the car still wouldn't start.  The old ECU has been put back on the car.   It turns over, I believe it to be getting fuel, but it doesn't smell flooded, you can hear the fuel pump when the ignition is switched on.
  • Pavement parking and threatening behaviour! 18 Jul 2012 (Forum)
Rather scary incident on the school run today. A car with a blue disabled badge was parked with 2 wheels on the pavement right outside school in the restricted area and as I squeezed past on foot I clipped the wing mirror. As I approached my house just a 100 yards around the corner the car drove up and the driver, a gentleman in his late 50's, got out shouting abuse and pushing me for bashing into his car.
  • renault clio '03 1.2 16v - clio '03 idling issue throttle - worth fixing? 21 Nov 2011 (Forum)
I dont wnat to put money into numerous repair/repairs instead of calling it quits with the car and putting the money into a replacement car? THe car is 8yrs old now. By the way i have noticed that there is oil soaked in the air filter. Is this related to the throttle body issue or  a seperate  issue again..
  • Renault Scenic v Kia Carens - Which one is the better buy 28 Apr 2010 (Forum)
2005 54 Reg RENAULT Scenic 1.5 Dci Dynamique v 2006 06 Kia Carens 2.0 CRDi LE Any help on this one would be greatly received! I am a mum of 2 (one two year old and a new born) and I need to purchase a car. I have a budget of £5000 and so far have only found two cars that seem to fit the criteria of being able to fit 2 car seats in the back with space between them and also have a large enough boot to haul around all the bits I need - mainly the double buggy, that fall within my price range - although today I was offered a Zafira with only 30,000 on the clock for £5,000 (1.6 petrol on 54 plate) The Renault has 60,000 on the clock and is £3000 and the Kia has 41,000 on the clock and is £5,300.
  • How much have you spent on motoring over the years 4 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I read that drivers pay an average of 3k per year so again roughly avarage. The car figure is total expenditure out. The first 4 cars I sold for almost as much as I bought them and result was only £25 pound spent in the first 3 years. The average age of each car at purchase is 11 years old.
  • What truly odd cars can you remember seeing? 22 Jan 2010 (Forum)
The car wasn't customised in any other way, just a standard Rapier front on a normal Corsair body. Another oddity was a double-ended Austin A30 in Cornwall - like two front halved welded back-to-back, so if you followed it, it looked like it was reversing!
  • The meaning of luxury 3 Nov 2009 (Forum)
The cousin seems to me a rough driver and a bit of a mimser, but he is a mechanical engineer by training although now a software man (and good at it too). However I was very impressed by the way that car oiled over the cobbles and speedbumps, a different world from anything else I've been in for years. I haven't driven that car enough to know what it's like over the bumps when you try to hurry. That can catch soft supensions out, but it doesn't always especially if the driver knows the car and the bumps.
  • Fun car for about £6k 11 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Throuigh surrendering a no-longer-needed insurance policy, I'll soon be lucky enough to have some money to spend on a 'fun car'. I want to put the majority of it aside (I'm a chartered accountant after all!) but about £6k would be a reasonable amount to spend leaving a bit more for insurance (this will be a low-mileage car in addition to the Golf estate, so I'll need a new policy).
  • Honda Accord UK (2008 - ) - New Honda Accord. 9 Dec 2008 (Forum)
I was interested in the new Citroen C5 for my next car, but the Honda Accord is much better. I am genuine about this message, as my present car is excellent, but it is old and has very big milleage. The garrage warned me that I may have problems in 6 weeks or 6 months.Something connected to the gearbox is getting warn.
  • Nissan Qashqai (2007 - ) - DPFs again 26 Sep 2008 (Forum)
A colleague has a year-old car that yesterday lit up the DPF light. Colleague looked in handbook, which apparently says "you must drive at 50mph" but doesn't specify any duration (put yourself in the mind of a non-technical person here).
