EGR valve - Vauxhall Astra 13 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Being an elderly woman my MIL is very worried the car will break down again (she also often has her disabled mother in the car). The questions are: what exactly happened to cause the breakdown and should she just get the EGR changed (presumably the labour would be minimal but how much would the part cost)? -
Serious bluetooth obsolescence issue 25 Jan 2006 (Forum)
When he asked for a list of phones compatible with his chassis every one is an old model and no longer available. Jaguar are to install the latest bluetooth chassis FOC, but beware that if you are considering bluetooth as part of a new car it may only be useful for the life of your current phone. -
Another problem with me Merc 20 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I've also driven other C Class's which seem much more nimble than mine. I know the engine in mine is probably a heavy old lump but I've checked the fluid level, had new tyres fitted, a 4 wheel alignment at the main dealers and experimented with tyre pressures to no avail. The dealer has checked the car over, can't find any obvious faults and says that some cars will steer heavier than others and, that a possible solution may be a new steering rack. -
3 Fords, but which one? 25 Dec 2005 (Forum)
With January sales impending, and the Celica playing up (yes - a Toyota that's broke!) Mum's beginning to get to the idea of a newer car. Choices? Well with the fun handled by the Celica (which she may keep or replace with an MR2) she's after a commuting car - and one that can handle well (back-roads abound) and one that's economical, and with their new place in Spain, one with a huge boot. -
Recommendation for working vehicle? 23 Nov 2005 (Forum)
I would like suggestions for [cheap £1-2k] alternatives. I am currently considering a transit as the most likely, followed by a 4x4 or other tow car + trailer. A 4x4 would help in getting up/ down the steep hill in poor weather but is likely to be more expensive to buy and run than a transit or other car. All comments or suggestions welcome please! -

Punto 1995 diesel MOT failure 21 Aug 2005 (Forum)
She took it to a major chain of tyre/exhaust specialists, who fitted 2 new bulbs and told her the fuses must have blown. Can this be one of the few cars which has arrived with 1 fault and left with 2. I know bulbs can be confusing, but how can you make a mistake (5w 2 contact fitted instead of 5W single contact) when you have the old ones as patterns AND one of them worked when you arrived? -
french flair vs japanese reliability 10 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Peugeots are cheaper to service with cheaper spare costs and with lots of people saying they are reliable. The reliability statistics shows that Toyota beats Peugeot but with a 4 year old car with 70-80k miles, simply from a total running cost, which makes more sense? The Avensis seems well built if a little boring, the 306 not so well built and slightly interesting. Help! -
Golf MK4 Timing belt change 26 Jan 2005 (Forum)
My Mum has a Mark 4 VW Golf 1.4i the car has just passed 4 years old and has 46000 miles on the clock. The engine is still on its orginal timing belt I am wonder at what point it is recommended the belt is changed? Speaking to VW they say they check the condition of the belt when it is serviced and recommend changing when they think its needed - I am not convinced My aunt had the belt snap on her Golf (full VW main dealer history)causing major (and expensive) engine damage. -
Exhaust Mk2 Golf GTI 31 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Hi all The rear silencer on my Mk2 GTI has started to get a little noisy, and so I'm about to replace it. I've always taken my car into exhaust centres when things like this come up, but the prices are beyond a joke - £100 or more just for the rear silencer. It used to be around £30 for my old Nova. I've never changed an exhaust myself before, but seeing as the rear silencer can be reached without getting the car up in the air I thought I'd try it. -
12.5K to spend! 28 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Ladies & Gentlemen I am in somewhat of a dilemna with which I would like your help. I am about to change my car and have a ready buyer for my existsing car so no trade in and a total of £12.5k to spend on a replacement. I drive 25-30K miles a year so realistically should be a diesel. Only me and the wife so configuration (hatch/saloon/ragtop) not important but it must have cruise control & Sat Nav. -
Nissan Primera Radiator damage 7 Nov 2004 (Forum)
A friend with a 3 week old Primera found it losing coolant in a big way from the radiator. They are not car literate and were initially fobbed off by dealer with the line of, "stone damage, not covered by warranty....... happens regularly!" -
Seat Ibiza vs Nissan Almera 15 Sep 2004 (Forum)
So, we're downsizing to one car between the two of us and the above two pretty much cover what we want. Can anyone suggest any others to consider? Anything I should be wary of? What would you choose? TIA -
Congestion Charge Fine 24 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I sold my old Micra about 5 weeks ago and received a £40 congestion Charge Fine in the post a couple of weeks later. The incident occured about a week after i\'d sold the car. I send back the form saying I\'d sold the car but couldn\'t remember the full address of the buyer - but i had sent the registration document back to DVLA as required by law. -

Who likes the speedo in the middle? 1 Sep 2003 (Forum)
However, I was disappointed to see that the C8 instrument cluster is in the centre of the cabin. Now in 30-odd years I've never owned a car where the instruments aren't in line with the steering wheel and I associate the central positioning of instruments with old-fashioned or utility vehicles e.g. Morris Minor, BL Mini, Land Rover. If I'm going to shell out thousands of pounds, I want the car designer to make the driver's job as easy as possible. -
importing a cheap merc... 22 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Is a LHD on UK roads really that much of a problem and is it a problem trying to resell a LHD car later on? b) Also, have been told that due to their 10 year scrapping Law, singapore is a great place to source cheap, relatively modern and most importantly RHD Mercs. Has anyone gone down this route and can they advise if the benefits of a cheaper car are outweighed by wait, import costs and shipping costs? -
