  • Car renting advice 3 Nov 2008 (Forum)
    I'm thinking of getting either a VW Passat or Focus, would like it to be diesel. While approaching one of the car rental companies, could I be specific about a model and fuel type? If so what would be the best possible car rental company in or around Slough? { typo in header corrected }

  • Daytime Running Lights - again! 26 Sep 2008 (Forum)
NOW EUROCRATS TELL DRIVERS TO KEEP CAR LIGHTS ON ALL DAY http://tinyurl.com/4g4fao Now Europe wants us to keep headlights on ALL day - inflating fuel costs by up to £160 a year http://tinyurl.com/3qc45n What is the point of having head light on on daytime??? Why other EU countries are supporting this? I don't think any EU country except Scandinavian areas doesn't get enough sun shine.
  • Audi 80/90 Mk 1 (1986 - 1991) - 1990 2.0 starting problems 25 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Hi, I have an Audi 80 H reg. Recently, I was having stating problems and eventually it wouldn't start at all - the fuel pump had given up. I replaced this with an aftermarket pump, but now still have stating problems both hot or cold. It takes about three long cranks of the ignition switch to start. Once started it runs fine.
  • 1984, The last big diesel engine wax up. You? 19 Sep 2008 (Forum)
On one of the trips down in a petrol Fiesta it was well below freezing, perhaps below minus 10C and just about every truck on the road, entering Wales, seemed to have pulled over with a waxed fuel supply. In Swansea bay the sea was actually frozen in piles as the surf hit the shore. I had at this point almost chosen a Fiesta diesel, which would have been my first and the incident put me off diesel until 1991.
  • Volkswagen Golf II (1983 - 1992) - 91 1.3 petrol in oil 20 Aug 2008 (Forum)
hi, i'm just wandering anyone would know if there is anywayz the petrol could mix with the oil on these engines?, the things is the car is a very poor starter the fuel delivary is nearly non existant and the oil light likes coming on quite often but the carb stinks of petrol and the rocker cover stinks of petrol, i did manage to fix a leak in the inlet manifold due to a failed gasket but weirdly the manifold its self was swimming in petrol, i was told the float settings in the car don't need to be adjusted because their self-adjusting????
  • Vauxhall Vectra B (1995 - 1999) - 1997 2.5 v6 rich idle 20 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Dash display normally says 0.2 or 0.3 gals/hour, but when this rich idle is going on it jumps to around 0.8! I have cleaned the throttle body, breathers and IAV to no avail. Before I cause a fuel shortage, has anyone got an idea what might be causing this. Thanks TN
  • Renault Megane (1999 - 2002) - 01 1.6 Door will not unlock 18 Jun 2008 (Forum)
My offside rear door does not unlock when the central locking is operated. Other doors ,bootlock and fuel filler cover locks all work fine. I can hear the electric lock operate on the rear door when the central locking key is pressed. Unfortunately the childproof tab was in operation when this fault started , so the door is immovable.
  • BMW 7-Series E38 (1994 - 2001) - 97 2.8 starting problem 5 May 2008 (Forum)
Our 7 series has an ongoing problem. When you go to start the car, you get no red lights on dash or fuel pump whurr. It only starts off a jump, but when you turn it off after a short or long run it refuses to start. Also when the engine is running there is a clicking from behind the air vents above the stereo every so often.
  • Volkswagen Passat (1997 - 2000) - 2000 1.8 20v se; disconnected hose 23 Mar 2008 (Forum)
The hose was located in the centre section of the engine compartment where the battery is located. I think the hose may relate to the operation of the fuel consumption computer, which now fluctuates erratically. Can anyone explain where/how I should reinstall the hose? Thanks.
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 1996 1.4 - loss of electrics/lights 10 Mar 2008 (Forum)
My son has a 1996 fiesta which has just had a new 1.4 zeetec enngine fitted. Since then the fuel guage does not work and as soon as you need lights at night the engine dies. Has also died while driving along but this is intermittant. Believe this may be an electrical/bad earth fault but need some help in which direction to look.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 1996 1.8 petrol- wont rev over 3500 and runs rough 7 Mar 2008 (Forum)
My 1996 1.8 petrol multi point fuel injected 306 is difficult to start and when it does start it will only pick up revs to 3500 rpm very slowly even under heavy throttle. It is running rough and appears to be running like the timing is retarted. when the revs do eventually reach 3500 i can hear a solenoid click and the revs drop back to around 2000. is very hard to drive as it has no power at all.
  • Honda Accord UK (2003 - 2008) - 55 plate CDTI - glowplug light on 31 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Do these have any history of pump failure?, or injectors needing re-programmed? It's just that having an 05 Mondeo TDCi, (which had a new fuel pump under warranty last week) I get suspicious when I hear of symptoms like this. Any thoughts / comments appreciated
  • Vauxhall Astra F (1991 - 1998) - 1.4 - cutting out. and fault reading. 9 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Hi I have an astra 1.4 merit. while stood at the lights or a junction it will cut out. all the lights come on. will turn over great, but will not start. there is power to the plugs, fuel and air. if I leave it for about twenty minutes it will fire up as sweet as anything then drive for maybe a couple of weeks befor it does it again. i have tried reading the fault codes, but the only code i get is 12 (the start code for reading), then nothing, it just keeps repeating the same code (12). can anyone help. thanks. barry.
  • Peugeot 406 (1999 - 2004) - 2003 HDi Handbrake 20 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Since the handbrake uses a drum within the rear disc, it never gets any wear on the linings, and in fact I don't think mine had ever got properly bedded in. Simply run (preferably down a steepish hill or two to avoid fuel wastage) with the handbrake firmly on,to bed in the brake linings properly, and the handbrake will subsequently work much better. It might then be worth re-adjusting using a screwdriver through the hole on the drum, to maximise the benefit.

  • Ford Fusion (2002 - 2008) - Zetec 1.6HDi - opinions welcome 21 Aug 2007 (Forum)
I'm being tempted to buy a Ford Fusion Zetec 1.6HDi and wonder what experience people might have of it. There's comment in road tests about the noise level, for example. What about fuel economy? I thought the driver's seat was a bit small and lacked thigh support.... Anyone done more than 50K in one and if so, do they last well? They're doing good offers on a special edition Pursuit version at the moment, anyone got one, or seen any road tests of it?
  • Recent Journey a Rare Delight 16 Jul 2007 (Forum)
I arrived at my destination at both journey ends in a calm and relaxed state. The only downside, my naughty Panda 4x4 only achieves fuel economy in the low 30's when cruising at 70mph. Oh well, can't ave it all.
  • Bio Diesel 2 Jun 2007 (Forum)
I also have the option of using 100% Bio Diesel, but as the car is still under warranty I don't want to cause any problems. So far all only problem could be with any rubber seals in the fuel line, but I think all new cars use synthetic rubber. I am aware not to change to 100% in one go due to it's cleaning action.
