  • Peugeot 406: any benefit from vpower 30 Jun 2007 (Forum)
I have read the manual and it does not mention whether it is better to run on 95 or 98 RON. I understand that some cars can adjust their fuel consumption according to the type of petrol being used. Will this happen in my car? I would appreciate any help and advice from users of BP ultimate or shell vpower, or peugeot owners, (and anyone else for that matter)
  • Automatics - cheaper to maintain?? 12 Jun 2007 (Forum)
This time I'm looking for an automatic (mostly for my wife who recently started learning to drive and after several lessons still having fights with gearstick & clutch). Other than slightly lower fuel economy, is there anything about automatics I should be aware of? I'm yet to decide which car to buy though.
  • Toyota carina e - question? 31 May 2007 (Forum)
The reason I ask, is if it is petrol, then could I use petrol as a lubricant alternative safely as I have found that the flash lube smells exactly the same as petrol. Can this effect fueling in the engine etc? Your expertise is much appreciated. Thanks Greg
  • Mondeo - mpg 18 Apr 2007 (Forum)
The specs of the 2.2 show 46.3mpg (from Ford) yet on my car info display it averages around 39.1 mpg (i have seen a marked increase in fuel used, a trip to my parents would take 1/4 in my old mondeo in this one it is almost half). Is this the price i pay for a 2.2 155bhp vehicle or is something wrong with it?!
  • Need help with car choice... 4 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Hi Guys, I need a med/large family car with a budget of £3500-£4000 Priorities are - reliability, fuel economy, Comfort. My shortlist with my concerns is: Honda accord - Running costs too high? Vectra (02-05) - Reliability/build quality? Mondeo - Reliability? Toyota Avensis - Dull to drive? If i went for the mondeo or Vectra, what are the chances of it reaching its 10th birthday without picking up large repair bills, ie Clutch/suspension.
  • omega diesel engine to bmw 525 td 2 Jan 2007 (Forum)
    Hi to all, we swapped an omega 2.5 diesel engine [95-7] to a bmw 525 td 1995. After the swap, car wouldnt start with the light 'fuel inection system fault' came up continously. We had a chat with afew people and the y said put the bmw pump in place of the omega's unit as it was working before. We need to find out if any one out there has done this conversion and what went wrong and how they got round this.........many thanks...dave {Duplicate post made in 'Discussion' deleted to avoid repetition of replies - DD}
  • Citroen C3 1.4 Petrol 23 Nov 2006 (Forum)
The instrument lights were permanently on (even after locking the car) the speedometer would not work, the fuel gauge showed empty and had only done 90 miles on a full tank. The radio has gone haywire, indicators would not work, odometer would not work, air bag light and headlight indicator on. I disconnected the battery and waited a few minutes to allow the computer to reset.
  • Still want a new MG ZT V8? 12 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Apparently SMC of Slough have the last 3 unregistered MG ZT V8's (Rover 75 derived) left in the country* so if you fancy a stonking Ford powered V8 you know what to do! Old technology OHV engine and shocking fuel consumption.. who cares? ..and the real beauty the price is just £15995. If I had the cash i would be there like a shot. BTW I have no connection whatsoever with this garage, just passing on a great oppertunity.!
  • Speed limiters on all cars 13 Sep 2006 (Forum)
What a cracking idea - linked to GPS technology to automatically reduce the speed of the car to the immediate prevailing limit. Advantages: lower fuel consumption less points on licenses probably less accidents/road deaths less chance of being slammed into at 90mph by someone coming the other way. It wouldn´t be too expensive, as the cost of producing 30,000,000 would drive the prices down.
  • Mondeo Exhaust(ed) 6 Jun 2006 (Forum)
(Other than to give their mechanics work that is) My car has been lifted nearly four feet off the floor and no matter which way the exhaust is twisted, turned or coaxed, it will not clear the axle without hitting the fuel tank, the spare wheel well or the car body. Any suggestions for future reference?
  • 2001 Astra Dti 2.0 trouble starting 25 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Takes about 5 mins to start it, after that no probs apart from today when it played up after leaving it fot 3 hrs.Heard it might be injector seals letting fuel drain back into tank But also heard it could cost £300 to get em replaced due to labour involved, any ideas to try before this 1 ? Never had a diesel before any do's and dont's to owning one? Cheers Del
  • Passat diesel pump recall 5 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Read on the Forum about the recall (ref R/2004/211) concerning the possible breaking of diesel pump-cover bolts and subsequent fuel leak. How can I tell, besides asking the dealer, if this car has had the recall? Will it be marked in the service book? Anything else I should be looking for before handing over the balance? All seems to be OK to my eyes, but you never can be 100% sure!
  • passat 1.6td estate 1990 axle bushes 13 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Would this be a job for a diy mechanic with alot of spare time. I am reluctant to scrap it as its fuel economy is fantastic, the other option is to keep it for spares and buy another one. so has anyone done this job if so how hard is it. All the other jobs are very simple and not a problem. thanks
  • Astra 2.0 DTi 16v - is it any kop? 8 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Model is 2.0 DTi 16v CD and it seems drive ok and engine seems pretty useful for a diesel. No niggles that HJ's guide points out for it and it's got full dealer history, new cambelt, fuel pump replaced not long ago so all in all seems to point to a fairly decent buy - although the interior seems dull, but then it is a vauxhall I guess. Anyone had one for a while/driven one regularly that can give me an opinion?
  • BP Ultimate Diesel 4 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Not bad considering I've never had the light come on, normally use normal diesel and it's normally £55 ish. So that's a difference of a mere £4-£5, probably less. Not bad for a 'premium' fuel. I haven't noticed any performance boosts, well, nothing tangible, but maybe it will do more miles to a tank. I also put some Millers Diesel P+ in.
  • Ford Focus Instrument Panel 26 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Until yesterday I had not used my Ford Focus 1.6 (2003) for 4 weeks. The car has been kept in a garage. Yesterday before starting the car, I noticed that the Fuel Guage & Temperature Guage read approximately 1/3 before turning on the ignition!. The car started first runs OK, the guages then read as expected, but on turning off the ignition and parking the car the guages not zero.

It is has now done 93,500 miles and ticks over like it did when I bought it in Jan 2001.I get it serviced yearly and change the oil about every 5000 miles.
