Madness to buy diesel-engined car? 10 Oct 2024 (Forum)
I had to let go my old and faithful diesel engined car last year as it didn’t meet the emissions criteria for me to drive it in the middle of Bristol without paying the £9 daily charge. Ever since I have been looking for a replacement which is as economical on the motorway as my old motor. -

Which Merc or BMW is best for a dull driver 24 Mar 2012 (Forum)
My wife has said that she wants a “comfortable” car which seems to boil down to a Merc or BMW, although other cars that could be driven by salesman of the month types would fit. What models of Mercs or BMWs (or similar) cars would be able to fit this mould. -
bmw z3 - Second car insurance 28 Jan 2012 (Forum)
I tried a couple of the multicar ones, but they don't work out any cheaper than the two lowest individual quotes. Z3 is 11 years old, so I thought classic might be an option, but so far all the ones I've found needed the car to be 15 years old. -
Insurance Claim Issue 2 Apr 2011 (Forum)
OK, was at a well known family holiday centre like Haven, Butlins etc.. in the car park (with gates and barriers to prevent public entry) I went into reception leaving my 12yr old son and 5yr old daughter to get out the car and come in when they were ready. They came in and my son said the duaghter fell out the car and the door knocked the door handle of the car next to us. -
Volkswagen VW Polo 1.2 Twist - Should I buy this car 26 Jun 2010 (Forum)
I was planning to use it for university - was going to use mums car (Nissan Micra 1.0 Tempest) and she was going to get an old banger but instead of (imo) wasting time with old cars that may need to get serviced alot to get this one to last longer? What do you guys think? -
Bentley 4.5 litre / Bugatti Veyron - Two £600,000 cars at auction this week 7 Jun 2010 (Forum)
The small print should remind people that 'investments can go down as well as up'. Ask anybody who paid a blindingly stupid price for an old car during the last 'bubble', 20 years ago. Although I suppose, as most of these people are in it for the money rather than a love of old cars, if the price/value eventually plummets they will just put it down as a tax loss. -
Jaguar X Type for Commute? 18 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Hi, Following on from my previous thread of needing a daily commute car for 100plus miles per day. Requirements were Reliability Good Performance for Motorway Car must be under 5 years old All this for around £5k I now realise this was a pretty tall order for a car less than 5 years old at around £5k However we have stretched our budget £7.5k I notice there are lots of X type jags at this price...lots of 2 litre diesels and 3.0 v6 petrols. has anyone any experience on this car? -
Cars - too big or what? 27 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Been musing over the last few days about the subject header. Are cars getting too big? Nicoles clio 3 parked next to sons clio 1 is a graphic example, for a car that has a "small" image and "small" sales sector its really quite big. The new mondeo is huge, well bigger than the old granada- which in its day was consdered a big car. -
The last subframe salt rinser? 11 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Am I one of the last subframe/underbody rinsers? Of road salt, that is... Was looking with a friend at cars a few years old today and piles of dirt and corrosion scabs on the subframes of some cars. I have a habit from years ago, of washing the salt of underneath very frequently in winter. On one of my recent cars I brushed waterproof grease onto the subframes. -

car salesman turned magician 28 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Congrats to the car salesman who in front of the eyes of my 18 year old daughter (and fortunately those of my wife and I) turned a £4000 retail Polo into a £6000 car with only the aid of a computer screen and his manager behind the scenes. -

Banger, £3k or 3 year old? 25 Nov 2003 (Forum)
It has 129,000 miles, and is in good nick otherwise, i can hide most of the other problems for the length of a test drive (Note: Please no-one on this site buy this car!) I'm thinking it might be easier to get rid of as a p/x, as they might not check it out so stringently! The options are: 1.Another car the same (i might have trouble explaining the reason for a direct replacement at the dealer tho) 2.A newer shape, £3k ish of the same prob R reg 100000 - with 1 year warranty a requirement 3.A 1.6 Escort, S reg 75000miles with a few toys 4.Some dirt cheap old banger with standard 3 months warranty 5.Or push the boat out and somehow afford a 3 yearold something Considerations: 20 year-old male, so Pug group 5 insurance looks good over Escort group 7. -

Eurpoe Breakdown ins for cars over 10 yrs 6 Feb 2002 (Forum)
My Volvo 940 GLE Nov 1991, is clearly over 10 years old. National Breakdown no longer cover cars over 10 year old for Europe. As with all big Sweedish Volovs {not the Dutch ones} its in first class condition bodily and has only covered 90 odd thousand miles. -
Buying used car 17 Sep 2016 (Forum)
I don't mind a used car as such but I haven't got much knowledge about cars so advice would be appreciated. How old the car should be, does that affect reliability? What should I look for? Thank u very much in advance. -
Company Car - New or Used? 3 Jul 2016 (Forum)
I am trying to compare the benefits from an cost efficiency, tax and user perspective between continuning to buy new cars and buying cars that might be 2-3 years old. Most obviously buying a 2-3 year old car would mean mileage is already on the clock so turnover would be increased, however, £20k for a new car compared to £10k (for example) may offset this turnover.
