  • The one pound litre, and a sheep. 28 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Toad had an nice outing today, but it takes some of the fun out of blowing at 16psi wondering about the mpg and hoping that is at least in double figures. The funny thing was, we were run into by a sheep. Here was this silly animal capering in the road, egged on by some colleagues on the proper side of the fence. So we just stopped dead, to let things sort themselves out. It was not expected that the creature would leap in the air and then run into us, as happened, before it ran down the side of the car to the rear; whereupon we withdrew rapidly before worse happened.

  • VW Bora Heating Question 20 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Can anyone help? My wife has a VW Bora 1.9TDi, 90PS which is now used for mostly local runs after a life of longer runs with me. In the winter the heater has always taken a good few miles to get up to full heat (around 10 minutes). I have a newer Golf TDi which appears to have an immersion heater because there is some heat from the heater within a mile or so.
  • Any auto trans bods in the house? 22 Mar 2006 (Forum)
To outline the project, I have a 2.2 litre front wheel drive Renault Espace automatic, to which I am planning to mid mount a 4 litre Jag engine and auto box, driving a rear axle. (That's as well as the front engine, not instead of!) I can sort most of the problems with running both ends together, but where I'm going to come unstuck is when in economy mode and just running on the front engine, the rear trans is going to cook its clutches. (ie when being towed) I'm wondering if circulating the trans fluid through a cooler with an electric pump would overcome the problem?
  • HJ's Jetta test 1 Mar 2006 (Forum)
But the Honda is not cheap to run and I'd thought about one of the new Passat diesels because they look very good. But is the Jetta a more sensible solution? Sounds it.
  • Escort 1994 1.6 16v 13 Feb 2006 (Forum)
i have recentley rebuilt my zetec but also with piper cams & flowing and porting and an fse power boost valve i also have had the ecu reflashed to match the mods but its a pain to start, idles irractically, and has a bad misfire after you rev it up misses on way back down to idle speed ive had the timing done abut 3 times its got new plugs gapped at 1mm, new leads, new earths, new mass air meter, new lamda sensor and new engine sensors but it still has the same problem any ideas cos its cost me a small fortune but its currently running at 160 brake with 140 torque so when it runs ok it will be well worth it ps it still does 30 to the gallon
  • Peugeot 106 Life Expectancy 3 Feb 2006 (Forum)
The vehicle had a new rad, cylinder head gasket, and head skim (7 thou removed) and timing belt at 55k. It did short runs - ie 7-8 miles- first 40k but since then long runs. Oil and filter -peugeot filter- every 7-8k. Are there any other problems i should watch out for on this matter?? Any advice would be most appreciated.
  • Hyundai diesel engine query 1 Feb 2006 (Forum)
It is also quite sluggish for the first 1/2 mile or so. Also, even when the car has returned from a good long fast run, the smell of the car exhaust is quite oily. And I would say that the economy of the car on a good long run, is not marvellous at about 32mpg at best. Do people think that the injection timing is out slighty, are all these symptoms simply characteristic of the engine/transmission combination?
  • volvo 440 battery light flicker..... 23 Sep 2005 (Forum)
the voltage regulator in the alternator is fine too as it is giving out a nice even charge (no surges) the only key events that could possibly of contributed are , 1. the battery in the remote keyfob became flat causing the imobilisor diode to flash constantly when engine runs 2.the battery on the car was totally flat one morning, but charged fine and hasnt run down again i am totally confused as i have tried all the sensible diagnostics and still am non the wiser , the beers are on me if someone has a good solution!!
  • 3500 miles in a week! 1 Sep 2005 (Forum)
We've all read about 200mph supercars, but I didn't think owners had the skills - or the roadspace - to actually get near this figure on the highway?! Backroom wisdom suggests that long motorway runs are good for modern cars, but what additional wear & tear can I expect after running at 125+mph for a couple of hours?
  • Stalling Lotus Elan 24 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Took out my '72 Elan on Sunday with my youngest son for a run. Filled up with BP Ulitmate Unleaded @96P litre. Within 1 mile the car stalled at approach to major roundabout. Got started after about 5 - 10 minutes. Car then repeated the exercise 5 times in space of 1 mile.
  • Misfire when warm - VW Bora 1.6 5 Apr 2005 (Forum)
I've got a 99 Bora 1.6 8v. It started misfiring and running poorly at the weekend only when warmed up showing 80C+ on the temp gauge. The car runs OK on low throttle openings but when accelerating at more than granny pace or a steady 50mph+ it's misfiring.

  • Pierburg 2E3 carb stalling 22 Jan 2005 (Forum)
It seems the choke comes off too early or the ideling speed at that time is too low. VW main dealer replaced the pull down unit but have now pretty much run out of ideas and they havent fixed it! Any ideas for a fix welcome.
  • So what is the offence? 8 Dec 2004 (Forum)
In this action he loses control, attempts to correct, overdoes it and vehicle goes out of control towards the nearside, crashes through a fence into a field. A horse in the field is spooked (frightened), runs out of the field through the accident gap in the fence and starts running along the carriageway of the M way. The horse is then hit by a car, the driver of which sustains injury and dies later in hospital.
  • 1996 vw golf vr6 lumpy idling 25 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Ive have thorougly checked over the work many times to make sure everything is tight and secure. I cant see where i have gone wrong. Someone did mention whether i had left the engine running while any of the parts i.e. airfilter/air intake were removed & replaced. As far as i can remmeber, the engine was accidently left running for approx 5mins without the airfilter & air intake connected.
  • Mystery water leak Rover 214 SEi 31 May 2004 (Forum)
My future son in law has a 'M' plate Rover 214 SEi petrol. After the car has been used on any kind of run (short/long), after the engine has cooled down there is a small puddle of water 3/4 inches diameter under the forward end of the engine. When the engine is running there is no sign of a leak from either the hoses, pump or radiator.
  • Rover 414 SLi 'M' Reg - warning light... 21 Apr 2004 (Forum)
No change in power/running at all. Is this just another of Rovers electrical oddities? 2) The front driver's side of the car seems to sit a little lower than the passenger side...no more than 1/2 an inch or so. The shock absorber seems ok (balances out after one dip etc).
  • Zafira with strange clutch problem 9 Mar 2004 (Forum)
It has a most annoying intermittent fault that the Vauxhall dealer seems to be at a complete lose to know what to do and is unable to cure the fault. Problem is the hydraulics to the clutch. It works fine when running round town but as soon as I go on a run of 20 miles or so at a constant speed of 70 ish all hydraulic pressure is lost leaving the vehicle without a clutch. Bleeding the system restores everything but it happens again after another 20 miles and so on.....
