  • London 'supper highway' 18 Sep 2016 (Forum)
I had a need to drive into central London, Friday daytime, as I'm now semi retired its something I only do every 3 months or so. Public transport is not an option. The superhighway 'cycle' rendered the drive from City A/P to W1 difficult and lengthened by roads now closed to vehicles, available only to cycles.
  • Lada 4x4 2013 - Car noises 27 May 2016 (Forum)
After this river crossing I changed the oil of the following: gear box, transfer case, front and rear differential and greased again the drive shaft (propeller). Mechanics are puzzled with this situation because they point it to many causes, example: rear wheel bearing, drive shaft, shaft crosses, exhaust pipe, gear box, etc.
  • Cars with bits missing - Italian tune ups and courtesy 27 Apr 2016 (Forum)
Used local trains south to sorrento/salerno, better than driving, and saw some interesting scrap yards near Nocera...
  • Route advice please - Dundee to Tobermory 17 Apr 2016 (Forum)
I drive V40 D4 these days so can get past slow stuff and I like to press on. Dundee/Perth/Oban is AA's recommendation, but don't know it. I have done Crianlarich>Corran>Lochaline a couple of times which is great, but just wondering about going up via Laggan down to Fort William.
  • 2003 Ford Focus 1.8 - Fuel pump issues 10 Apr 2016 (Forum)
Hello, Yesterday, I bought a lovely 5dr 2003 ford focus 1.8 (petrol). It had worked perfectly on the test drive and passed its MOT fine.  However, when collecting it, it initially would not start. Turned out to be the fuel pump fuse which had blown (called out the AA) - possibly because the fuel level had got so low.
  • Ford S-Max 1.8 TDCI - S-Max 1.8 TDCI - Misfire under load. 3 Mar 2016 (Forum)
However, the really peculiar thing is that it is particularly bad when the fuel tank is full and becomes less noticeable/problematic as the tank empties. At about 1/4 tank full and less, the car drives near perfect. As an example, yesterday the car was driving near perfect (even when giving it lots of welly!) but only had 100 miles range left, I then filled up and the car almost immediately started misfiring and struggling to rev under load.

  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 2002 tdci - juddering at 2000 revs 4 Jan 2016 (Forum)
Hi, I have a friend who has a problem with a Ford Mondeo 2002 2.0TDCI 130ps engine. The car appears to drive fine and pulls away with no problem. When you accelerate to approx 55mph in fifth gear then come come off the revs and sit with your foot barely touching the throttle at approx 1950 revs, the engine appears to become very lumpy, juddering infact, as if you were peppering the throttle.
  • Any thoughts about the BMW 2.0i engine? 16 Dec 2015 (Forum)
And it was beautifully quiet and refined. The 225i comes with 4WD (X-drive).  I've had FWD cars for 45 years so not sure if I need 4WD.  But it could be an advantage, especially as we live now in rural Dorset on the side of a steepish hill. Anyone else tried a petrol BMW recently?

  • Do you have your eyesight checked ? 31 Jul 2015 (Forum)
However, towards the end of the consultation he talked about things which MIGHT  happen to anybody's sight as a result of aging ( which we all hope to do ) If we live long enough our sight will become not be good enough for driving.  Whoever is first to say (me or the consultant) I will stop driving immediately. What I later thought about is how many people are unaware of problems ? A post will never lead to legislation, but I do hope that anyone reading this will make sure they have their eyes checked regularly - especially when over 60.
  • Vauxhall Vectra diesel 2ltrs 2004 - gear changing issue 19 Jul 2015 (Forum)

  • Hyundai 1.4 eco IX20 2012 - steering pulls to left 8 Mar 2015 (Forum)
The dealers said that they had retracked the wheels, but that did not completely cure the problem,so I had it rechecked on a computer tracking system & they found the front nearside wheel out of alignment. unfortunatly this has still not completely cleared the fault as when driving on good roads I still have to hold the steering as the car still seems to slightly pull to the near sideand the steering still seems very sensitive to the road camber & ruts ect .Its not serious but makes driving the car unpleasant, not at all like the IX20 eco 1.6 diesel they lent me while they had my car any suggestions would be welcome
  • Will I get away with a diesel? 13 Dec 2014 (Forum)
I enjoy driving turbo cars, but petrol turbo cars are thirsty.  The only exception I am aware of is VAG's 1.4 TSI but that's currently above my budget. I work generally work 7 days a week and trying to figure out if my driving pattern will be ok with a dpf 5 days a week I am local - so 2.5 miles to work.
  • Hyundai i30 Automatic - First Service 10 Dec 2014 (Forum)
I have to say this is the best car I have owned, not the slighest problem, very comfortable and a pleasure to drive and I get 6 lt/100 km with mixed driving, but, the shortest journey we make is 30km so I think that helps. As an aside, I couldn't find you in The Telegraph but luckily I have found your web site, which is much better than the newspaper!
  • Insurance write off, query about keeping the car 4 Oct 2014 (Forum)
They say I have to repair the car within 30 days and show proof of repairs otherwise my insurance will become void.. Can they do this? Secondly they want a copy of the existing MOT, a copy of my driving license, and the original V5c which they will return.  Why ? I couldn't get a logical answer. Surely if I didn't have a driving license I couldn't get insurance in the first place.  Seems like red tape to me satisfying some computer form they have.
  • To diesel or not to diesel, that is the question 30 Aug 2014 (Forum)
My Mileage is about to increase from around 10k a year to around 18k. At the moment I drive a 10 year old 2.0l petrol mazda 3 and on a long motorway drive I get around 38mpg @ 80mph yet my  friends and colleagues that have a German diesel of similar capacity seem to get 50-55mpg.
  • Ford Focus Zetec 1.6 TDCI 09 plate - Ford Focus 09 - loss of power, intermittant 24 Jun 2014 (Forum)
Hi all, I'm hoping someone can help - really tearing my hair out over this!! My 09 Focus has an intermittant issue - when I'm driving along (and sometimes while stationary), all power to the engine goes, and the engine cuts out. When I'm driving and it does it, it feels like I've hit the brakes; the revs carry on, but when I coast to a standstill, it stalls and cuts out.
