Nissan Qashqai - Bought a cloned car and got stolen - Harman

Hi Friends,

I am victim of buying cloned car.

In Brief : I bought a car about 1.5 months ago from private seller. He shown me car in front of same address mentioned on log book. He showed me is driving license which was showing same address. After test drive and negotiations I bought the car. I paid most of amount as bank transfer and rest in cash.

After 3 days, Car got stolen from my driveway. called the police and later I got to know this car was having closed Reg number and police suspect it is taken by sellers only.

Now case is with Police. Insurance company refuse to pay out as vehicle was cloned :(.

Any advice, suggestion how I could get my funds back.

My advice

you have to be so so careful buying private.

Worth paying the extra to buy from a dealer.

i suspect you got a good deal buying private or what looked like a good deal at the time. problem is that if the deal looks too good its normally for a reason.

did you get photo of chap you bought from ? is he still at address ?

I doubt it. Its often someones house where they are away on holiday & stolen licence out of the house & a cloned reg doc

Chance of getting money back almost zero I'm afraid

Sadly becoming a too familiar problem.

I still have keys with me and it has serial number on . Is it possible to find vehicle associated to these keys?

Very sorry to hear about what has happened to you OP.

If you ever buy a car privately it's essential you go into the sellers house at some point during the sale. This will be normal practice for an honest seller, anyway, since he won't want to carry out business standing in the street or, even, sitting in a vehicle.

I'm not at all hopeful you'll get anything back, I'm very sorry to have to say. All you can do is to keep liasing with the Police and your insurance company.

I myself won't buy or sell cars privately anymore, but I know a lot of folk still do.

Destroy the keys or hand them in to the police. By the sounds of your question, you are wondering about 'finding' the car and taking it.

You do NOT have legal title to the car. You taking it - even though, in your mind, you 'bought' it - would be the criminal offence of theft.

You got caught out by your own carellessness (and probably greed, a really cheap car which seemed 'too good to be true').

Do not make further mistakes which could easily land you up in a prison cell.

Can you reverse the bank transfer as the transaction was fraudulent? Or trace where the transfer went to? I'd contact your bank ASAP about this.

It probably just went to a 'mule' account but it's worth looking into.

Yes, I did so. But my bank said funds were taken out on same day :(
