  • Insuring second car for under 21 driver 10 Jan 2008 (Forum)
His only option seems to be insure the car as his own (second car) then cancel the insurance when the car is delivered....which seems rather stupid (from insurace company point of view) and not sure if insurance companies will let him do this anyway without a penalty. Any suggestions? thanks S. As it is a surprise his mother must know nothing about it...so difficult to insure under her name...

  • Volvo S40/V40 (1996 - 2004) - 1.9D Cambelt 6 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Hi, My wife?s car has just suffered a cam belt failure, which the local-ish Volvo dealer has said has caused major damage. What's worrying me is that the car only has 61K miles on the clock, has always been maintained by Volvo dealer, has belt changed at 50K service, per Volvo recommendation.
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - R reg - 1.25 - EGR valve 23 Dec 2007 (Forum)
i have recently changed my engine in my R reg Fiesta mk 4. i have dropped in a 1.25 zetec s the same as what was in before, the only difference bieng that it has an egr valve which my original engine did not, therefore i need to do something with it. i have been given two opinions as to what to do 1) put a piece of tubing between the two pipes creating a flow around bypassing what im told is a sensor or 2) Block it off???
  • Audi A4 B7 (2005 - 2008) - Want an Audi A4 - But when? 21 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Mileage is now just over 50k and before it gets stupidly high i want a change... Leading to my next choice, a facelifted version of the A4 2.0 TDI S-Line! I really like the car but i know there is a new model out soon. I'm unsure whether to wait and see what kind of price difference there is once that hits the market. And will there be more choice after this is released as current owners will p/x there older models?
  • MINI - Say I want a MINI, but..... 14 Nov 2007 (Forum)
I was a passenger in the MINI Cooper S (Mk 1 - 2006 version) this weekend. I have read all the problems and complaints about the car, but you can't deny that it is a fancy vehicle with lots of style. I also found that despite being low, it was easy to get into and out of - something which I think is a major plus for me.
  • How much power do you want and why? 26 Oct 2007 (Forum)
For me, I`m happy with little, contrasted with todays cars. Why? Well my first `car`was an 850cc Mini van back in the 60`s. You were really aware of hills and Shap fell on the M6 used to really take the speed off. I can remember years of climbing the M62 eastbound over the pennines at 40MPH in 3rd gear. Of course all that is forgotten about these days with modern cars, but i was reminded of it reading a forum on LDV (old post office) vans.
  • Toyota Auris (2007 - ) - Chugging noise 5 Oct 2007 (Forum)
I also noticed a high tapping sound like stone on stone which gets faster as the wheels turn and wonder if that is a stone trapped in the tread of the tyre - but thought i'd mention it if the 2 were related :s Any ideas? re-located into Technical, Make and Model etc would help if only to classify - PU
  • Honda Civic UK (1995 - 2000) - Will using with blowing exhaust cause any damage? 3 Oct 2007 (Forum)
....and why when manufacturers spend money jumping through legislative hoops on bystander noise can some yoof stick a noisy pipe on his hatchback/sports bike and pass an MOT? s
  • Jaguar XK and XKR (2006 - ) - Radio aerial 28 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Just followed a new XK whilst driving home from work and was shocked to see it?s radio aerial. Some kind of telescopic job, like on my £5 kitchen radio Rest of the way home I kept a look out, TT, SLK, AF Spider all have neat ?bee sting? type ones on the rump. To be honest, I had noticed this style of aerial before on the DB7 and the old XK, also on the MR2 and thought it odd.

It took half an hour's worth of thought and a few false starts but finally worked out how to gain access without breaking a window or cutting holes. So, anyone who wants to know how to get into a '90's Previa in less than 20 seconds just send some used tenners in a plain brown envelope to the usual address. It's a little bit scary that me on my own without the benefit of an education 'at her Majesty's pleasure' can come up with a quick and simple keyless entry method.
  • Build quality- japan versus the rest 16 Sep 2007 (Forum)
The build quality is excellent, The doors close with a satisfying "thunk" like its a real piece of metal. There`s not a patch of rust on it and everything works as it should. Its 12 years old and has done over 100k. Before this i had a 10 year old ford escort which appeared to be made of 2mm thick tinplate and was going on the arches and sills.
  • FIAT Ulysse (1995 - 2002) - Does welding a door shut cause an MoT problem ? 10 Sep 2007 (Forum)
If so, why, as there are I believe new models of, I think Peugeot?, which only have three doors, as built? -- Roger. (Costa del Sol, España) s
  • Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - 1.6 petrol cam belt issues 8 Sep 2007 (Forum)
It should be said that I couldn't use my regular mechanic as I was away, and had to use an untested garage. Any ideas? Would rather not the engine blow up on the M4. RJ s
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 02 TDCi (130) Will not start (please help) 6 Sep 2007 (Forum)
I returned it to them, and again, it worked fine for about a month, but has just started playing up again. Any help would be really great. Thank you all, James S
  • Strange Convoy 3 Sep 2007 (Forum)
I would not have thought that these are chauffeur cars judging by the filthy state of them. On other occasions I have noticed a similar procession on the same route made up of S Type Jags. Just seems a little weird when you see it. Suggestions?
  • Could we run Jaguar 22 Aug 2007 (Forum)
I have never owned a Jag but have always been a fan as I think they are well engineered (something I think is number 1 in a car), and have got the quality / customer bit right as well - according JD Power. It struck me that if they fixed the design on some cars (X type in particular - next S type looks good according to current spy shots) then these things should have no problem selling. So imagine we are now the new board at Jag and Ford have just sold it to HJ & asscoiates for £1 - what we would do next ???
  • X Ford Mondeo 1.8 cam belt / lifter 3 Aug 2007 (Forum)
After 2 days I noticed a tinkling noise from the engine and took it back to the garage. They repaired it and I have now been told me it was the lifters (whatever they are) and that it?s going to cost me an extra £147 (apparently I didn't need all to be changed) on top of what I've paid for the cam belt and service. Should I have to pay for this as there was no noise before I took it in?
  • Buying a Mini Cooper - Any suggestions? 16 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Right then, i'm in the mood for treating myself and i'm fed up of being practical! So i'm buying a Mini Cooper (Would have been a Cooper S until i got the insurance quote lol!) Saw one at auction today, had all the kit on Chilli Pack, big wheels, 15k, dark blue with a black and white roof and mirrors, looked quite funky actually! and very clean, bodywork was fine!
