  • Mitsubishi Space Wagon cough 14 Jul 2004 (Forum)
    Cruising at a steady 80 (French Autoroute) it seemed to "cough" every once in a while: no regularity to it, could be as frequently as every half mile or as rarely as once in 5. Am I right in thinking the engine management system is always trying to make it run as lean as possible? does it sometimes get it wrong? Is this a common trait, or limited to this car? Tim{P}
  • MPG for automatics 30 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I\'ve had a 1990 E30 320i for a year now and getting a bit pink fluffy dice off at how bad the MPG is, the best i can get on a long run down motorway is 25 mpg, i end up driving like a granny cause if i put my foot down the mpg goes well below 20 mpg. Is there any other car around the same size with a 2 litre engine thats automatic thats got a better MPG.
  • Servicing 27 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I'm inclined to leave it until it's 12 month service and then follow the advice of the FAQ on how to run in a new car (new synthetic oil and transmission oil change etc) Is a 6 month service a 'must' or are Honda jumping the gun a little? -- If at first you do succeed, try not to look astonished
  • rover 214 gsi 1991 block probs 21 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I have a light problem with the rover i just bought. 4 days after getting it the block cracked but not in the way i would have expected. there is not oil in the water or water in the oil all the cracks seem to affect is the containment of water in the engine. the engine its self stars and runs perfectly. i just wanted to know if there was any way to get around this problem without replacing the engine. Any help would be great. D
  • 306 HDi - squeaky wheel bearing? 8 Jun 2004 (Forum)
This appears to stop after a certain speed (perhaps 40mph?) and also lessens when the car has been running for a while?? Do the wheel bearings need lubricating at anytime? I can't see it as a lube-requiring item in the owner's handbook?
  • Bad tyres on new car 3 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Have just bought my wife a 2001 Y Focus - car absolutely great apart from the rear tyres (which are presumably the car's originals on 23k miles). They appear to have little cracks around the edge - don't know whether they have been run under-inflated. Should I insist on some recompense for a new pair of back tyres .... or should I swallow it and buy them myself? Any advice would be greatfully received! Yoby
  • Brunstrom joke 30 May 2004 (Forum)
This low tech device will consist of an OAP equiped with a calendar sitting in her freshhly burgled home waiting for a member of his force to arrive and investigate the crime. The scale will run from 2 days to infinity. Well made me laugh...
  • oil price shock!! 28 May 2004 (Forum)
nice sunny day, but no nieghbours washing hang out, so i had the idea of starting my out-boards up for a little run. went to garage got 25lts petrol for £22.45 (not so bad) then picked up a 1ltr bottle of outboard oil, £8.00 A LITRE!!!!. that equates to £40 a gallon! and you don't get to keep it for 6000mls either, it burns as fast as the petrol.
  • Legacy whine 26 Feb 2004 (Forum)
The rear axle is covered in oil, but not dropping any on my drive, so this condition could have existed for a while. Is the noise cause for serious concern, especially if transmission related? the car runs fine, but better safe than sorry. Any ideas please on what I should check out?
  • mk3 fiesta 1.1 losing oil 25 Feb 2004 (Forum)
My little fiesta is losing oil and i don't know where its going. I don't see any traces of oil lying under the motor even when its running and i've checked the spark plugs to see if theres any oil on them, but theres nothing. Theres also no blue smoke from the exhaust. Could anybody out there please give me some indication of where this oil is going to?
  • heated rear window wire - Escort Mk4 15 Feb 2004 (Forum)
I'm trying to replace the feed wire that goes between the tailgate and the body. I've taken the plastic cover off that runs up the inside of the pillar, only to find solid metal underneath! I don't want to attack the rubber hose that keeps the wires weatherproof as I'm worried it will split. Any help appreciated. Mike Farrow
  • Pajero crankshaft pulley 26 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Friend has just been told that his crankshaft pulley has worked loose on his 95 2.5 Pajero, evidently this is a common problem, has anyone any experiance of this? His 4x4 was drivable to the garage and was showing signs of rougth running below 1500rpm but above was OK, eventualy the drive belt came off and all power steering was lost etc. The garage is saying that the end of the crank is damaged and therefore he would be better getting a replacement engine.
  • audi 80 revving up 2 Jan 2004 (Forum)
There is no entanglement between the clutch and throttle cable and the carb is well set up and smooth in operation, the car is running well perhaps a little on the lean side even. Any ideas?
  • High mileage corsa 13 Dec 2003 (Forum)
The mileage is at 110k. Any thought onto how much life the vehicle has left? It\'ll be used as a school run/shopping car so not much mileage but alot of the obvious start stop strain. TIA Himji
  • I have a question Volume 23 9 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Tried a wireless transmitter from Maplin - snowy pic so tried a co-ax link but this too is very snowy and won't work with the remote controller eye gizmo at all. It's a long run of co-ax (40m) so I bought very low loss cable but so far it's a dead loss - any thoughts people?
  • Diesel in 205 petrol engine. Won\'t start 3 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Drained the tank, filled with a bit of petrol, drained that, then put REDEX and petrol in the car and left running for 20-30 mins. It was a bit coughy for a while then seemed ok. Parked the car up at work and now it won\'t start - it\'ll turn over grand but that\'s it. What the fix now? It\'s a 1990 205. injectors/spark plugs/new car?
  • Meguilar's - any observations 5 Nov 2003 (Forum)
This, the Gold version polish, sells in my local store for the equiv of £8.67 for about 300 ml vs good old-fashioned Turtle Wax which runs £2.47 equiv for the same amount. Both are US imported. The former claims to be the duck's guts but it's only wax after all and very expensive. I'm wondering whether I should treat my new car to it and if so what benefits can I expect, or just stick with the tried and true.

  • Peugeot 306 2.0D 28 Oct 2003 (Forum)
I'm looking for a used car under £7k to take me, the missus, bikes and junk up and down motorways at the weekend. It needs to be cheap to run, comfy on motorways, have ABS, Air Con and 5 doors. I've seen quite a few 306 2.0 Meridian's with about 35k - 45k on them at a Car Supermarket. Can anyone let me know if these diesel's are a bad/good buy?
  • Sudden Battery Death 17 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Sudden Battery Death One Sat. morning my daughter's Scenic battery was "dead". It is well used for commuting and family run-about, and a recent holiday in Norway, and never an inkling of weakness. The battery, original 4 yr old FULMEN wouldn't take charge or deliver power. Kaput!! This isn't a friendly way to expire.
