  • Nissan Almera (2000 - 2006) - Pain dealer servicing 5 Jul 2008 (Forum)
I had a "minor" service carried out on my car yesterday and they also replaced the rear brake pads ... cost £236 and they also stuck in a fuel additive £12.50 which to me is 2 bags of coal ... They didn't ask me if I had any running probs and Almera's are not known for injector fouling + I only had less than half a tank of juice to which to add the ad.
  • Ever had an unlucky car 26 Jun 2008 (Forum)
A colleague bought a 1 year old Vectra about three weeks ago. So far the folowing has occurred: 1. Developed a fuel leak - back to dealer for repairs. 2. Rolled back into office wall while manoevering - parking sensors now installed. 3. Garage door fell against car while being moved - knocked off door mirror and damaged door skin - quotes for repair awaited. 4.
  • Sneaky filling station 19 May 2008 (Forum)
Local station (Total branded) has 6 diesel pumps. 4 seem to dispense Total "Excellium" which is 128.9p per litre. Fortunately I read the unit price on the LCD dsplay before I started dispensing fuel. I jib at paying 123.9 but I wonder how many other people check the unit cost per litre on the pump before they start filling their tank? Does the garage really expect that much demand for premim diesel or do they rely on people just filling their tank without checking the price?

  • What's your motoring prediction after 20 years? 17 Mar 2008 (Forum)
.. on British motoring scenario? This is what I think: With rising cost of fuel + more penalty for larger cars + high cost of living + not that bright economy will result in people buying smaller & smaller cars. What do you think about multi-car families? Will their number grow or shrink?
  • "Darling to increase car purchase tax to £2K ?" 12 Mar 2008 (Forum)
In this article a 'Senior Treasury Official' is quoted as saying "People don't take much account of the cost of car tax and fuel when buying a car, it is the price sticker in the showroom that makes the difference". Truly scary isn't it that people so totally ignorant and out of touch with reality are governing us? No doubt this guy enjoys the use of a chauffeur driven car, paid for by US!!

  • Volkswagen Golf V (2004 - 2008) - Recommend me a decent cycle carrier 29 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Considered a towbar based rack (i have no towbar yet) but fittment of a towbar to this car is so complicated. Roofbars impact fuel economy and could possibly risk scratching my paintwork. Which leaves a cycle rack..... Comments appreciated.
  • Road tax and CO2 for older cars? 19 Aug 2007 (Forum)
I was just reading an article near the back of Autocar this week by James Ruppert. He was talking about a change to the VAT fuel scale charges - what is this? I ask because it starts off about road tax and then goes on about VAT and it didnt seem clear to me what he was on about but maybe I just missed the boat. What has VAT got to do with road tax?
  • Nissan Qashqai Road Test 27 Jul 2007 (Forum)
As people's opinions are being turned against SUV's, I guess it is surprising that there are so many buyers for a car which would seem to be the worst of both worlds - ie appearing to be an SUV, but not. I do quite fancy the 2L diesel auto with 4WD drive, though its fuel consumption will probably kill that idea.
  • cops on a purge a6 18 May 2007 (Forum)
i was going through loughborough yesterday afternoon and parked up just after the alan moss roundabout was a white van with 2 cameras pointing out the back, i drove on toward the layby and a cop was pulling vehicles over , upon inspection i noticed vans, one had DVLA another had fuel testing written on the side and for good measure two cops on 2x1,s (motorbikes) to catch the chavs who would panic and do a nigel mansell toward derby, it must cost 1000s to set something like that up

Easy to fix and what sort of price are we looking at?
  • VW Lupo 24 Mar 2007 (Forum)
I was just looking at my auctionview stored searches, and saw VW Lupo Diesel. I must have logged it because it has good fuel economy, I clicked it to see, and there is 1 available in Edinburgh soon. It is 1.4 tdi RHD 2004 I looked it up and it is 64 mpg I seem to recall a German model which Clarkson said did 94 mpg ? Can anyone tell me which one and why we didn't get the model over here?
  • BMW 840i vs Jag XK8 6 Feb 2007 (Forum)
No, I've not gone insane, and please no-one crow on about massive fuel bills etc.etc. However, anyone got any rational thoughts on which of the above they'd go for? 4.4litre 840i coming in at £7000 and mega mile XK8 about £8500. I fancy the 840 as a big car for not alot of cash.
  • Diesel Engine Noise 3 Jan 2007 (Forum)
A subject I wanted to discuss for a while was why are some identical diesels more noisey at idle than others ? My A4 TDI 130 performs well, gets a good deal of hard motorway work and returns good fuel consumption, but tends to be noisier at idle hot or cold than other 'same-engined' cars such as other A4's or Passats etc. Why does the readership think this is ? Are diesel cars driven very gently less noisy ?
  • correct name of pipe/hose - Mk2 Golf 27 Dec 2006 (Forum)
There is a rubberpipe/hose that runs from a nipple under the carb ( do Diesels have a carb ?) to a nipple on the non injector side of the cylinder, its leaking fuel and corroded. does any one know the correct name for this bit, and more importantly where I can buy piece of it about half a metere long, its not reinforced by the way, and its just a push fit, its quite a small bore.
  • subaru advice please 14 Nov 2006 (Forum)
I have already spent a lot of time researching and reading comments from like minded people on here. I am willing to accept relatively low fuel consumption and high(er) running costs. Is there anything I might not be aware of? Thanks in advance.
  • Road pricing - pay as you drive 10 Nov 2006 (Forum)
This idea is often trumpeted as an "alternative" way to pay for road use, implying that if adopted it would replace other forms of pricing, eg the road fund licence or fuel tax. On that basis, probably many people would support it. But is that really how it will work? Are motorists in Norfolk for example now to be the subjects of a pilot scheme to be given exemption from road tax?
