  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 02 2.0 (auto) diesel misfiring 16 Aug 2008 (Forum)
I averaged 46 mpg over the trip to Spain, running at 80 ish all the way so there cannot be much wrong with the car, but it would be nice to figure out what the problem is once and for all Any ideas?

  • Vauxhall Astra H (2004 - 2009) - 1.3CDTi engine - awful lag on moving away?? 1 May 2008 (Forum)
Just curious about this! Work's pool Astra 1.3 CDTi is used mostly for short runs, occasionally for a proper run of 80 miles or so. I only use it for the short run into town and back to visit some of our customers. 4 mile round trip so not doing the best for it but anyway... Point is I find it is awful when pulling away!
  • Most Abused or Cherished Company Car? 17 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Basically it is run to the letter of the law as per the owners manual and even has a small rubber mat to protect the carpet on the transmission tunnel between the rear seats. However, it runs no better than the Octavia and always seems to be in and out of the dealer for teething problems.
  • Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - Overfueling 1993 1800cc petrol 25 Nov 2007 (Forum)
(fuel pouring down the inlet) I changed the throttle body and SPI unit (a spare off a scrapped one I have thank goodness), which ran ok until it got hot when the same happened which lead me to realise the cause of the overfueling was actually a temp sender that was sending the wrong info to unit and hence causing the overfuel. Once this was changed everything has run okish since, with no breakdowns. However I am convinced it is now running far far too rich as mpg is not great and its a little 'lumpy' when hot and doesn't idle particularly smoothly, and sometimes pops a little on the overrun.
  • Zafira diesel engine doesn't like a run 27 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Basically I have a 2004 2.0 DTi Zafira, I have always been concerned about the fuel consumption figures compared to the Vauxhall stated 35mpg urban and 53mpg extra urban, this has been confirmed by the vauxhall dealership (they managed 41MPG on a run of 100 miles at 58-60mph) due to this they agreed with me and have had the vehicle in about 10 times and changed about 10 different things, this has had no effect. This got passed over to Vauxhall technical and they said this figure is exceptable.
  • Ford diesel engine needs replacing 5 Dec 2006 (Forum)
This cost £120 because the Mondeo has too many miles to be within the warranty. The car ran better for a while but then started its tricks again, like really rough running and knocking, like a bag of bolts. I went back to the dealer with it and they said it had a faulty injector, so I asked them to replace the injector. This cost £393. Again the car ran ok for a time but then started running really bad and knocking.
  • O2 XDA Exec and sat nav 1 Nov 2005 (Forum)
The Exec has a similar capability and in addition the screen swivels round to fold flat similar to a tablet pc. Well, I just couldnt resist it and got one last week. I intend to run Tom Tom on it as well so that I have one machine that does everything that I can use in the office, car etc. However my enquiries suggest that PDAs with Windows Mobile v5 are very new and that Tom Tom or other systems are not yet upgraded to run on these machines.
  • Astra mystery coolant leak 26 Jun 2005 (Forum)
There doesn't appear to be any oil in the coolant in the expansion tank (which runs dry very quickly) but the plastic has turned a horrible brown colour, but has been like that since I got the car. Has anyone seen this problem before, and could help me out?
  • Astra diesel (Isuzu) cold starting probs 19 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Now, car starts on the button. The other night it was -4oC and chick, brmm, just like that. Oh, and no smoke and poor running from cold either now.
  • Optimax test results 8 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Some time ago, I promised ( see http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?v=e&t=18620&m=187069 )to run an experiment running my car on Optimax for the edification of the backroom gang. I've complained often enough that I've never seen a scientific test of "quality" vs supermarket fuels; I offer the next best thing, an utterly unscientific test.
  • Cossie problems 31 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Hi all, long story...My Sapphire Cosworth is suffering from lack of power and is backfiring through the exhaust. I have only had the car for a few weeks, and it was running beautifully initially. It first developed the symptoms on the way into the main ford dealers for its 60,000 ml service, and by the time I had reached the garage, a journey of 35 miles the car was really struggling - not accelerating, loss of power, running roughly, etc.
  • Criteria for a Motorway Patrol Car 20 Oct 2003 (Forum)
The reason I ask is, I would imagine cost would be high on the list; I've seen a lot of Range Rovers, Discos, the odd Nissan Patrol, Terrano II, Isuzu Trooper and on one occasion even a Merc ML - What is the justification for running a 4X4 as a motorway patrol car over say a Vx 3.0 Omega estate or a Volvo T5 V70 for example? I would imagine both the latter would be much better high speed pursuit vehicles and be able to carry pretty much the same equipment/load as most of the above mentioned 4X4's and be equally capable at a motorway RTA and I'd imagine that they may be cheaper to run too.
  • Can an S-Class be run on a budget? 18 Apr 2003 (Forum)
I've just bought a Mercedes S280 1997 4-speed with 95K and FMBSH to 88K. Short service due shortly. Can an S280 be run on a budget? I'm aware of Euro Car Parts and German-Swedish for parts. I've been told that cheap tyres are a false economy on this heavy tyre-wearing car. But what is the detailed service schedule on an S280?
  • Mondeo Cold start 27 Feb 2003 (Forum)
I have just purchased a 1999 V-plate Mondeo TD but I am finding it difficult to start first thing in the mornings, the engine turns and seems to splutter but cuts out, this will go on a good few more times as I crank the engine when finally it will spring to life and fires up very much like a flooded engine with plenty of smoke from the exhaust... Once running it clears itself and runs perfect and clean, its also worth pointing out that through the rest of the day it doesn't seem to be a real problem to start only on the initial start up in the mornings..
