  Passes an A4 Avant (53 reg 1.9tdi) yesterday towing a two axle horse trailer with a large horse (a lot of the horse showed over the door) inside. Would he be over-weight - it was being driven very gingerly but did have a proper matching number plate on the trailer so I guess he does it regularly.

  Full service and repair history. Original clutch, exhaust etc. Friends advise me to fit a towbar to it and use it to get used to towing a caravan in a vehicle I know well. Given the age of the car I was reluctant to put the added strain of towing onto it, but I was going to virtually give it away anyway, so nothing to lose really.

  I am just about to look for a second hand car 3 to 5 years old - probably a Toyota Avensis Estate 2.0D4D diesel.  Would buying a car with a tow bar already fitted be a no-no for people, or just another variable to take into account?  My concern would be that towing does put some extra stress on the engine/clutch and good maintenance and sensible driving are important.

  I purchased the following vehicle from Arnold Clark, Nissan, Perth, Dunkeld Road, Perth, PH1 3XJ When fitting a new tow bar, the engineer at my local garage identified the following :- •              The vehicle had previously been fitted with a tow bar....the tow bar socket was in a plastic bag taped to the underside of the vehicle and the left and right tow bar anchors were still in situ.
