Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - good buy ? 22 Oct 2009 (Forum)
its a July 2001 plate Y reg. 1.4 S, Silver, 3 door. its got a gti rear spoiler, gti alloys, r32 front grill and lexus style rear lights. I gave it £130 worth of service, wipers, spark plugs, oil filter, fully snyth, air filter, fuel filter, topped up steering fluid, mended brake light switch under foot brake. 2 owners full service history, 2 keys and plastic key with number on. handbook. cd/radio/tape/ everything works on it. 1st owner had for 3 years - up to 89K miles 2nd owner 4 years, up to 109K miles, all MOTs and tax and service docs, shows had a cam-belt change at 69K all service and mots add up. even the log book was at his home address. £2100.00 seriously such a decent car, no rot, all panels line up, all original underneath, no leaks in boot, or at rear. no leaks from brake pipes, exhaust still got decent life in it. goes like stink for a 1.4, and such a heavy car. wife just said though she skidded today in wet. looked at parkers and it should have abs. -
Inferiority Complex 13 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Got home, checked my car and then discovered that from outside my car looked just like theirs, black inside and out makes it looks like I have dark tinted windows ..... combined with the standard rear spoiler and Lexus style rear lights it look just like a young lads car. If only they knew I was much older, married and had a boot full of groceries?.. -
New car - making a shortlist 28 Feb 2016 (Forum)
Excellent driving position although the dashboard is a bit in-yer-face. Only decent engine is the 2.0 TDCI. Lexus NX300h Lovely inside, high up and comfortable. But I tried the new hybrid and Toyota/Lexus still haven't got rid of the furious revving that comes with even a moderate attempt at acceleration. -
New car suggestions 27 Feb 2025 (Forum)
I can't buy a diesel as I do very short journeys, and I've heard that would affect the dpf. I've looked at some Lexus and Toyotas, but unfortunately ones in my budget have mostly been used as taxis and have fake mileage. I've also been interested in Seat Ibiza/Leon, but apparently they have reliability/maintenance issues. -
Which Sedan have dual or 4 piston brakes, advice.. 1 Nov 2021 (Forum)
Hi all please advice me since i already own 3 cars which are currently either in process of being sold , so for my next car i want to have at least dual or quadriple brake piston calipers , car should at least year 2012/ petrol or diesel i dont mind or hybrid as well, reliability needs to be good, and comfortable seats with at least 4 options to regulate the lumbar support, simular to LEXUS GS year 2012 and up i cant provide pictures here since forum doesnt allow me but "A new front seat features a lower hip point, placing the driver closer to the GS's centre of gravity, and combines optimum holding ability with superlative comfort. -
Ford KA, KA2, KA3 (1996 - 2008) - 1999 1.3 Rusty Spark plug 12 May 2008 (Forum)
Thanks to the info provided that when the top tapered section is removed which I drilled out, the remainder could be removed using a screw thread remover (known as EZ out in the US I belleve) Here is my contribution which might help others: I hopefully prevented all the drilled swarf from going into the cylinder using a "DUM DUM" flexible putty equivqlent which I pushed down the hole before I started drilling. Hopefully all is well now. ( btw my own car is a Lexus Rx 400h which is going really well.) Thanks again. Billy New Sat 7 Apr 01 20:21 Re: Ford Ka - rusty spark plugs - trevor in my experience it is usually the fact that the plug sidewall corrodes very thin and the top of the plug snaps off leaving the threaded part in the head .usually if the broken porcelain is pulled out of the centre of the plug then a splined "easy out" can be tapped into the hole in the centre to remove the remains of the plug without removing the head. -
Honda - Anyone own a Civic type S? 4 Oct 2007 (Forum)
I have also considered a Mondeo 2.0 petrol, but the Honda has the edge on performance (and probably reliability)and I do not need a Mondeo sized vehicle, although my previous Legacy estates were of a similar size. For the next 10 days I am borrowing a lovely Lexus IS SportCross, but it is thirsty and has to be revved hard to perform...only its build quality stands out...performance is lacklustre and spares costly, and I bet I could'nt get one for £5k anyway! -
Waiting lists for cars... 11 Jul 2007 (Forum)
A mate of mine has had a succession of BMW X5 3.0d models and seems to have to order 12 mths in advance and even to be on good terms with the garage to get one..Is this a freak occurence just with this model? I am interested in whether if you go into the average BMW/Audi/Lexus/Merc dealer do they actually have "stock" cars that you could buy there and then or is it all "build to order". I read somewhere that all BMWs were done that way so they never had unsold stock sitting about...hence their famed profitability as a maker...then I read that in Germany BMW punt out a ton of vehs to stock there in all sorts of the usual sales wheezes and indulge in shifting metal like everyone else. -
New car with more poke... Suggestions? 6 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Problem - insurance, as I was caught by a speed camera in 2004 and am not yet 25. Also would have to be parked on street in Bristol at the moment, which is a bit of a pain. Lexus soarer - Looks good, relatively cheap, V8 powered goodness! Like the porsche, a bit old and higher mileage now. Also really hard to find in manual, and I don't really want an auto car. Vauxhall / Holden Monaro - looks a bit pants, nice V8 again, prices still rather high, especially for the most recent model. -
Mazda 3 mini road test 29 Jun 2006 (Forum)
However, there was something appealling about the car, and I would have one of they did a 2.0 auto with a full on spec which included leather, air, cruise, sat nav (in other words a mini luxury car, one size below the Lexus IS220), as it has the external design to justify that idea. -
funny tales of the auto variety 31 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Then he told us how much interest he had had in 'this one' (it was supposedly a private sale) and if I made him a good offer blah blah. Also he had some Lexus lights for it ("if I liked styling and body kits"), it had no stereo and a patchy history and he was selling it because he needed a bigger car (Golf GTi). Not sure what part of the Golf was bigger? -

Car ideas? Family. Low annual mileage with long tr 6 Apr 2022 (Forum)
Looking for inspiration for what car to get. A few years ago we went down do 1 car from 2. Current car is a 15 year old Lexus RX Hybrid which I've had for 7 years. Very comfortable, very quiet, moves when you put your foot down, but leisurely to pootle in. Given its age it has reached the stage where I don't think it's worth keeping up with the maintenance, especially now some pricey chassis related items are expected in the next 12 months. -
Toyota Auris - hybrid or diesel & what MPG to expect 30 Jun 2016 (Forum)
I was thinking of an Auris Hybrid (about 2012), but tbh, the transmission on my current one is a nightmare and I don't really want to repeat that. There's also a 2012 Lexus CT200H (hybrid) which has decent economy - not as good MPG - but I could forgive that for the spec and looks. Would really be appreciated if someone could advise what car I'm likely to get the best MPG out of given my usage. -
Worst Budget Tyre? 17 Feb 2011 (Forum)
The company car drivers say: "your tyres are the most important part of the vehicle as they are the only contact between your car and the ground - only buy the best you can afford" The Lexus owners said: "My IS200 came with those Nankangs and I upgraded to Michelins after nearly skidding into a hedge". But what if money is a problem? What if your not keeping the car long? What if your just pooteling around the town in a Citreon 2CV? -
Another of those - "which car should I choose ?" 25 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Budget: Around £16k My thinking at the moment is: Seat Leon 2.0 TDI BMW 320d Audi A4 20 TDI S line Lexus IS 220d I won't rule out a sports car, as long as the boot is big enough for the kit (which the hardtop convertible SLK is.... shame they cost so much!), so any interesting suggestions there would appreciated. -
Which will last longer? 5 Mar 2007 (Forum)
I know the popular 140 bhp has a narrow power band and the gearing is not all that high ( it needs all it's gears) I have read. The 2.0 diesel 170bhp is supposed to be smoother ( but higher insurance etc). I sat in a Lexus IS 220D sport. It is superbly made and extremely comfortable.I have read that the ride is harsh.I think the rear space is a bit tight. The Audi A4 is nearing the end of it's life span before they do a change ( I love the looks). -
Labour rates top £150 per hour 19 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Mazda has the lowest average labour bills of £44 followed by Nissan, Seat, Fiat and MG Rover on £46. Lexus leads the table with the most expensive average charge of £78 an hour, £1 more than Mercedes, £3 more than Jaguar and £5 more than Porsche. Although initiatives introduced by the European Commission last October were aimed at encouraging cheaper repair and servicing bills, Warranty Direct says labour rates at franchised dealers have increased 8% in the last year and 71% since 2000 -
Skoda Yeti - Skoda Yeti - my thoughts on 10K miles / 1 year 1 Sep 2013 (Forum)
The best MPG was just over 40 mpg and the worst well into the 20's. The car was exceptionally quiet at high speed. I came to the Yeti from a "proper" Lexus and didn't in any way feel short changed in the refinement department. I found the ride a bit unsettled on the motorway. I assumed this was due to the relatively short wheelbase and low profile tyres. -
New Family Car/SUV advice 28 Mar 2023 (Forum)
Audi Q5 (wife choice, might have to go older for budget? Q7 too big and too dear) Lexus RX or NX (unknown to me, is the NX the same size as the 3008 or bigger, RX too dear I think). Seat Tarraco (really not sure about the look of this one, bit dull, cant bring myself to consider it) Skoda Kodiaq (similar to the Tarraco and is it too big?)
