New car suggestions - nelmo

Hello everyone.

I need some suggestions on buying a new car please. I have been driving an 06 Aygo for 4 years now. An absolute pleasure it has been. Zero issues and great mpg. Unfortunately I am having to upgrade due to lack of boot space, but I'm struggling so much with finding a car that's just as reliable and works for me within my budget of 6/7k. Really sucks. I've been searching for a year.

I have never had any issues with the Aygo, and not sure if I need to lower my expectations for an upgrade, as every new car I look at has some issue or the other. As it is an upgrade, I'm looking for a car that also doesn't look too bad (so no Yaris or Mitsubishi colt etc).

Can anyone please offer me some suggestions? I am very tired of looking and don't know if there is even a car out there for me. I feel like pulling my hair out. I can't buy a diesel as I do very short journeys, and I've heard that would affect the dpf. I've looked at some Lexus and Toyotas, but unfortunately ones in my budget have mostly been used as taxis and have fake mileage. I've also been interested in Seat Ibiza/Leon, but apparently they have reliability/maintenance issues. Apparently Mercedes A180 is also a bad idea. French engines aren't great, according to my dad, and he says German cars are heavy on the maintenance? So that's basically all cars out there lol. I also don't mind if it's Manual or Auto.

Thank you in advance!

Automatic cars are invariably more expensive than an equivalent manual. So if you don’t need one, don’t consider those. As for boot space the Aygo is tiny so it should be easy to find a bigger boot but how big do you need? Not all German cars are expensive to run. VW and allied brands will be no dearer than other makes to maintain.

If I was looking for a reliable car around that budget I’d consider Japanese models. The Honda Jazz is surprisingly spacious inside, or a Toyota Auris if you want a bit bigger. Suzuki have a good range too. I wouldn’t rule out VW group cars. The Skoda Fabia estate for example has a large boot for a small car.

Thank you very much for your suggestions. I was looking at hatchbacks mainly. Did take a look at the VW golf but not sure if that's a VW you would be referring to

Stick with what you have (it gives you pleasure, zero issues and great mpg), save your 6/7k and consider attachng a roofbox to your car for extra storage space. (i)

Thanks for your suggestion. I would do that but my mum wouldn't be pleased

New shape Aygo no better for boot space?

Auris (estate an option for much bigger boot), avoid the MMT automated manual box in the 07/13 model, if you want auto Auris from 2013 on did away with the MMT box, standard petrol versions are less likely to have been taxis than hybrids, your budget should rule out all but the oldest and highest mileage ex taxis anyway.

You don't go far wrong with Toyotas as you know from experience unfortunately that once well kept secret is no longer hence good used versions can no longer be found cheap, check for believable evidence of servicing, these cars have always been bought by certain types who neglect them, Toyotas stand neglect better than most hence why they attract the type.

Honda Civic with the 1.8 or 2.0 litre (timing chain) petrol engine another contender, some models come on low profile tyres, try and find one on sensible cheaply sourced 16" tyres.

The Toyota Yaris would be safe from being a clocked taxi (too small) but there is quite a price premium on them because of the reputation for food reliability.

A better value option might be the Suzuki Swift - £7k would get you into a 4-5 year old one and they should be just as dependable as the Yaris. I've found Suzuki dealers to be pretty good too. If you liked the go-kart like handling and willing revving engine of the Aygo, the Swift is much like that to drive but bigger.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately boot size of the swift is very similar to my Aygo. It's too small for my needs, although it's a good car.

I'll take a look at the civic. Thanks

I had a 1.8 Civic. Great car but it was a 2012 year car and suffered heavy oil use as the mileage rose. Honda sorted this from 2013 and they were fine after that. The later model after that with the 1.0 and 1.5 engines are not so good.

You mention the Golf but at your budget you would get a newer car if you consider a Seat Leon or Skoda Octavia which share the Golf’s mechanicals. They are all good cars but unlikely to be as bulletproof as a Honda or Toyota.

Suzuki Baleno is the next one up from the Swift and good value. Likewise the Skoda Rapid and Seat Toledo. Possibly even a Fiat Tipo. The Skoda, Seat and Fiat are all quite basic cars so don't cost a fortune to run.

If electric is an option, there are plenty of Nissan Leafs out there within your budget.

Some amazing suggestions. Thank you!

Where roughly are you located? I’ll take a wee look for local options. It’s all very well us making recommendations, but if you can’t find one it doesn’t help much. Is that budget set in stone or can it creep up for the right car? Do you have a driveway? Do you do regular long runs or is it all local?

You say you are having to change because of the lack of boot space in the Aygo, but also that you have been looking for a year now. Sounds like you can manage with the Aygo's boot space, after all you have been doing just that for a year since deciding it was too small!.

As it is an upgrade, I'm looking for a car that also doesn't look too bad (so no Yaris or Mitsubishi colt etc).

As for this, not really much point in mentioning it because beauty is in the eye of the beholder and none of us know what you consider a good looking car.

Given how long you have been looking for a new car, I'd have thought if a bigger boot was that important, you'd have (wisely) concluded before now that practicality, reliability and comfort are of rather more importance than looks, especially on a relatively small budget.

But for around £7k you could get into an early 4th gen (2017 on) Kia Rio. Quite a simple car mechanically with a n/a 1.25 or 1.4, very reliable (if not quite on a par with a Yaris) and the boot has a volume of 325 litres (more than double that of your Aygo).

I can also manage with one arm, but I'd rather have two. See how silly you sound now?

Sorry, but if you would have read my full post you would have noticed that I wrote I have to use the back seats as extra boot space. This is not convenient for anyone, and I have to make multiple trips to places, if carrying passengers. It's either passengers or luggage. When did I ever say it worked for me? Just because I have made it work (with a lot of inconvenience) does not mean that I should continue to struggle for the rest of my life. You're very rude and judgemental. Please don't bother responding, as I don't want to hear anything else pessimistic from you. And you calling me unwise was uncalled for. It was a simple post asking for car suggestions; I didn't need a lecture. You must be such a joy to be around.

Thats OK Paul, I am (unlike the OP it seems) not overly sensitive and have quite thick skin, certainly when it comes to public forums/social media!

I have to admit I sometimes am guilty of not fully reading a post before answering. However, in this case I have gone over your opening post 3 times and cannot see where you mention using the rear seats as boot space?.

In your original post, you paint a picture of being entirely happy with the Aygo other than the boot space, but the above comment paints a rather different picture.

You're very rude and judgemental.

Forum member and ex motor trader SLO generously offered (nearly 10 hours prior to your outburst at me) to give up some of his free time to look for potential purchases within your area (I would also have looked) and you have completely ignored his offer. So you might want to stop and think before accusing others of being rude.

Locking this now. The OP has been given some suggestions, it's up to them whether to take them forward or not.
