  • VW Golf 140 TDI 2004 Plate. - Golf GT 140 TDI - Hot Start Problem 23 Aug 2013 (Forum)
When the engines warm, it doesn’t start very easily, in fact it turns over for a few seconds before it eventually starts, almost like it’s stalled or the batteries flat. There’s various views and opinions surrounding this, which are available on the internet. A number of views on the internet point to glow plugs as a possibility. My garage chap, ran diagnostics on the car and it returned a fault with ‘Glow Plugs’.
  • Vauxhall Zafira - Zafira Won't Start - Help! 29 May 2013 (Forum)
They seem to think that the fuel pump is working (they checked the current and it pumped) They also disconnected the battery for an hour to see if the ECU needed resetting.  Non of these things have worked.
  • Saab 9-5 1.9 TDi Vector Diesel Estate - New Car 3 Jan 2013 (Forum)
It would be nice if it didn't have a boot lip to make it easier putting things in (and the dogs to get in) I don't really think Diesel is suitable for him anymore as his regular driving is barely 10 miles a day (divided over a weeks worth of driving) and the I'm concerned the current car is not that far away from having some major service costs due to very short journeys as its recently eaten a couple of batteries due to literately driving to the shops 1mile away and back again. As well as his 2 requirements I'd also like it to be Smaller, Economical, Automatic, Parking Sensors & Cruise Control.
  • Ford Focus Saloon 51 plate 1.6 zetec - Annoying idle problem 19 Nov 2012 (Forum)
I took the idle control valve off and gave it a good clean in petrol, I had a spare throttle position sensor, tried that and it still behaved the same. I tried disconnecting the battery overnight for the computer to remap etc, no good. When the revs do come right the best I can describe it is as a quick gurgly noise from somewhere in the engine bay. Has anyone got any ideas what might be causing the revs to stick and I'm pretty sure it is not a sticking throttle cable.
  • 2002 VW Passat 2.0L 130bhp AZM Engine (petrol), Cylinder 3 Misfire, out of ideas 4 Jul 2012 (Forum)
I have completed the following checks and run out of ideas: 1) Cleared the codes and restarted engine. 2) Replaced the spark plugs with new ones. 3) Old spark plugs were in good condition with no oil, no deposits and the electrodes in good condition. 4) Checked HT lead condition and found no corrosion, a tight fitting cap and no damage to cable. 5) Earthed the HT lead and have strong spark when engine turns over. 6) Checked the injector electrical connections with a bulb tester and all is fine. 7) Removed the fuel rail and extracted cylinder 3 injector. 8) Performed a visual inspection of injector with all looking good and no blockages at the jets. 9) Tested the injector on the bench using a 12V battery to ensure it opens and closes correctly. 10) Replaced the injector in the rail and turned the engine over to check for blockages, with all injectors operating. 11) Swapped cylinder 3 and 4 injectors (misfire still on cylinder 3, no change) 12) Inspected fuel and air connections and ensured no leaks. 13) Checked the engine oil condition with no evidence of water contamination (head gasket) Any ideas would be most welcome
  • Recoendation on supermini below 5000?? 25 May 2012 (Forum)
I'm currently driving a 53 reg Honda jazz altomatic closing up to 100000 miles, it serves a really good car over the past 2 and a half year, only problems occurred so far is some battery flat, failed alternator and rusty exhaust box which fall of in the middle of motorway. I'm planning to change to a newer car and have serveral questions, my budget is roughly around 4k-5k, this include my car to be part exchange.
  • Medium Automatic Required in place of Hybrid. 19 May 2012 (Forum)
I think if they want to change the car, get something a bit cheaper and conventional  ie one without a motor and a battery but of the same size.     I don't know what though. It has to be reliable but none of this clutchless manual variety (they had one in an Aygo and they really did not understand how it worked and it needed a new unit after 40k - i wonder why) . i had one in a diesel Yaris and I thought it was awful but thankfully I had no problems with it but decided to sell before its 3rd birthday.
  • 2003 Focus 1.8 TDCI - FRP Sensor change 21 Oct 2011 (Forum)
Hi all, my 2003 Focus 1.8 TDCI 100ps developed a non-start problem, it struggled to start but once it did ran perfectly, this continued for a couple of months until it cut out decelarating into an uphill bend and refused to restart. After looking around here is what i did, Battery change (was overdue) Cam + Crank position sensor change Fuel filter drain, test, new one installed (No sign of metalic particles) Visual inspection of Looms, Con checks to earth, visual of all fuel lines Transposed start relays, voltage checks at Eng fuse box Replaced 2X damaged glow plugs After all this still a no start so decided to throw it into ford to get live cranking data and codes read, Codes came back as - P2288 Injector control pressure Above Epct.
  • 53 Plate Honda Civic 1.7 cdti (manual) - Honda Civic Woe's; Starting & How to tow ? 15 Sep 2011 (Forum)
Today I went out to "listen" as she started the car, andfor the first time I can ever re-call the car did not start and still refuses to start; upon turning the key there is a very feint hearted attempt at a click,  I have checked fuses, the battery seems ok as the heater, lights and wipers work ok.  I'm no mechanic but given the noise she heard, the lack of a clear click and the apparent abundance of power, would I be right in thinking that it might be either the starter motor or solenoid ?.
  • Ford Mondeo TDCI 130 Ghia X - Mk3 Mondeo TDCI 130 Catestrophic Engine Failure 1 Sep 2010 (Forum)
My wife thankfully managed to tow me home (that was a experience, she's never towed before!) and i've disconnected the battery overnight to see if it resets the issue. I've called in a favour it's having a diagnostic check on Wednesday 1st Sept, BUT i really could do with finding out sooner - any advice or guidance would be appreciated... i've run out of patience and money!
  • Honda Accord UK (1998 - 2003) - 2000 oxygen sensor faliure. 5 Aug 2010 (Forum)
I know from posts by others in here that this model has a reputation for eating O2 sensors so i hoped someone may have some experience here. One more thing i noticed, he has added a new wire under the bonnet! It runs from the battery neg terminal to what looks like the engine block or clutch housing area and is wrapped around the existing earth strap (i think thats what it is) which is very chunky. What might this be for? It is actually two wires with a crimped type connector on either end.
  • Sat Nav software updates 28 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Then there were the follow on Garmin, stand alone units  (in the follow on cars)  - You got one free map update on purchase - then it was back to paying for updates and the camera POI`s - though i never bothered.  Built in batteries too - and little hard drives whirring away as they covered Europe. I Wonder how much it would cost to cover the world though with those £130 - for - the - UK - discs. £1,000? Fortunately Google brought a bit of competition and Nokia bought Navteq.
  • Alfa Romeo GT - Rejection New Lease Car - Bulkhead Weld Failure 27 May 2010 (Forum)
    4) Last time the dealer investigated this issue, I had multiple electrical problems due to the dashboard been removed, including flat battery. 5) I've lost confidence in the car, and suspect I will be making multiple trips to the dealer once the fix has been performed.   Any suggestions as to what to do. The car is leased from Fiat/Alfa, the dealer has been good enough to provide a car, but at the end of the day I am leasing a GT.
  • ford focus 2001 - front coil springs, shock absorbers problems 22 May 2010 (Forum)
she just found out that she needs the front coil springs replaced, a pair of front shock absorbers done, both front brake discs and pads, a tracking check and also a new battery.  We were quoted 713.55 by the garage which we cant afford to pay so its stuck there at the moment.  I thought id see if i can find a cheaper alternative by buying the parts myself online which came to just over 200 and got a quote from a mobile mechanic to do all the work for around 150.
  • Peugeot 307 SW (2002 - 2008) - 03 2.0 HDi SW SE - Non starter 9 Jan 2010 (Forum)
More recently I have had glow plugs tested to be informed all OK, checks for air in the fuel system and the battery replaced. The breakdown guys believe it to be the low pressure pump in the fuel tank however garage says otherwise. How is it the breakdown mechanics can spray ether into the air intake pipe and it fires up?

  • Renault Megane (1999 - 2002) - 99 1.4 Failing to start 31 Oct 2009 (Forum)
I went out and tried, putting foot flat on floor to clear flooding didn't work. Jumped it to my car to help battery and eventually it started. It turns over and over and doesn't try to fire but it then seemed to try as you let go of the key so I tried short attempts just one turn and after a lot of attempts it started.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 1999 2.0HDi - Engine diagnostic light coming on 1 Apr 2009 (Forum)
I just turn the key to the off position, wait 3 or 4 sec and start again without problem. First time the Peugeot dealer advises me to change battery connectors and the diesel filter, and if it wouldn?t fix the problem I should change the injector n°2 and n°3 because the computer was accusing them. After connectors and filter changed the problem was still persisting.
  • Rover 200 (1995 - 1999) - 1998 1.4 - 214 overheating - help! 5 Dec 2008 (Forum)
After putting some petrol in it, however it wouldn't start and we had to push it back home. We then changed the starter motor on it and charged the battery. This seemed to do the trick. This morning however, my temp gauge has taken to jumping up and down between half way and the top. It doesn't seem to do this so much when I am going down hill or when I take my foot off the gas.
