Is Diesel a false economy? 3 Jun 2011 (Forum)
Ive been wondering this for a while, with fuel prices rising more and more people switching to Diesel cars, indeed for the first time new car sales has had Diesels in the majority in the UK, but is it a false economy? In almost every case brand new the diesel variant of a car will cost more than its petrol equivalent, even with better fuel economy and lower VED it can take 1-3 years (even on medium-high mileage) to break even and then begin to see profit. -

Volkswagen Polo III (2000 - 2002) - 00 1.0 Engine timing 20 Jan 2010 (Forum)
After waiting around for some minutes i got bored and i thought that it might have something to do with my fuel tank, so i filled it up wid some Fuel Injection Fluid, Car was working fine after that. So i also decided to check the engine anyways and i took it to a garage and he sprayed some spray thingy on my throttle boddy i think it was on my engine and it was like a circle thing that flaped up and down there was some grease on there so he cleaned it and sprayed it, car was working even better but on the rev meter my Throttle used to just spring up and down losly like there was no control. the rev meter just used to flip up wen it hit 20 or 30, i ignored that and started driving the garage guy sed it will be fine give it some time. -
Volkswagen Passat (1988 - 1997) - 96 2.0 Poor running, hesitation. 5 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Along with the problem I've also noticed a drop off in performance and throttle response but interestingly fuel consumption doesn't seem to have been adversely affected. Any help/suggestions gratefully received. Thanks in advance, Chris -
Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 2000 2.0 HDI With Zero acceleration 9 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Some suggestions and help would be very much appreciated, I'm thinking its electrical but at the same time it could be a fuel problem, low pressure pump? If I take that out can the filter be cleaned or is it a sealed unit? If it's an electrical fault where do i begin looking? Thanks, alec. -
Go back to petrol: would you? 3 Apr 2007 (Forum)
) * It may cost less to service a petrol engine. * A petrol engine may be less likely to fail expensively in later life. * At current fuel prices, the difference in fuel cost between a 31 mpg petrol car and a 43 mpg diesel is about 3.1p, or about £1,600 over 50,000 miles. (This, of course, takes no account of different costs for servicing, insurance, VED or depreciation.) -
Volvo S80 battery problem 1 May 2006 (Forum)
I have a volvo S80. About 4 months ago my wife left the hazard lights on after she had run out of fuel. After a few hours of waiting for help the battery ran out. When she eventually managed to get the fuel, unbeknown to her that the batterry had ran out she tried countless times to start the engine with the result that the engine was flooded with fuel. -
Calibra slow to drop to idle 16 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Stranger still, although it doesn't do it when it is on a cold engine, it doesn't always do on a hot one either. Now the weird bit, having the fuel computer read out on instant consumption, I have noticed that the deceleration fuel cut off doesn't always work (ie. you don't always get 999.9 mpg). Now I know that as you approach the idle speed you won't see this anyway. -
Choosing an automatic Family Vehicle 20 Feb 2024 (Forum)
I'm having difficulty choosing which vehicle I want to transport me, my partner and one child (no plans for any more). My wishes are: automatic, reliability, fuel efficient, nice interior and not too boring to drive. So far my short list includes: Mazda CX 5 (2020/2021 model), Peugeot 2008 (2024) and Skoda Kamiq (2024). Would love to have your feedback and if you can think of anything else, I would love to hear! -

Drove wife, dog and self and a very full car off to the Moselle region of germany, including a stop south of brussels on the way, and back via Bruges, Just ona 1000 miles all told. Fuel consumption was about 34 mpg, traffic horrendous most of the time, except for driving across luxembourg.) Car as comfy as ever and zero problems, saw 2 other Korandos in Germany and Belgium, which is 2 more than I have seen on essex roads. -
2003 Ford Fiesta 1.4 diesel - Mot failure 25 Mar 2023 (Forum)
Just to ask what would the likely cost of repairs for brake pipe excessively corroded nearside and offside front to rear pipe . Brakes imbalance across the rear axle. Fuel pipe chafing on top of filter . Monitor and repair advisories play in steering rack (slight play in both sides power steering noisy ) 2 tyres worn on edge . Considering it’s 20 years old and 145000 mileage if it’s worth it. -
Volkswagen Arteon - Petrol or Diesel Arteon 24 Sep 2021 (Forum)
Hi All, I am after some advice, I currently have a 2.0 R-Line 190 TSI on an 18 plate but my commute has now changed to 160 mile daily trip so I was thinking about adding a bit of money and trading in for the 2.0 TDI 190 as the fuel economy is at least on paper a lot better. I currently average around 44-47mpg each trip. Is this worth the swap? Is there any downfall to owning a diesel currently? Thanks in advance. -
Why are electric cars so expensive? 4 Sep 2020 (Forum)
I cannot understand why an ordinary hatchback can cost £15,000 but the electric equivalent is £30,000.On the £15,000 petrol engined cars there is the engine, gearbox, catalytic converter, fuel tank, pipe work etc that is missing on the electric car. This makes the petrol car at least £5,000 less, then add in the electric motor, batteries and control gear would only add £10,000 to the price so an electric car should be around the £20,000 mark to buy.I think we are being ripped off somewhere? -

2001 Renault master 2.8 di - Rrenault master smoking 13 Aug 2020 (Forum)
Hi Everyone, Trying to get my van ready for its MoT in September and its smoking on start up and continues to smoke for 10 minutes or so. My thought was that its the cold start feeding too much fuel. I wouldn't be normally be bothered but I know the MoT testers have been very strict on any visual smoke. I'd be grateful if someone has some idea of what may be going on. -
Nissan Note 2016 1.2 Not Turbo charged - Chattering Sound from Engine 24 Jul 2020 (Forum)
FSH Chattering / chipmunk sound when accelerating without changing down, so engine under a bit of a load - e.g. when going up an incline. SWMBO fills up at nearest petrol station which is a Tesco so not the best fuel. Occasionally she fills with Momentum 99. Any ideas please. -

And will your date be impressed by a driverless car while you sit back twiddling with the navigation system ? Has there ever been a better time to drive than now ? Fuel is cheaper than bottled water, the roads are empty and I’m enjoying the MOT holiday on my 17 year old Audi. Brilliant ! -

They are nothing but irritating gimmicks, just another example of technology doing what few people want done. The fuel saving is minimal, and is offset by increased wear on the starter circuit. Something else to give trouble and expense. I switch the device off before every journey, and it has become as natural as putting on my seat belt.
