  • '96 Ranger Sputters at 50 Degrees 30 Dec 2002 (Forum)
It is not every time, but about once every 5 or 6 times from a stop. It did this once and blew a fuse for the fuel pump. I'd like to be as prepared as possible before I bring it in to the shop. Thanks in advance

  • To chip or not to chip 8 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Has anyone in the backroom had their car 'chipped' Was it worth the money? Does it use more fuel? Why don't manufacturers offer chipped versions, or hane switchable versions, performance / economy mode, bit like auto boxes. If you have chipped, have you told your insurance, if Yes, how much extra are they charging you?
  • The Motorists Champion 3 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Congestion charging for buses, new roads for London and the man himself leading a rally in Trafalgar Square protesting about fuel duty, screaming "Can't pay, won't pay" through a megaphone? Maybe we've misjudged him. The man's a closet Petrol Head, just waiting for the politically oppotune moment to show his true colours and seize power as The Motorist's Champion.
  • Diagnostics. 17 May 2002 (Forum)
A friend has a Ford Fiesta 1.3 that won't start. It stinks of petrol and must be over fueling. My question is this: I'd like to recomend the Tune-up guy from Southampton to visit her house and do the job. (Her AA doesn't cover Homestart) However if it's a weird and complex sensor fault will he be able to locate the problem without the diagnostic kit?
  • New Range Rover Diesel 24 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Given that it weighs about 2 tons, has four-wheel drive, a slush box and a diesel, it accelerated quite briskly. I don't suppose the fuel consumption is that good though.

But anyone with a German high performance car or a turbocharged SAAB or Volvo should have been seeing some serious improvements both to performance and fuel economy. Have you? HJ
  • Renault 1.6 16v lumpy idle 23 Oct 2001 (Forum)
It doesnt sound like its misfiring but the thing can be felt shaking through the whole car, and you can visibly see it move on its mountings with the bonnet open! It goes like stink and is great on fuel, has only done 11000miles and is otherwise fine. Just wish it would idle smoothly. Anyone else experienced this?
  • Electric Cars 22 Sep 2001 (Forum)
Hi, I'd like to buy an electric powered, or dual-fuel (maybe gas turbine / elec) small car. Though it would be ideal for typical local usage around town or commuting, especially as my pregnant wife soon won't be able to cycle as usual! Does anyone recommend a particular place to start searching (ok, I tried here first)?
  • Choosing an automatic Family Vehicle 20 Feb 2024 (Forum)
I'm having difficulty choosing which vehicle I want to transport me, my partner and one child (no plans for any more). My wishes are: automatic, reliability, fuel efficient, nice interior and not too boring to drive. So far my short list includes: Mazda CX 5 (2020/2021 model), Peugeot 2008 (2024) and Skoda Kamiq (2024).  Would love to have your feedback and if you can think of anything else, I would love to hear!
  • SsangYong Korando - A short continental tour 4 Jul 2023 (Forum)
Drove wife, dog and self and a very full car off to the Moselle region of germany, including a stop south of brussels on the way, and back via Bruges, Just ona 1000 miles all told. Fuel consumption was about 34 mpg, traffic horrendous most of the time, except for driving across luxembourg.)  Car as comfy as ever and zero problems, saw 2 other Korandos in Germany and Belgium, which is 2 more than I have seen on essex roads.
  • 2003 Ford Fiesta 1.4 diesel - Mot failure 25 Mar 2023 (Forum)
Just to ask what would the likely cost of repairs for brake pipe excessively corroded nearside and offside front to rear pipe . Brakes imbalance across the rear axle. Fuel pipe chafing on top of filter . Monitor and repair advisories play in steering rack (slight play in both sides power steering noisy ) 2 tyres worn on edge . Considering it’s 20 years old and 145000 mileage if it’s worth it.
  • Volkswagen Arteon - Petrol or Diesel Arteon 24 Sep 2021 (Forum)
Hi All, I am after some advice, I currently have a 2.0 R-Line 190 TSI on an 18 plate but my commute has now changed to 160 mile daily trip so I was thinking about adding a bit of money and trading in for the 2.0 TDI 190 as the fuel economy is at least on paper a lot better. I currently average around 44-47mpg each trip. Is this worth the swap? Is there any downfall to owning a diesel currently? Thanks in advance.
  • Why are electric cars so expensive? 4 Sep 2020 (Forum)
I cannot understand why an ordinary hatchback can cost £15,000 but the electric equivalent is £30,000.On the £15,000 petrol engined cars there is the engine, gearbox, catalytic converter, fuel tank, pipe work etc that is missing on the electric car. This makes the petrol car at least £5,000 less, then add in the electric motor, batteries and control gear would only add £10,000 to the price so an electric car should be around the £20,000 mark to buy.I think we are being ripped off somewhere?
  • 1.9 TDI 2006 VW Passat - VW Passat 1.9 TDI 2006 Cutting Out when hot 28 Aug 2020 (Forum)

  • 2001 Renault master 2.8 di - Rrenault master smoking 13 Aug 2020 (Forum)
Hi Everyone,  Trying to get my van ready for its MoT in September and its smoking on start up and continues to smoke for 10 minutes or so. My thought was that its the cold start feeding too much fuel. I wouldn't be normally be bothered but I know the MoT testers have been very strict on any visual smoke. I'd be grateful if someone has some idea of what may be going on.
  • Nissan Note 2016 1.2 Not Turbo charged - Chattering Sound from Engine 24 Jul 2020 (Forum)
FSH  Chattering / chipmunk sound when accelerating without changing down, so engine under a bit of a load - e.g. when going up an incline. SWMBO fills up at nearest petrol station which is a Tesco so not the best fuel. Occasionally she fills with Momentum 99.  Any ideas please.
  • All makes - The new era of the car 29 May 2020 (Forum)
And will your date be impressed by a driverless car while you sit back twiddling with the navigation system ? Has there ever been a better time to drive than now ? Fuel is cheaper than bottled water, the roads are empty and I’m enjoying the MOT holiday on my 17 year old Audi. Brilliant !

They are nothing but irritating gimmicks, just another example of technology doing what few people want done. The fuel saving is minimal, and is offset by increased wear on the starter circuit. Something else to give trouble and expense. I switch the device off before every journey, and it has become as natural as putting on my seat belt.
