  • Is this wheely posible? 20 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Has anyone else come across this or know how may variants of space saver spare wheel BM has? Also curious as to what I should expect. The car was sold via the approved used programme, it is only 6 months old and 1600 on the clock (i am in my 3rd wk of ownership). I now have a car with a flat and no usable spare. BMW assist have now arranged a flatbed recovery for tomorrow - I nintend to go to my local tyre fitter, followed by a visit to Lovetts!!!
  • Urgent Hep Pls - International Driver's 27 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Our son phoned from Connecticut/USA yesterday - which is smack bang in the middle of Boston and NY, USA. He went there on the 22nd and hoped to hire a car - but has been advised locally that he can't hire a car/suv as hereuires an international driver's licence. We know that in some states you have to be 25 yrs old or over and he is 24 - but that is not the issue.
  • unreliable golf 21 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Other "problems" have included the central locking malfunction, and an element in the rear window heater not working. We've had the car from new, serviced every year and the car was manufactured in Wolfsburg, are we just unlucky, or is there a new trend starting?
  • French bred 3 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Particularly noticeable, and impressive, were the many Renault 4, 9 and 11s, some well over 20 years old, most battered and bruised but still up to the job (and with their current MoT equivalent certificates on the windscreen). Perhaps Renault made their cars simpler then and, QED, they were more reliable?
  • cheapest motoring I ever heard of. 7 Apr 2004 (Forum)
It's great to see folks after a bargain but I reckon my old pal had us all beat. All his adult life he ran Citroen 2CVs (he is in his 60's now) He rarely paid more than £100 for one and got them two at a time. He then cannibalised the cars and got one decent one fron the two!
  • Police do U-turn on blue washer lights 5 Apr 2004 (Forum)
A chap fitted blue LED windscreen washer lights, as used by boy racers et al. He was seen by the Police who, understandably IMHO, fined him. The motorist, who is too old to be a boy racer even though his car is an ageing Fiesta, didn't want to make a fuss, and stumped up the fine. But at the same time, he casually enquired about the legality of these little passing phases.
  • Inspiration for 35k miles for 3k 14 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I do about 35k so need a diesel and it needs to be at least Xantia size to ferry the family about the country. Previously had an old shape A6 2.5TDI 140 (6 speed) - A nice car, but my money will only get me a N or P reg. Possibly 406, but then it's the same mechanicals as the Xantia's in a prettier, more expensive car. Looking for VFM & reliability over looks.

  • Probe 24v engine swap 29 Sep 2003 (Forum)
He's a pretty good mechanic, but doesn't have a load of time or cash. Should he do this, have it done by someone else, or tell pa-in-law to scrap the car? Also, is there a ready(ish) supply of the Mazda V6 motor? Finally, is this car as girly as the NX100 thread over on discussion suggests?! • Toyota gearbox reliability... 8 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Anyone any experience with the reliablity of Toyota gearboxes ? My 2.5 year old Corolla, with 100k, now has a nasty whine and my Toyota garage tells me it probably has a duff bearing - so a £300++ strip down job.... Annoying thing is the gearbox has been the one bad point of the whole car - it has been difficult to use since I bought it (compared to other Corolla's I drove as courtesy cars) - and 3 dealers I tried to get to fix it under warranty all told me it was fine - even though it wasn't - I'm convinced I must have had a Friday Job - odd since it's a Japanese built model, too... anyone think I can pursuade Toyota UK to help out financially here ?
  • Scenic RX4 versus What? 1 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Quite attacted by the RX4 on the basis of practicality, turbo diesel, distinctiveness in that format and the body panels (she's a liability in the car park.) New Scenic range doesn't have an RX4 though and £15k for a newish second hand seems a bit rich for a low prestige marque in what is about to be an old shape. Wants a bit of class, quite attracted by A3 but put off buying a recent 2nd hander by arrival of new model and no 5 door option in the new car, if she was going to go for new.
  • Nissan Almera Automatic 24 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Does anyone have an opinion on the above? I would be looking to buy a second hand one about 5 years old. Its important to me that its reliable. Before you all tell me its boring, I actually don't want to attract attention because too many cars round here get stolen!! I don't want to end up with a rust bucket (I currently have an M reg Fiesta which has rampant rusting despite plenty of anti-rust measures!).
  • Golf V5 auto judder 26 Feb 2003 (Forum)
I've got a Golf V5 170bhp with tiptronic transmission thats just over 1 year old and has done 11000 miles. Over the past week or so I've noticed that when accelerating briskly in automatic mode there is a perceptible judder and hesitation as the gearbox shifts into 4th and 5th gears.Once it's changed up the car drives smoothly.
  • Mercedes 190E - Rev Counter 21 May 2002 (Forum)
Hello, Some of you may recall I bought an old Mercedes 190 E for my daughter, I have done a little bit of work on it, some new exhaust parts, new front springs ( a common problem I am told ) and now the car is tip top, However the Rev counter won't work.
  • Spanish Austin Victoria 14 Oct 2001 (Forum)
In my line of work I travel to Spain often. in Bilbao I had noticed a car parked across the street from our offices which looked like a triumph Dolomite crossed with an Austin 1100. the badges said Austin Victoria. Can anyone give me some more information about this car ?
  • astra probs 8 Oct 2001 (Forum)
The trouble is when since I got it the performance seems to have reduced a fair bit. I realise this is half me getting used to it (its a lot faster than my old car), but its definitly slower. Also when i start it its very lumpy for the first thirty seconds or so. I've changed the plugs and leads with no effect. Also, since I bought the car (6 months ago) the engine has begin to sound a lot clunkier.

  • 2004 Nissan Micra - Police Back Seat Rules 31 May 2020 (Forum)
My 20 year old niece was on the way home from work (care home) last night and was stopped by the police for alleged speeding (34 in 30). Single police officer, no white band on his helmet. They asked for her details which she tried to provide through a slightly open window because of social distancing but they insisted she got out of the car and sit in their car.
