  • Remember separate starting solenoids? 8 May 2006 (Forum)
However today when retrieving it from its winter hibernation and pressing the starter button just got a click from the solenoid, no problem, obviously flattish battery, so to check this I switched on the headlamps and tried again. To my amazement the starter then whirred into life. To double check I repeated the whole process, again the starter would only turn when the headlamps were on.
  • T reg Ford Mondeo problems! 22 Apr 2006 (Forum)
However engine shows no sign of life at all, with starter making an unusual noise and seeming to turn OK but slowly and engione is not seized. (No battery issues as all electrics operate OK) Starter was OK previously. There is no water in oil apparent and even without water in block or with blown head gasket it should show some sign of life. Does the Mondeo have some kind of temperature sensor or something in ECC that would prevent a re-start?
  • Accdnt-Need to Buy a Japanese car 2-2.5k 7 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I have a Toyota Corolla 1.6 GTi T reg which unfortunately skidded and hit a pole while we were on holiday in North Wales on New year. The damage looks quite extensive to the front left with some damage to the engine and the battery as well. It looks like a write off to me although the inssurance Engineers are coming to see it. I had bought it on E bay last May for £2250 which I thot was a bargain. Anyways, now I am looking to buy another Japanese car in a similar price range.
  • Audi A6 Refurbish or replace ? 5 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I had it in mind that this might involve replacing the exhaust on a precautionary basis, changing the timing belt on a planned basis, replacing the shock absorbers and bushes because they are knackered. It had new tyres this year and new discs last year, has a new battery every three years etc. Are there any other works that I should cost in as part of a major refurbishment ? Any other engine or auto box works, for example. Routing maintenance items will continue to take place on schedule so they needn't be considered part of a refurbishment.
  • The "French" fight back. 20 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Current car is a Xantia 2,0 petrol Exclusive. I experienced the following breakdowns with them: - BX16 none GTI none 16v 1 battery Xantia none to date after 2 ½ years. Fords? wouldn?t give you tuppence for em.
  • Vauxhall Astra 1.4i 1992 (K reg) 17 May 2005 (Forum)
It can smell a little of fuel, but I think this is because I tweak the accelerator trying to get it to go. I don't do this all the time in case I flood the engine an/or flatten the battery. There is definitely ignition power there, it just won't turn over. It has also become rather smokey just lately, though it is not blue smoke. We have changed the pollen filter, in-line fuel filter, rotor arm and distributor cap.
  • Omega MV6 wouldn't start 21 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Went to start engine, which normally starts at first flick from warm or cold. It didn't start - lots of spinning of engine (battery OK) but didn't seem to be firing at all. The area manager for the garage happened to be on site and see what was going on and got annother employee and they pushed the car away from the pump, then he took me home to collect garage phone number and manual (10 mins).
  • Fiesta oil warning light 6 Apr 2005 (Forum)
I check the oil regularly, about every 250 miles or so as I'm aware that fiesta's have a tendancy to use quite alot and I frequently have to top it up. When I do this the oil warning light will come on at start up, along with the battery light, but then it won't appear at other times. I always thought that if there was a problem the warning light was supposed to come on, not the opposite. The oil is never low, so I can't see it being that.
  • Vectra DTI Engine Management Light 20 Feb 2005 (Forum)
I had a similar problem on my 2nd Vectra DTI, on that one it turned out to be a really small vacuum pipe that had come off by the battery, but on this one, IM STUMPED. Can someone please shed a little light on this for me please as having read all the horror stories of Vauxhall Dealers, im very reluctant to take it in. PLEASE PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP ME.
  • '99 Vectra 2.0 DTI blown fuse, ECU? 3 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Popped back to garage, they came and had a look, turned out fuse blown in fuse / relay box behind battery. there are 2 large fuses in there, both were 30 amp, front one blown. Pinched one from what was assumed to be Aircon, Started, pulled away (gently this time), blew again when changed into 3rd. Ok, got the car home by hok and by crook.
  • Focus Tdci Running Problem 30 Jan 2005 (Forum)
2000/w focus 1.8 td di ghia, 89,000miles ,fsh ford only serviced 250 miles ago and fitted new battery leads . drives fine and then for no reason the diesel glow plug light flashes and the car stalls ,but rev counter stays where it is ,stuck in limbo!this happens at lower speeds 30mph ish restarts fine and drives off and does the same thing again usually a mile or so down road. have changed fuel filter and it has made no difference ,yet it will do 70 miles or so without a problem thinking the auction the car came from had put petrol in tank(only a 1/4 tank in car when problems started)i filled it up with diesel to full and this has inproved things but it still breaking down every now and then ,it usually jerks before it dies . i drove the car at 70mph the other day and it went fine but every now and then it popped like some rough fuel was going through but it didnt stall or the light stayed out any ideas ,was her indoors xmas present and she wont drive it anymore!!!
  • What stops cars starting? 12 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Bad maintenance: old plugs; worn leads; cracked distributor caps; rusted rotors; pitted points, old battery. Failure to replace the timing belt. Over complicated design: My theory is that modern cars are more likely to give you a spectacular failure than simpler, older cars. With the number of computers on board a modern car, it only takes a couple of them to stop talking to each other for disaster to strike.
  • Working with Xenons (any car) 6 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Assuming that it's the bulb, is it safe enough to change it myself, provided lights are off and maybe even battery disconnected (ie is there a danger of electrocution (20,000 volts!) even after system is switched off (residual power in capacitors or suchlike.) 3, Would it be sensible to switch bulbs from side to side to make sure it really is a bulb failure - or would this probably just hasten the demise of the other one!
  • pug306td 96 electrics 3 Nov 2004 (Forum)
As title a 96 306td, I've just dropped the engine back in after having some head work done and engine bay painted. Connected all the electrics back up which was fairly straight forward however when the battery is connected the stop light and brake light come on on the dashboard. Strange without the key even in the car this shouldnt happen, also the immobiliser seems to disarm itselfb (toad) doesnt have the factory immobiliser as originally it was a n/a derv.
  • LPG Conversions - specialised 16 Jan 2004 (Forum)
They are keen especially to recommend a single point system but some suppliers insist a multi-point is mandatory due to my kind of specialised work and reliability issues. The vehicle is in top condition, uprated suspension, BF Goodrich A/T tyres, twin battery electircal system and seperate emergency equipment electrics and very well looked after. Reliability is a major factor but must be weighted against cost as all the work is voluntary (and out-with my main hospital job) and the risk of any potential engine damage from an inappropriate conversion.
  • Alternator required on 1988 Corolla 27 Nov 2003 (Forum)
I'm in a very rural area and whilst the car has some power left, it obviously can't recharge the battery or cool the engine whilst driving, so my options of driving off somewhere else for economic repair aren't marvellous. Am I being ripped off or does this seem like fair estimates/quotes?
  • Discovery Starter Motor won't Turn 26 Sep 2003 (Forum)
The blowing of this fuse means that the starter motor won't turn - but what could be causing the fuse to go? The most likely explanation is a short circuit possibly in the battery, relay, solenoid circuit, but where is this short circuit occurring? I assume the current going throught the starter switch and powering up the relay is usually much lower than 30 amps - or am I wrong?
  • Lupo 1.4 16V - oil deposits and idle. 19 Sep 2003 (Forum)
I\'ve read previous posts here which suggest it might be due to carp building up in a sensor somewhere, but I wondered if it might have been caused by disconnecting the battery when the clutch was changed. It seems a bit of a concidence that it\'s just started happening now. Does the engine management system lose and then re-learn settings such as this if it has been disconnected?
  • Thoughts of a car I viewed today 26 Aug 2003 (Forum)
The oil is an ok colour (i.e. dark brown but not yet black). It costs £400 and has had a new radiator, alternator and battery. However, it has no MOT or tax. When it was last mot?d before being garaged for 6 months it needed new bushes and the ABS needed attention and cost £160. It also has mot certificates for five years which is how long she owned it.
  • Peugeot spare key 25 Jun 2003 (Forum)
I have not been given any codes for the key, radio etc. How do I get these codes because I assume that if I have to disconnect the battery for any reason I will need the codes. 3)Because I only have one key I need to get a second one but I am concerned that there is still a key out there that will access the car. Can I get the system reprogrammed so that the missing key is useless and if so what is involved in doing this?
