  • Getting road tax when buying cars at auction 1 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Valid MOT, but I can phone a friendly garage and "book it in" so that's covered; 2. Insurance, I can get this arranged by phone; and 3. Road tax - not sure how to do this. My guess is that most (or at least some) cars will not have a tax disc, as it will have been cashed in.

  • Car Insurance Question 9 Jan 2006 (Forum)
As you may see from another thread, I am on the cusp of buying a car. In fact it is the first car either my girlfriend or myself will have insured ourselves for 2.5 years as we both have company cars (she loses hers at the end of Feb hence the purchase). As a result neither of us have official no claims (although we did have prior to getting company cars).
  • Courtesy Car 11 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Hi I usually do my own servicing, but my Father has a Jaguar that he purchased from a main dealer, and is taking in for its first service. The dealer has told him that there is an insurance charge for providing a courtesy car ! is this normal ? I thought you normally drove a courtesy car on your own third party cover and they insured the vehicle itself under their dealer policy. He rang his own insurers and they wanted the full details of the courtesy car such as year of manufacture and value etc which he had no idea of and wanted to charge about £50 !.
  • ABS Awareness! 23 Nov 2001 (Forum)
How many drivers (off both sexes) are not aware of how ABS manifests itself? Also how the pedal effects can vary from car to car, and what you should do, and not do. Maybe raising awareness of ABS and its effects is a good point for all car dealers to include when selling cars? Also more support for taking your wife (or husband) to the 'extremely useful' empty snow-covered supermarket car park and find out!
  • new Beetle Oil consumption 14 Feb 2001 (Forum)
I bought a new VW Beetle 12 months ago - one of the first RH drive models and have since covered 10000 miles. In most respects I have been very happy with the car but there is one problem area; the car is using around 1.5 litres of oil every 200 miles. The dealer who sold us the car says that it is "perfoming within spec" and the handbook does say that the car could use up to 1 litre of oil per 1000 km.
  • 2011 Peugeot 207 1.4 8v - Possible failed cambelt? 18 Feb 2019 (Forum)
They towed the car back to her house. The next day she had a family friend mechanic come out and try and start the car again, and again saying it SOUNDS like the cambelt has gone. So 3 people so far have said it's the cambelt.
  • Renault Laguna - AA Breakdown Repair Cover - Dont Waste your money 24 May 2014 (Forum)
My mechanic said "Everything is wear and tear". As soon as you drive a new car off the forecourt you will have some degree of wear and tear.  What is the point of having insurance when every time I go to claim, the AA refuses to pay out? Anyone would think that they are trying to get me to cancel my insurance because my car is getting old.

  • Mercedes - Brand New Rusty Mercedes 2017 5 Sep 2017 (Forum)
The dealership tried to repair the car in house by just mopping it and not sending to a specialist as the car is not covered under warranty. The window surrounds are also marked with small burn marks from the iron filings and the dealership have damaged most for the external trim.
