  • I think that older cars can be much better value than newer cars. 17 Aug 2013 (Ask HJ)
Concerning recent correspondence about Jaguar XFs, diesels are more economical but by a very small margin when you consider the cost of fuel and diesel...
  • Mazda 6 TS 2009 diesel 2.0L - Car loses power after engine warms up 1 Dec 2018 (Forum)
Hi Folks,  So I bought a Mazda 6 TS 2009, 2.0L diesel about 4 months ago. Everything was working fine until about a month ago, the car started losing power while driving. It wouldn't have any boost when you put the foot down on gas, and after a few seconds it would then have boost and work fine, but then when the car slows again it takes a while for the revs to build up.
  • Chrysler Grand Voyager 2000 2.5td - electrical faults and loss of power above 2000rpm 20 Mar 2017 (Forum)
Firstly it is down on power. Initially I thought "well its a diesel, it won't perform like my lovely old V6".  The engine pulls actually quite well up to about 2000, then it sort of holds back, especially so on full or large throttle openings, but it seems to go better if you lift almost right off, and on very small throttle openings it nearly gets a second wind.
  • Need a used seven seater - what do you recommend> 13 Jan 2014 (Ask HJ)
I need some advice on buying a new second hand car. We are a family of six, with two adults and four children under the age of 10. We have looked at the...
  • Most Reliable Hatchback For Under 5k? 23 Sep 2020 (Forum)
I had toyed with the idea of getting an FN2 Civic Type R, but the road tax puts me off, I know they're a cracking engine as I've had an EP3 that had done a lot of miles. I used to do just about all the maintenance on the cars I had. I'm thinking to avoid diesel cars. I just want something that is reliable and not bad on fuel, I'm not bothered how fast it is, but I'm guessing it needs to be at least 100 BHP. I'm thinking of a Honda Civic, same shape as the FN2, Hyundai I30, Kia Ceed or possibly a Focus.
  • Volkswagen Passat CC 08 - Is this even right or what? 5 Feb 2015 (Forum)
Hi everyone,    I have a Passat CC 08, CR engine GT 140hpb diesel.  Somehow the consumption of the car just doesn't add up. When I start the car, it starts off with 8mpg, but it should be around 40mpg within the city. I have talked to many people who own cars with similar amenities and they say their average consumptions is 42-45 mpg.
  • Small, petrol engined automatics - poor economy 1 Sep 2013 (Forum)
Would you say this was poor?  I would have been disappointed with less than 40mpg in my S-Max (admittedly a diesel auto) for the motorway trips.
  • 2003 combo 1.7di - Corsa combo power loss 13 Jul 2013 (Forum)
important; color: #009900; font-size: 100%; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: underline !important; background-color: transparent;">fuel pump showed no issues. The mechanic knew very little about diesels so I didn't leave the van with him as he looked stumped. Before I take it into a garage can anyone arm me with likely causes so I don't get ripped off with un-necessary work.
  • Skoda Superb Estate - Which Skoda is more reliability 22 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Taking into consideration things like turbo's; injectors; DMF; DPF and whatever else they bolt on to these engines, which of the above 3 engines, with our current knowledge, should require the least repairs (ignoring fuel and tax etc for the moment)?  Many thanks
  • Ford Mondeo TDCi 130bhp 06 - Fumes getting inside. What to check? 6 Sep 2011 (Forum)
I have a very friendly and very local indie garage (though I'm not sure how expert they are with diesels).  I'm inclined to take the car to them as a first port of call with this issue. So my question is: Could someone in the know possibly suggest some possible causes for this problem that the garage could check.
  • Toyota Prius - Toyota Prius 3 test 25 Jul 2011 (Forum)
This thing is tortuous while accelerating. Verdict - nice car but not that fun to drive. Will get a diesel next time.
  • VW Passat TDI - 01-05 Automatic Good/Bad Choice?? 23 Jun 2011 (Forum)
Both around 100k miles, both TDI and automatic Now the questions... Am I looking at the wrong cars here if im looking for a fuel efficient diesel automatic in and around the passats size. I have a good few of the VAG specific tools collected up by now so naturally VW is where I would look first, but I know absolutely nothing about automatics to be honest except that when they give trouble.... they take your wallet down with them...
  • Vauxhall Zafira A - Engine manangement light mystery 11 Apr 2010 (Forum)
I have started to get a major, and potentially dangerous, problem with my high mileage (150k) 53 reg Zafira 2 litre diesel where, if I have to accerate hard (for instance on a motorway) the engine management warning light comes on and the b***** system puts me into "get home" mode, slowing the car dramatically - which when you are attempting to overtake is disconcerting to say the least.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - Farewell Mondeo - Great used car. 16 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Almost two years ago I bought the 2001 Ghia X Estate 2.0 petrol on a whim from friends who'd changed to a people carrier. It's been a bit of a time out from my usual Citroen diesels but what an excellent used car for anyone in the £1k - £7k range. The only real motivation for selling it were the fuel bills at 30mpg average. A smaller factor was the over sharp ride on its 17" alloys with 50 profile tyres.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 02 2.0 Cutting out at speed - loss of power 24 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Hi I have a 52 plate 2.0 TDCI diesel with 128k miles . The problem happened last week when the car cut out at 50/60mph out on a steep hill. Lucky noone was behind me. The car restarted. After it happened a second time - i took it to my local independent garage and the codes are P1211 and PO251.
  • BMW - Warranty work or not? 14 May 2008 (Forum)
. --------------------------------------- *I wasn\'t surprised a) because I\'ve little faith in dealers\' ability to correct such matters, and b) because nearly new demonstrators - 330d and 325i - that I test-drove while I was there had the same problem to much the same or a lesser degree. Incidentally the diesel and the petrol returned almost identical fuel consumptions, according to the readout, on the same test route - same driving style, same traffic conditions.
  • Citroen Saxo (1997 - 2003) - 1997 1.5D Problems - Part 2 18 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Could it be an injector opening to early before the right pressure is reached or is it a sign of the fuel pump on the way out? Many thanks in advance for you help and patience. Styrman
  • SAAB - Carbon deposits and sensors 9-3 2001 2.2 TiD 3 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Has anyone else got any suggestions as to what else they could look for as this sounds like more than the Saab main dealer was going to do for a third the price? Cheers, John p.s. Avoid supermarket fuel is the moral!
  • I've turned it upside down 20 May 2007 (Forum)
So I was stupid I stuffed up I got it wrong Last week I asked you the best way to spend £5k on a 4 mile per day car Quite rightly my dream of a shiny Fiat Panda were torched Diesel 205 you said, £800 you said Thus besmirched and educated I return And I?ve turned it upside down So what happens if wifey takes the Focus to the station and back and I get the second car! So what?
  • MPV or estate car for 2+3 family 30 Jul 2006 (Forum)
We might actually keep the 406 as it's reliable and well-maintained. Whatever we go for it will have to be a diesel - the fuel economy is important. We are currently doing about 12000 miles a year and I don't change cars often (every 5-10 years). I don't really care about it being a bit on the slow side - I'm past all that now and comfort and reliability are much more important (yawn!).
