2003 combo 1.7di - Corsa combo power loss - mobisat
Hi,

I've recently purchased a combo van on an 03 plate.
There's a sudden loss of power, for example when setting off from traffic lights everything feels fine until I change up into 2nd gear then it starts... a very noticeable sudden drop in power which almost makes the van feel like its trying to pull back, it lasts for a split second then takes off at normal speed, I then change up into 3rd and this process repeats itself, a sharp pull back in power then accelerates off at speed.

Once I'm in 4th/5th gear on the flat, the van purrs along with no issues but I dread approaching hills with traffic on my tail, as soon as I drop down a gear on a hill, the same thing happens and the power can drop from 35mph to 15mph very quickly and I get the usual 1 handed gestures from overtaking motorists.

So has anyone experienced similar issues or have any ideas?
Its been on a computer at the garage and all sensors came back normal, and the pressure test on turbo and fuel pump showed no issues.

The mechanic knew very little about diesels so I didn't leave the van with him as he looked stumped.

Before I take it into a garage can anyone arm me with likely causes so I don't get ripped off with un-necessary work.

Thanks for any help

Ps. there is a puff of blue smoke when it decides to accelerate off after power loss

I was getting similar problems with a 2001 Astra 1.7 DTI Y17DT. Eventually diagnosed via opcom to a failing MAF sensor.

The MAF sensor had eventually thrown a code after many miles of falling acceleration. Its voltage was all over the place at idle, going from 0.92 to 1.88, and fluctuated similarly up to WOT.

I cleaned the MAF to no avail, just the same. It never reposted another failure, although it was not working properly.

Purchased item 300850492558 off ebay.

The car now accelerates cleanly and quickly and doesn't have that flat spot.

Check the MAF puts out between 2 and 4 volts, or nearly that, on these diesels, and more importantly check the voltage is steady at any throttle opening within a range of +/- 0.2v.

Typically you won't see a MAF fault until it gets really bad as the ecu will take it for granted.

You must diagnose the car somehow before spending money.

@1litregolfeater thanks very much for that

For what it costs I tempted to just replace it anyway

I can pick one up off ebay for £15

Thanks

That's what it turned out to be with my car.

Don't replace it just in case. There are too many sensors. You must have a good idea of which one is going down.

Having said that, MAF's a prime candidate, so bet £20 on the favourite.

Hope it fixes it and let us know, post back with success or failure!

I visited a diesel specialist for a second opinion and he advised definitely not to replace the MAF until the engine is thoroughly checked out.

He asked why I had no printouts from the last garage I visited and questioned whether the diagnostics were done correctly so I'm booked in for friday.

I'll post back on the fix for this problem

Thanks

@1litregolfeater

You were bang on mate.

Its a failing MAF sensor, the voltage is all over the place

Well chuffed its not a big job so the advice is to obviously replace it then give the van a good blast down the motorway to remove any crap that might have built up in the cat

Thanks for your advice
