Why is my Volkswagen Passat producing smoke, oil and water from the exhaust? 30 Jul 2010 (Ask HJ)
My Volkswagen Passat 1.9TDI 130 Sport is throwing out white smoke, oil and water. Have you any ideas? Can I try injector cleaner? -
Mondeo TDCI fuel inj needs calibration? 13 Apr 2010 (Forum)
Since I got it at 96k in March, it has been quite smoky when accelerating through the mid-range and it has not been particularly economical either. Is it time to get the engine calibration re-mapped? Does the fuel injection mapping need regular updating? Ford has not been able to find any fault with it and it passed its first MoT emission fine in September. My fuel consumption is 39.48 mpg (brim-to-brim but the trip computer states 46mpg) with the lowest at 28mpg (driving 2 miles to and from work within the congestion zone in London) and highest at 46mpg (driving up to and touring around Scotland). -

Peugeot 206 hatchback (1998 - 2006) - 01 2.0 HDI Turbo mystery 3 Jul 2009 (Forum)
It will start perfectly when cold and I can run around in it like a normal car. However I park up and cannot restart the car, once the engine is hot. I got a fuel pressure regulator fault so I have changed the fuel filter and housing and the High pressure fuel pump in the engine bay. The engine management light went off and I thought I had fixed it, drove around for half an hour and the same thing happens again. -
Ford Mondeo II (1996 - 2000) - 98 1.8td 'Squelching' noise when revving engine. 28 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Finally, I've spotted a small in line fuel filter (looks obviously not a standard fitment) in the fuel pipe to the injection pump. Could these three things be related do you think? Is there anything throttle related near the passenger footwell that could cause the noise I'm hearing? -
Fuel shortage 25 Apr 2008 (Forum)
The fuel shortage in Scotland and the North reminds me of the protest strike about 7 years ago . I was returning from a lenghty journey looking for some fuel on my way home, and saw a queue at a filling station that obviously had some. -
Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 2000 1.8 TDDI Fuel Pump Problem 19 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Now 6 weeks later the engine has been rebuilt but I am now being told the engine will not start and the mechanic thinks it is because the battery has been off for so long the ecu has lost its settings. He towed it to the local ford dealer who put it on the computer but they have diagnosed internal fuel pump error. I fail to see why the fuel pump will now be faulty since the rebuild as it had nothing to do with the rebuild and the car ran ok apart from the crankshaft fault. Any ideas please ? -
Vauxhall Corsa C (2000 - 2006) - 2003 (December) 1.7CDTi - stalling when cold 25 Feb 2008 (Forum)
i have had changed the following parts: coolant temp sensor- technical data for the car says this is a common fualt however no change once new on fitted only sensor was chnaged not wiring and it was an aftermarket sensor. Should i try genuine sensor and a wiring kit??? Secondhand (but known to be free from faults) fuel temp sensor in high pressure fuel pump - the reason for this is that autodata diagnostic equipment shows the fuel temp reading to be -34 degrees. how ever no change made the car runs fine once warm obviously this problem is fuel related but not sure what to do next. -
Mondeo ST24 V's ST220 fuel economy. 15 Sep 2004 (Forum)
I've just discovered the ST220 is a 3.0L V6, not the 2.5L I used to own in an ST24. The one thing I'm concern about is the fuel economy. This you might find odd if I'm considering buying a car like this. The fact is that the ST24 I owned a few years back produced an average of 18mpg, being an American built Duratech V6 lump, I dont think they were too concerned with economy. -
Mercedes A-Class Fuel Leaks 10 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Help... We're suffering a persistent fuel leak from the mrs' A-Class. It only seems to happen after it's been stood for a couple of days or more- after starting it up today there was petrol trickling out just in front of the rear wheels (hard to tell where exactly as it's got a plastic undertray that's nearly the length of the vehicle, hence it could be swilling about on top of that and leaving where gravity takes it). -
Fiesta 1.25 zetec - fuel system problems 20 Aug 2003 (Forum)
1.25 Zetec 1997, 94,000 miler. Sudden chugging down motorway and loss of speed, replaced fuel filter for the first time and used injector cleaner. Stopped all the chugging- 90% better. Problem is when blipping accelerator quickly from idling, revs seem to do the opposite and die down for longer than usual say half a second, picks up after the initial air intake. -
Fuel Injector Cleaner update 5 Dec 2001 (Forum)
As I drive approx 400 miles per week this represents a difference in just under 3 litres of fuel per week which equates to a saving (at 72.9p/litre) of about 100 quid a year. Not bad for something which cost a fiver though it does specify usage every 3000 miles. Just as simple is buying a gallon of paraffin and using (I think David W's) suggestion of 1ml to 1l every month or so. -

Renault Clio 1.4 RT will not start 18 Apr 2021 (Forum)
I have a N reg renault clio 1.4 RT that will not start, the fuel pump relay cuts in on initial cranking but then cuts out, sometimes the engine attempts to start up but then stops. I removed the air box, cranked the vehicle and shorted the relay and found no fuel to be injecting in. -
Benefit of super unleaded in direct injection? 2 Jan 2018 (Forum)
The marketing departments would tell us that the extra additives in super unleaded can help to clean valve stems but would it be fair to say it's not much use for engines that use direct injection into the cylinder? What benefit is left then to using a higher octane fuel? Does a higher octane fuel, on average, generate less carbon once burned? Thanks. -

Vauxhall Insignia Advert on HJ 11 Apr 2012 (Forum)
On the link I couldn't find the offer of £13,995 for the car advertised. The link also uses petrol prices of 113p per gallon to calculate fuel costs. It says those are recalculated annually but was fuel really that cheap within a year? On the whole a pretty missleading advert that should not be hosted by HJ surely?
