  • Speed limiter and cruise control 22 Feb 2008 (Forum)
All the cruise contol equiped cars i've driven do that anyway? The car I'm looking at has both speed limiter and cruise control. Plus it has an auto parking brake with hill start assist. Do they work well? I managed without them just fine all these years. Sounds v expensive if things go pear shaped? Ta
  • Nissan Almera Knocking Noise 5 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Sounded at first like a dodgy driveshaft, but I took the car to a good local garage, and they did a "pre-MOT inspection", found no problems with the wheel bearings, driveshafts or CV gaiters. Brakes were also fine. The only thing I've not considered is tracking - could this cause a constant knocking? Knock is also apparent when steering lock-to-lock (i.e. parallel parking). Any suggestions welcome. Thanks.
  • Carlton gearbox noise 7 Apr 2006 (Forum)
1993 Vauxhall Carlton 2.0 auto I've had a "groaning" noise from my autobox when in neutral for some time and now this occurs in park also, usually when the engine has been warmed up. The fluid is topped-up and a good colour. Can anybody shed any light on the source/problem? The box works fine (grabs tree), and is silent in drive or through the gears.
  • Strange Kangaroo-ing Daewoo Matiz 18 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Hi to forum My wife's Matiz has developed a fault whilst parked up for 10 days. Returned home from holiday and started car - drove ok for a few miles then started kangarooing. Now car will start just fine and you can rev it's wotsits off without any hesitation or stalling.
  • Motorists paranoid? 14 Apr 2005 (Forum)
For some time I've been of the opinion that UK drivers are paranoid, claiming persecution by all and sundry (both here and overseas) in the form of unfair stealth taxes, speed cameras, parking fines etc. etc. I read yesterday however that a bill intended to deal with the miscreations of foreign drivers in the UK had run out of time and, to cap it all, a leading car magazine has demonstrated how drivers of foreign registered vehicles are effectively above the law in many respects, there being virtually no enforcement action pursued by the authorities here.
  • VW Bora Windscreen Wipers 6 Mar 2002 (Forum)
I was out in my dad's brand new one on Saturday when the wipers suddenly packed up (completely dead on all settings). We found somewhere to park and checked the fuse which was OK. After about half an hour we were just about to ring the breakdown people when we tried them again and they were fine. The car is fitted with a rain sensor and when they stopped working they were on the intermittent setting.
  • Ford Fiesta Mk 4 Diesel Clutch probs 25 Jul 2007 (Forum)
As stated above, I am the owner of a "P" reg fiesta and I have a strange intermittent clutch pedal problem. It changes gear fine but the pedal doesn't return itself properly, I have to help it the last half an inch with the end of my shoe. The real problems occur in rush hour traffic, where I discover that if I do not take my foot off the clutch completely every time I pull away, it returns less and less until my foot is on the floor, clutch completely deployed yet I can't get it into gear (or out of it .. which is interesting when you are trying to get out of a parking space in reverse!)
  • Nissan Micra (1992 - 2003) - N reg auto CVT gearbox (minor ???) problem 14 Sep 2024 (Forum)
BUT engaging drive the lever baulks and when forced in causes a horrible crunching noise. The button on the side of the gearlever is fine. The crinching noise comes from the gearbox rather than the base of the lever. Also hard to move out of drive. You need to hit it, then it goes. There is no problem from park to reverse. Only really into drive.
  • De Dion Bouton - Lot of talk about town centre's dying 15 Dec 2011 (Forum)
IMO it's not just councils gouging the motorist with parking charges...though thats a large part of it.  It's just their whole motorist hating ethos.  One way, traffic calming, officious wardens, spy camera cars, cctv fines etc.  Too much hassle.
  • Vauxhall Corsa auto - automatic does not engage reverse unless revved 13 Nov 2011 (Forum)
About 70k on the clock Occasionally when engaging reverse it refuses to move without a quick flip on the accelerator after which it performs normally. Unfortunately this is an unwise move in a car park. From cold on a level surface it always moves off in reverse OK but then it is fast-idling at that time. Forward gears are fine. Is this a case of a sticky valve or solenoid or is it symptomatic of something more serious  (and expensive) in the box?

  • Ford Galaxy (2006 - ) - 2006 2.0 Clutch failing on 13000 mile Galaxy 23 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Hi, I had to call out the AA yesterday as my new shape Galaxy started belching out smoke from the bonnet in traffic. Diagnosis was clutch burn, which would right itself once cooled down. Car has been parked overnight, but upon driving a short distance, the horrrible burning clutch smell is still present, despite the clutch itself feeling fine with plenty of bite. Any ideas how much it would cost to replace the clutch ?

  • Volkswagen Golf V (2004 - 2008) - Trapped stone in front disc assembly. 28 May 2008 (Forum)
After having negotiated a newly laid car park, with very fine stone, I seem to have picked up a stone (or two) between the disc and the protective backplate, on my front off-side wheel's disc brake assembly. Most of the time I don't notice it, but then suddenly it seems to get picked up and then makes some temporary grinding noises and then suddenly stops.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 99 1.4 petrol - electrical faults 25 Jan 2008 (Forum)
i have a Peugeot 306 lx t-reg it starts ok. if it's running while parked or i'm reversing there is no problem but as soon as i drive forwards all the electrics go, the dials go up and down the led display goes haywire then the engine cuts out also now the central locking does'nt work either i tried the battery terminals they were fine, i cleaned the points on the earthwire, still no joy. it's now becoming a pain. could it be the battery itself. it does seem to die quite quickly if the car ain't running.
  • Vauxhall Nova (1983 - 1993) - Using wipers causes misfire 23 Sep 2007 (Forum)
The problem is when the single wipe is selected, the engine stops a split second after the wipers park. When driving it feels like a misfire, and the engine management light comes on, then the engine restarts and everythings fine, when idling, the engine stops but restarts straight away. I've had a quick look at earths and fuses but can't see anything amiss.
  • Value of '96 mondeo 26 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Engine runs fine. Starts first time. Over the last two years it has had a new exhaust and alternator. Basically to me it is a good runner and should last at least a year without any problems.
  • Leaky 306 13 Feb 2002 (Forum)
After checking the sunroof drain holes, scuttle panel drain, and ariel mounts I am still foxed as to how the water is getting in!!! The roof and passenger seat is bone dry and all of the electrics still work fine, I have not driven in the rain a great deal over the last few days but the car is parked outside overnight. Anyone else had this problem or have any ideas as to where this water may be getting in?
  • Micra Cold Starting 13 Nov 2001 (Forum)
My wife's Micra M Reg 1 litre, has a probelm with cold starting If you start the engine for a short period when cold, say when moving the car a short distance, and then stop it, it is then very hard if not impossible to restart. Got caught out yesterday when having to move the car in the local car park. Had to call the AA sometime ago due to the same problem, and was told that this was a known problem with Mk2 Micras. If you let the engine reach normal temperature i.e. ECU finishes it's cold cycle, the engine will restart fine every time.
