• 4- to 5-speed gearbox - '89 Escort 1.3 24 Aug 2004 (Forum)
  Hi I'm considering, (for the second year running!) swapping the gearbox in my car from a 4-speed to a 5-speed unit, as the noise on motorways is starting to annoy! My question is, what things need swapping apart from the gearbox? i.e. gearbox linkage, driveshafts, mounts.

  I am miffed that the tyres on my S3 Audi Quattro are almost at the limit of legal tread depth after just 9000 miles from new in fourteen months. The rear end is worse than the front. Running on 225/45 R17 91Y Bridgestone Potenza RE 040. Definitely not happy to replace with these. Any suggestions for a sport tyre that will give at least 15000 miles with good grip?

  old car is now brown bread(dead),its got 10 mth tax to run out,can i get a refund or swop it to get a new tax disc,thank you ,i remember years back i got a refund after 3 mths of telling them(but sumone said the rules have changed now)

  A mate has a 10 year old Previa auto that is misfiring, running badly and doing about 5mpg. A mate of his changed the plugs with no effect (not me!). Does anyone know a reliable independant mechanic in Surrey (he lives in Addlestone) that they could recommend.

  The wipers have developed a habit of staying on..sometimes they will work on intermittent for a while, but then they just start running at a constant speed,(speed 1) and refuse to stop! The only solution seeems to be to switch the car off and wait 10 mins or so!! Any ideas welcomed! Cheers, Ian.

  Assuming I find it, and tax the car on Saturday (wont be able to do it on Friday), am I going to get fined? The tax runs out on the 31st... but by the end of the 31st, the car will be taxed. Am I panicking over nothing?

  I believe haynes suggest replacing at 80k for a pug 306. Mines is on 127k and original injectors, and is running okay. However, fuel consumption is slightly below average, but then again I do have a slightly heavy foot.

  .£27) - don't know how good they were but hey, given you might only need them once or twice a year they're a real bargain. Good quality ones in this country run out at about £90.

  I, too, have had incredible difficulty in having a sub re-funded. I've been chasing this up for months and just getting the run-around. However, at the time I renewed I did so by credit card, and since the publisher ( a most appropriately named one ) kept my money but didn't send the mag, the credit card co will re-fund me if the publisher doesn't cough up by this week.

  Running on from the discussion in April on this site about the availability and high cost of oil for the VW PD Deisel engines. Apparently the correct oil (Castrol Synthetic 5W 40 conforming to 505.01) is available from Ford dealers in 5 litre bottles.

  Hi all, When I start off from \'cold\' in the morning,the first 50 yds it runs ok, then I have a left turn at a junction. For the next 30 yds or so it seems starved of petrol and plays up a bit, after that no bother, goes great. Once had this years ago on an old Ford pop. Anyone any ideas,or had similar problem?

  I bought a Polo S (65) last December and have just noticed water ingress between the rear hatch and the plastic lining (I can hear it sloshing about and when I open the hatch, it runs out and into the boot). No other problems. Has anyone had similar? I guess it has to go back to the dealer... Many thanks, frmarcus

  i have recently bought a g reg astra gte with a fuel problem i have investegated and found out that the amps from the battery are not getting to the fuel pump, i had disconnected the fuel pump and had it running so its not that. i was woudering if a relay had gone or something but i dont have any knowledge on these cars. can someone help??????????????

  As expected my Sat Nav (CoPilot running on IPAQ) indicates a different speed compared to my Octavia's speedo. Sat Nav 28.5MPH Speedo 30MPH Sat Nav 38.0MPH Speedo 40MPH Sat Nav 67MPH Speedo 70MPH Can I presume the Sat Nav is more accurate?

  i am thinking of a astra 1.7td estate around m or n reg iunderstand there are differnt versions of this engine ie low pressure turbo. which would be the one to go for i would want the nippest version and also any pointers on what to look for as i have never had a diesel before . would i get near 48 mpg on long runs thanks in advance

  But that Fiat badge on the front often conjures up thoughts of unreliability and questionable build quality? What are the views of this car? Too high running costs to justify it?s purchase? Is the chassis really that good? Are the non-turbo 16v and 20v worth considering?

  The engine in my 1.9 diesel Xantia (non turbo)is running hot, according to the temp gauge, but I am not getting any heat from the heater. I have recently topped up the header tank, do I need to bleed the system to get rid of any air gaps. The thermostat seems to be working but only the right hand side of the raditor is getting warm.
