  • One for the Traffic Police 23 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Reason I am asking is that in Scotland they still have the conventional access / exit route? 2. Whilst in France I occasionally listened to Radio 2 for news etc and was amazed on the road reports the amount of motorways etc that are closed for hours after an RTA. In France, the police will very quickly clear the scene of an RTA without all the investigations we do here.
  • Alternator Problems?? 26 Jun 2002 (Forum)
Symptom as below: Start engine, battery charge light on dash is dim, rev engine, light get brighter. 1. check Voltage over battery with engine off = 12v 2. check voltage over battery with engine on = 12v 3. check voltage over battery with engine running, plus lights, blower, rear sreen, radio etc running = 10v 4. check voltage across alternator feed to battery, and dash light feed = 5v I changed the regulator/brush unit over from the old alternator, and still no luck. The Skoda Spares place I got the kit from also confirmed it was charging ok before it was shipped.
  • Done to a turn 29 Aug 2001 (Forum)
Do you see, for example, the government, or their acolytes and apologists, daily broadcasting their views in the media: television, wireless radio, the newspapers, magazines, billboard and other advertising, official literature, educational establishments, and in a myriad of internet based sources. Do they continuously come out with new twists on their spin for why you shouldn't do this, or it's wrong for you to do that, or you are harming something or someone if you do the other?

  • A reader's letter to a police superintendent regarding the wrongful accusation of a driver. 23 Feb 2013 (Ask HJ)
I fully endorsed the prosecution of mobile phone users whilst driving. Made the point that a £60 fine and a 3 point endorsement seems grossly inadequate...
  • Is the behaviour of insurance companies causing increased premiums for consumers? 18 Feb 2012 (Ask HJ)
I have just heard on the radio that car insurance premiums have gone up by 35 per cent in the last two years. The usual excuses are trotted out: more people...

  • Citroen C4 (2004 - ) - Mini review - impressed! 17 Sep 2008 (Forum)
The first thing that strikes is the steering wheel boss which is fixed in position, with the wheel rim rotating independently of it. The central boss contains thumb switches for radio controls and cruise control (!) , and also contains a neat row of warning lights. There are three backlit LCD panels - a big central one with speed, fuel and temperature gauges , one on the console showing computer and radio information, and a "strip" type digital LCD rev counter mounted on the steering boss.
  • 2013 MK3 Ford Focus Titanium Econetic 140k miles - Urgent help with haywire electricals 7 Sep 2019 (Forum)
We were on the A13 in Normandy, and I got a warning on the dashboard center display (trip computer, not radio) saying "Park assist malfunction, service now". All the dash lights came on, Speedo dropped to zero. I assumed I'd lost an abs sensor. Trip computer went blank (just dashes). Then the display said "immobiliser malfunction, service now".
  • Vauxhall Zafira A - Loss of instruments, charging suspect 1 Jun 2018 (Forum)
Flat battery after driving couple of weeks back.Later when testing: Suspect alternator as with all lights, aircon, radio, fan, voltage at battery reduced to about 12.7V on 2000 revs. Didn't try driving, but then dove to work etc 14miles (spare battery in car in case) and everthing fine, charging 13.5 volts with everthing on.

  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 06 1.8 Acceleration reduced warning then car won't 13 Dec 2013 (Forum)
After work, about 10 hours later, I returned to the car and when I turned the key I had no reaction from the ignition, all the lights on the dashboard lit up, a red light at the top of the dash started flashing and the computer screen said: "Steering Assist Failure" followed by: "Engine Systems Fault" That was it - I could not start the car, although I could sit and listen to the radio or even have the fan switched on, so I presume it was the immobiliser kicking in. The car seemed fine during the week when it was cold outside, even freezing, it was only when the car had sat in the damp and rain over Wednesday/ Thursday night that it had a problem.
  • Renault Megane,Toyota Avensis,Mazda 3- all saloons - Which 08 saloon? 6 Jan 2013 (Forum)
Engineer Andy has given me a lot of help with  the Mazda 3 saloon and I would value any further feedback comparing the Renault Megane 1.6, Toyota Avensis 1.8 and Mazda 3 1.6 saloons, all 08 moidels,  to guide me to which would be the one to go for. Comfort and quiet driving are important as is a good radio/cd speaker combination and ease of getting into and out of the car - my Megane seats are very low - probably due to age. I do not drive a lot but I do enjoy driving and being in the car - and so a relaxing driving experience is important to me.
  • Skoda Fabia - engine stutter and high oil use 8 Jan 2011 (Forum)
That said I have toyed with various theories including, sticky valves, faulty ECU, bad electrical joint, radio frequency interference from passing mini-cabs/public service vehicles blitzing the ECUs working values. prompting a reset etc. Any ideas ? Nothing appears to show on VAG COM diagnosis. Also, the engine started consuming oil from 30,000 miles onwards.
  • Farewell chug a chug Diesels - you served us well. 13 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Maybe not - as long as it moves along the road in its grim little petrol engine way and the eye pod plugs into the radio. Here it comes... with it`s anodyne buzzing and augmented central locking type electro magnetic inlet valves. No springs. The next test bed for the public?
  • Toyota Avensis (2009 - ) - New Avensis 16 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Why put the fuel cap release and traction control switch low down below the steering wheel just where the switch illumination annoys me at night but in a difficult place to reach! They have repeated the problem with the previous Radio where you do not appear to be able to curtail a TP announcement easily. I do not like the cruise control lever moving with the steering wheel (as before). At least there is an indication that it has set now but it still turns off each time you turn the ignition off - pain in the neck when you are used to systems which do not.
