  • Jap imports 8 Oct 2023 (Forum)
I buy and sell cars and have done for years but have found some good deals for cars in Japan I want to import, mostly these will be German brands, BMW/Audi/MB/VW I have done some homework and asked around and I am fairly confident with the procedure/registration and tax side of things.   The only concerns/questions remaining is regarding the cars themselves, does anyone know if theres any reason why it would be a bad idea to import these, I know years ago it was hard to insure due to the different build quality, but from my research the German cars beside the instrument measurements which can easily be changed, the cars are virtually the same but tend to be in way better condition, most of the cars I deal with are up to 4 years old so nothing old.

  • mazda 6 or something else - What used car to buy under £12k 18 Oct 2020 (Forum)
Appreciate its quite a list and open to suggestions as none of the above standing out and I don't claim to be knowledgeable about cars. I looked at BMW, jag and audi... but told repair costs can be painful and I clock up the miles  Live in Sussex and looked at a few cars but thinking private purchase as been burnt by used car dealers in the past, including the current car which developed a number of expensive faults not long after purchase.

  • Gearing - how it has changed over time 2 Sep 2018 (Forum)
Modest sized hatchbacks had top gear at around 15/16mph per 1000rpm in top and even 2 litre cars and above from various makes including Mercedes and BMW were geared around 19-20 tops. Must have made so many cars very noisey at motorway speeds. The report on the Audi 100 in 1982 had what’s was seen as insanely high gearing at 27.9 per 1000rpm. Last night for comparison I tried cruising along at 60 in 4th then 5th and then 6th in my Honda CRZ and looked at the Rev counter to realise that the original CRX in the 80s would have had a top gear ratio equivalent to less than 4th in my current car.
  • Toyota RAV4 - Toyota RAV4 Purchase 20 May 2018 (Forum)
The wife is getting real 'ancy as the 3 series is getting crankier than her, the repairs have started and the BMW has developed one real nice oil leak (though this beauty owes me nothing after all this time - unlike the other 'beauty'). Thanks for any replies.

  • Audi A8 - Luxury motoring 19 Jul 2017 (Forum)
Not keen on Mercs - too much bling and having had an SLK and a B Class the suspension is way too hard for my liking. Not sure about BMW - I test drove a 4 series the other day - quite a nice car but wasn't anything special. Any other suggestions?
  • Various - Used car advice 2 16 Mar 2017 (Forum)
I asked for some advice on used cars a few days ago and got some good comments hoping to get the same again. I was asking for any comments about about 3 cars including this one... 1999 BMW 323i 2.5L Convertible 120,000 miles £1490 The advice I got was basically don't buy it ! Unless you want to be spending a ton on repairs and maintenance. Having got this advice I started thinking about what it is I want from my car and have come to the following conclusion.

  • invisible indicators, grrr 23 Jul 2015 (Forum)
I've noticed that a number of new cars have indicators that are all but invisible in daylight, all in the name of "styling", thanks to the almost universal fitment of clear lenses front and rear, requiring amber bulbs or amber interior lenses (BMW held out longest against this trend IIRC) makes a lot of signals hard to see and create an added hazard on the roads. Even 44 ton lorries are falling victim to this fad. Amber bulbs seem to fade to clear very quickly and some motorists (deliberately or unwittingly) replace expired amber bulbs with clear ones.
  • Ford Focus - Advice on Focus MK2 1.8 Sport 7 Jan 2015 (Forum)
Hi all, Well after long last we have finally sold the wife's BMW E46 and now she is in the market for a new (second hand) car. With a budget of £2250 MAX we think we have found the ideal car. She would like to have a MK2 Focus. As she does very few miles per year, and 80% of them being town miles, a Diesel was the worst thing she could get and I have convinced her the Petrol is the way forward.
  • New Car Help Please. 22 Aug 2014 (Forum)
I have been looking at varoius reviews of cars for weeks now, from 4X4's, Crossovers, sensible family cars but nothing interests me so I think i have narrowed it down to the following, I am looking at stuff about 4 years old and 4-5 door. Golf MK6 GTI BMW 325i Audi A4 2.0T Seat Leon 2.0 TSI FR I have had a test drive in a 2012 Fosuc ST but I have to say I was not overly impressed it did not seem any faster than the 182 even though I am sure it, also did not like the centre console really like the shape mind, but they do cost a bit more than I really wanted to spend.

  • No Finance, No Part Ex, No Deals? 29 Mar 2013 (Forum)
I know that cash buyers are no longer the preferred customers but how much of a garages profit comes purely from the car sale? Just looked at a BMW 5 series at a national chain garage. After a lengthy test drive and chit chat we started talking about price. I offered £11000 , it's marked at £12000. After half an hour of back and forth including the sales manager coming over for a chat I couldn't get more than a token discount (less than £100).
  • Car Parks... 24 Jul 2012 (Forum)
This tends to be wealthier folks in general we have noticed, or seemingly wealthy since it's allways the Mercedes benz or BMW driver we end up telling off.   We know that we can't clamp people as the law is about to change.  What can we do?  We simply want an effective way that will stop drivers parking where they are not supposed to which will in turn stop myself and the other staff being harrased by other irate visitors   any suggestions most welcome!
  • Golf 1.6 TDI Match Mk6 - Failure of Golf MK6 Clutch & Flywheel 24 Apr 2012 (Forum)
This problem was a shock given that we don't live in a hilly area, my wife has been driving for 27 years and not burnt through any clutches.Indeed her last car a BMW 3 series lasted until 120k miles before it needed any clutch maintanance In looking at the clutch it is a sealed unit, so they don't really look at what might have gone wrong inside it, yet they have taken the easy excuse of driver error without looking any further!

  • If Someone Gave you 50k... 1 Feb 2012 (Forum)
again MPG So then i stated looking at sporty yet realistic cars such as the new focus ST due mid 2012, Audi S range and BMW M series. Now originaly i thought this would be an easy task, choose your dream car but then it got me thinking you would never get this sort of money again. so whatever it is you pick you would pretty much have to stick with it.
