  • Reviving a Fiat Punto.... 24 Feb 2004 (Forum)
I've been asked if I could have a look - my wife has a similar Punto, though my wife's is a slightly older 5 dr SX. I want to help but I'm not sure where I should start; The battery is going to be flat - should I recharge it or would it be less hassle to get a new one (£25-30)? What other things should I look at? - oil/filter/coolant change, brakes, tyres, spark plugs perhaps?
  • Persecuted Kids 15 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Plod has been warning kids recently not to use their silent, battery powered scooters in public, either on the road or pavement. This is due to their "motorised" status, which would therefore require a licence, etc. etc. Has the country gone mad? Why is it legal for kids to ride their pedal-powered bikes at up to 30mph, with no licence, insurance or anything, but illegal to ride a 10mph top speed puny electric scooter?
  • Sierra starter motor 12 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Have also tried another good starter motor and still get nothing beyond the starter itself spinning. The solenoid can be heard clicking as it should, have connected another battery to eliminate a power problem and am running out of ideas. The ring gear on the flywheel looks alright, tried turning the engine over by hand to get onto a different bit of the flywheel, and am still left with the impression that the motor is not engaging with the ring gear.
  • Mondeo TD starting 27 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Hello all does anybody know if the Lucas cav injection pump has a cold start device and if so where is it the haynes manual is pitifully useless unless you have a bosch device I have the usual trouble here, first start after an overnight ends in the engine stopping after about 5 seconds you can do this about 5 or 6 times until it will run cleanly unless you give it a bit of gas and keep it there until its running in which case it fine . I have replaced the glow plugs and the filter housing incase we had an air leak and the battery is new i am now convinced it is a failed cold start on the pump incedently the dam thing starts first time every time after this palarva and pulls like a good un
  • Cavalier Headlamp Switch 24 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Does anyone have experience of changing a Mk3 Cavalier headlamp switch? The Haynes Manual procedure is disconnect battery. Turn switch to dipped beam and pull out switch as you would to turn on interior light. Insert suitable rod into hole on underside of switch cap and release cap. Then squeeze release clips together at base of now exposed spindle and pull switch from dash.
  • Carburettor cleaning goes wrong 19 May 2003 (Forum)
Ok no problem, just try to get it restarted. Problem is it doesn't want to know as it coughs and splutters. So my battery is dead now. I then get my brother to help me bump start it and as we are doing it there is an almighty ping, that because it is so loud sounds more like an almighty bang. Trying to start the car now, it doesn't cough but just keeps trying to turn over with, it seems, no intention of starting.

If anyone has any suggestions or has solved the same problem any info would be greatly appreciated. I have given it to a car electrical bloke to have a look at, he cleaned battery contacts and checked some connections and randomly cured the problem but didn't know how. Cheers, Adam
  • Ford Focus -Engine Warning Light- 17 Mar 2003 (Forum)
After having the car for around 500 miles, the engine warning light camne on one morning, the car drove fine still and everything was working perfectly. I decided to disconnect the battery, just to see if the light would come back on again when i re-connected. Fortunatly it didn't, however, when i turned my stereo on, the light came back on. If tried it a few timnes now, and it keeps happening, but if i don't turn the stereo on the light won't come on.
  • Astra Coded Radio - code deactivation 22 Jan 2003 (Forum)
One thing it did come with was a radio handbook - but unfortunately for a completely different model! Currently the radio is working fine, but I can foresee a time in the future when the battery will become disconnected for whatever reason, and on reconnection I expect I will be challenged for a code to reactivate the radio. Since I don't have it and neither did the previous owners, I believe there is a way to take the code protection off with a combination of key presses/turning off/on etc. so long as the radio is activated at the moment.
  • Ancient Polo wiring fault 4 Jan 2003 (Forum)
If you switch the wipers on when the heater fan is running full blast, the fan almost stops, then picks up again. Alternator seems to be charging, and battery is OK as well - will start the car even after it has been standing outside for a week or more. I reckon either the wiper and heater motor have a common feed which is faulty, or a common earth. Right now I can't find my Haynes manual, and it's too cold to go poking round in the hope of finding something - so can anyone suggest a likely specific cause (and location) of the fault?
  • BMW Boxer 23 Jul 2002 (Forum)
What I intend doing is draining the old petrol from the tank and carbs and filling up with new, and jump starting it from my car to the old knackered battery. Advice on two points would be appreciated: I) If it doesn't start as above any ideas what do after checking that the spark is OK 2) Will there be any lasting problems with the bike because of it's lack of use?
  • Lack of use problems. 5 Mar 2002 (Forum)
He bought it 10 years ago with 3k on the clock, it now has 11.500. Over the last 6 months or so he has been having problems starting it. He bought a new battery and had the car serviced a few weeks ago, but today it wouldn't start. After a lot of turning over it finally fired up, so i took it out for an 'Italian Tune Up'. It coughed a bit at first, but that cleared up after a couple of miles and went smoothely enough after that.
  • Air bag light slow to extinguish 21 Dec 2001 (Forum)
At first I thought it might be damp in sensor (car had been standing around for 6 weeks being fixed) but it hasn't improved. Disconnected/reconnected battery to no avail. Should I be concerned ? Surely the fact that it eventually goes out means it's still working OK.
  • Citroen Xsara Picasso (2000 - 2010) - 04 1.6 Hdi Non-starter P0087, P1113, P1351 19 Nov 2012 (Forum)
The starter still turns the engine over quickly but it doesn?t fire. The MIL is still on. The display still says ?Economy mode active?. The red battery light still stays on even after removing the ignition key. I disconnect the battery and charge it between attempts. I don?t know what to try next, someone please point me in the right direction.
  • Ford focus econotec diesel 2008 - Car chooses when to start - Help!! 21 Aug 2021 (Forum)
She took it to her friend's husband, a mechanic, he put his diagnostic equipment on it and said there's fault with the battery and that is why it sometimes won't start. We told our mechanic and he said he checked the battery and it was fine. He now thinks the car issue could be with the instrument clusters - ECU's/PCM's (engine control module/power control module.
  • 2014 Vauxhall Astra GTC J 2.0L Diesel - MPG suddenly dropped by 30-40% 3 Oct 2019 (Forum)
I was beginning to think of pulling over after 10 mins of this as something just was clearly not right ... and then out of nowhere, my MPG shot up to 65-70 and 2 bars on the turbo dropped off.  Is this something to do with charging the alternator as the battery got so low when I was parked up or is this some sort of DPF cleaning?? Thing is it started when engine wasnt even up to temp. Gave me a bit of a scare as I have only owned the car 2 weeks and I have been used to the excellent MPG it usually provides!
  • Chrysler PT Cruiser 2004 - key will not turn all way in ignition to start eng 18 Jun 2018 (Forum)
I did go back to the car with the spare, which opened the doors but dead as a doornail for starting the engine!!  Also tried new battery in the key fob - didnt make any difference.  Thought maybe flat battery to the engine. Did get home.  Very kind man who knew a bit about cars, took pity to help me out.  He did something with a screwdriver under the bonnet at the front (towards the bottom) and started the engine.
  • BMW 3 Series Coupe - 2007 320d E92 - engine shaking/ loss of power 6 Mar 2017 (Forum)
I've got a e92 320d M Sport Auto with only 89k on the clock. I've only had the car for a couple of months now and a few weeks ago the battery decided to die only a few hours of being parked up, so it was jump started with another car and since then the car sounded like a tractor. I took it to a BMW specialist who adviced me not to drive it and bring it to him the next day to have it checked out.
  • '54 Fiat Punto Dynamic 1.2 S-A (Dualogic) - Good money after bad? 29 Nov 2015 (Forum)
Engine failure warnings, airbag check warnings, max temp warnings, power steering failures... I changed the battery as it was struggling to start with all this going on. This made no difference and even with a brand new battery it sometimes doesnt start. If the car stalls due to the gearbox now, she has to wait ten minutes for it to suddenyl decide it will turn over.
