• 12v supply to trailer via caravan socket 30 Nov 2006 (Forum)
  Never having had a caravan or even bothered with the 2nd socket on any car could someone please tell me what I would need to do to be able to charge this from the Land Rover. There is a caravan socket on the tow hitch for this vehicle. I believe all the wiring is there as previous owners used to tow a caravan with it. Would there normally be a charging relay in the car to prevent the car battery going flat should the trailer battery develop a fault?

  I have a new shape C5 Exclusive estate, fitted with citroen tow bar and electrics. I recently discoverd when towing for the first time that it does not have any warning system fitted as to whether or not the caravan indicators lamps are flashing( as required by law).

  Has anyone experience of having the Ford MONDEO TDCi 13 Pin Electrical Kit for Trailer Coupling (ie tow bar electrics to enable a caravan to be towed)installed, in particular the wiring up of the 12v fridge circuit and the battery charging circuit. The accompanying Instruction Book only devotes one page to this subject and does not provide relays, wiring etc to enable these circuits to be connected.

  I have had my new Ford Mondeo TDCI estate since July 2002 (4K miles). Already it has been towed into a Ford dealer by the RAC twice. Both occasions, on starting, the glow-plug light would flash, the engine would turn over but it would not start. On the first occasion it was in the dealers for 7 days.

  Can anybody advise on whether it is worth chipping this car . I tow a caravan and wonder if i would benefit by much.It would be interesting to hear peoples view on this subject.

  The RAC and the garage I was towed to both said that the oil filters had not been put on correctly and had come off. Had car towed to Nissan in early Jan. Their email to me today says  "Sump has been removed and crank and bearings inspected, both damaged so requires new engine.

  Assuming that I can get it next week I'll be able to put _some_ running-in miles on it (perhaps a thousand) prior to starting to tow with it. The 'van will be around 1100kgs laden (C5 limit @1400) and the car will be 3-up but not heavily laden, nowhere near max train weight that's for sure. Is this a complete "no-no" ? There are a couple of used examples in the region with 3k miles on which could be a better bet (but not necessarily any cheaper!).

  Going to look at a petrol Subaru Forester to use as a working vehicle in, well, a forest! 2008 2 ltr with a tow bar already fitted and I will see exactly how it looks like tomorrow morning but looks very clean on the pictures. Long MOT and apparently a service history. We can buy it outright and take our time selling either the big van or the family car.

  It was towed to a garage (Bosch Service agent) who said that fault was registered was high turbo boost pressure, but say they have reset the fault code and cannot reproduce the problem, so no faulty parts found or replaced.

  My Civic 3 door, 1998, 1.4, has developed a rear nearside suspension squeak only when the car has a full load of people and/or stuff. ie: the suspension is out of the normal range of travel. I can just about get it to squeak by jumping up and down on the tow bar. The car has only ever been used to tow a light trailer and motorcycle, it has done 40k miles and drives fine. Closer inspection shows that it must have been designed by a madman with an obsession for bushes.

  I'm not put off by the foot activated parking brake either as I've had Citroen XMs in the past. HJ's car-by-car breakdown is helpful but the Caravan Club Tow Car of the Year mentions the Santa Fe parking brake not holding on a 17% hill and some "instability" towing. Then there's the question of old Sorento versus new Sorento. Arrgh! Anyone got any contributions to the debate please?
