• Caravan towing with Fiat Multipla 29 Jul 2001 (Forum)
  Anyone any experience of towing a substantial (1150Kg) caravan with a Fiat Multipla JTD 105? I tow with a Volvo but aim to sell as its a thirsty T5. I hope to be able to tow with our recently acquired Multipla - which incidentally is really fun to drive and as practical and commanding as a 4x4 (and really interesting to be seen in!)

  The towed weight is well below the cars maximum (700Kg), and I would only be towing 3-4 times a year, usually between 5 and 30 miles, with perhaps one journey of 150 miles.

    It is legal to tie bikes onto any car with a few straps of canvas.   In the USA the MX5 MK3 can be fitted with a tow bar for towing.   Towing with the MX5 is not approved in UK, not  I think Europe. In the USA they do sell tow bar kits - the chassis had mounting points, for the MX5 MK3.

  The vehicle has covered 85000 miles and has been regularly serviced including changing the auto box oil. I have previously towed my caravan (approx 21cwt laden) with a BMW 2.8i auto with no problems. I changed that car for a 2.9 Scorpio auto and blew two boxes, one whilst towing and the other shortly after a tow trip. I am therfore a little apprehensive of towing the van with the auto Saab and am considering changing to a manual diesel ( see previous query re Tuningbox).

  "It safe to tow an automatic as long as the gear selector is in Neutral" Can anyone please advise if this is so? I have already used the site search function, where all posts seem to relate to automatics being used for towing trailers/caravans, not to the car itself being towed.

  Ladies and Gentlemen, I need to tow a car next weekend with a rope (MG conked out at the weekend), and I’m unsure as to the requirements of insurance. When being towed, is the MG covered under the insurance of the towing car, as it is ‘attached’?

  I am having difficulty finding out what weight I may legally tow with my 4WD. I need to tow a trailer carrying my cherished 'ancient' and do not want to fall foul of the safety regs. The local library has been unable to help and the local police seem unsure! Saturday's column gave the relevant information for a non 4WD tow vehicle, where can the relevant regulations be found?

  Fitting a tow bar to my 56 reg astra hatchback. The tow bar is a simple enough job to fit very similar to my 2000 astra, but the electrics are a bit different. There is a panel in the boot on the n/s/ when opened there is a small fuse box and plugs with one empty space, is this for the tow bar wiring?

  I have a c.10 year old Pendle bike carrier unit, 2 L shaped poles fit into a block that itself is bolted onto the tow bar. I now want to fit this unit onto a new tow bar to be fitted to a 2003 reg car. The tow bar man says he is not allowed to fit such an old block because of "type approval"(?) but ... Pendle tell me that it's legal to have such a block fitted provided it's only used for carrying bikes whereas it would be illegal if used for towing.

  Is there any law forbidding the use of tow ropes nowadays ?  I still carry the ropes that I used in yesteryear before cars became so reliable.  The last time that I used one was to tow a people carrier from a muddy patch in a National Trust car park.

  I have bought myself a Hyundai trajet 2.0 CRDI with a snapped cambelt with the intention of doing it up. I want to tow it with my Grand vitara diesel, and I will get a Towing Bar to do it. All I was wondering was does anyone know if the Trajet has a towing eye location at the front somewhere that I can link a bar to?

  Does anyone know the wiring sequence for a tow bar on a 99 406 HDi? I've just bought a tow bar from a work mate,but unfortunately,he took it off,but never thought to keep a list of which wires went where.(DOH!!!)
